My wife and I went for a ride this past weekend over to Camano Island up in Snohomish County to look for a house to purchase. The island has some nice views and quit a bit of trees still. As we were driving around I seen this dead Porcupine :yeah: on the side of the road. :yike:
You don't see to many porcupines in western Washington at least not in King or Snohomish County. So my question is: Where did this guy come from :dunno: how long have they been on the island :dunno: and whats the population of porkies on the island. Well I guess that's more than one question.
Does anybody have an answer ?

I have seen by the dozens in Newaukum and around Monte & Cosmo and in Capitol Forest

Not sure how many there are on the island but i have seen many dead on 532 over the years. I have seen a lot of tree damage as well. I know a couple trappers that get a lot of porky's on tree farms every year (off the island). There damage is often mistaken for bear damage. One other thing when driving on the island watch the speed changes you have 45 to 50 then 35 mph or you will get to meet the Sheriff.

Interesting knowing that you have seen them for years dead on 532. I would of never thought they would be on an island. One would think since it is an island and they are there that they never got off the island and they have been there since :dunno: time ? :dunno:
There must be some kind of a large population or at least a medium (a couple hundred) size population to keep the species alive there if you have been seeing them for years. Thanks for the information.
As for the Sheriff, I haven't meet him yet ....... :chuckle: ...... and I hope if I do its at a coffee shop and not out on the road. Thanks for that heads up too.

I have been told there was a big hunting club out here and they imported several big and small game animals (i'm sure that doesn't include Porky). Gramp always told me the island had small deer. l don't like to disagree with Gramp but I have seen some good size deer both body and horns wise. There are several flocks of Turkeys. WDFW says there isn't any cougars but i know for a fact that's not true. My friend took a picture of a baby in his tree. I have heard people say they have seen bear but i have not seen one or any tracks or scat. One thing that is interesting is viny maples are not native to the island and the only place i have seen them is in landscape. Good luck on a house they seem to sell fast.

For you i'll go ask him if he still has it. It's been about 10 years. If he doesn't i'll take a pic of the one on my wall and send in its place. They got one back in 1994 collard it and released in North Cascade to chase Bench Legs.
