Title: Diesel Issues
Post by: jstone on September 03, 2016, 04:15:21 PM
What could be wrong? I just got home from eastern Washington almost home going up hills my turbo was winding up but losing power?? I need ideas before I take it to the shop. Before I get hosed from the dealer. Its time for a new truck. 2003 f-350 6.0. Frustrated...

Going to need more info....
Blowing smoke? Using or making oil? Can you hear anything abnormal, running rough etc.

losing pressure on the compressor side? Mass airflow issues?

Not blowing smoke, just turbo winding up and louder than normal and no power. I will check on the oil

sounds like a boost leak. check intercooler and all boots as well as air intake boots and lines coming out of the turbo. sounds like the turbo is hurting for air which would cause the loss of power as well as the noise.

Thank You I will look closer. just had the oil changed about 3500 miles ago

It could make level in the intercooler look higher if it is air leak.

Clogged air filter can cause the turbo to whine. I'd rule out the simple stuff first.

Charge air cooler tube loose or split maybe?

I will check the air filter but it is new as of spring time

I'd make sure all the hoses that connect the intercooler piping are connected properly and are in good condition.  They can get old and split or just pop off and when or if that happens you'll definitely notice less power and more noise.

Personally I only go to the dealer if it's covered under warranty. Sorry I can't recommend a muffler shop in Tacoma.

No dealership for exhaust work. I've had good experiences with Dan Fast. Is there one Down there by you?

So did you fix the power loss issue? And for the price of a dealer or shop doing an exhaust you could buy a brand new kit exhaust from mbrp or diamond eye for way less (starts around 251 shipped for a turbo back

Exhaust leak after the turbo will not cause you to lose power in a diesel. I would check your intercooler hoses there very  prone to come loose or split.... If anything you would probably gain power with your exhaust broke off, not loose power.

are there any sensors on the exhaust downstream of the break?

Pretty easy to do it yourself, I agree.  I replaced mine last year with a Diamond Eye setup.

I also agree with other posts, this sounds more like an intercooler hose issue than anything.  You are probably losing power because your turbo can't build up the pressure.

Not on that year of ford, the didn't go to the dpf exhaust system tell 08 with the 6.4l.

I agree that the CaC tube issue is still the most likely cause but the exhaust needs to be fixed either way.

6.0, cant help but think heads!  Plugged egr head gasket?

interesting you get full spool, loss of power and no smoke.  Something is pulling back the fuel under boost.   If it was a boost leak you'd see lot's of smoke as you're still full fuel but lacking air = black smoke

not familiar with 6.0's but I'd look for something that would restrict fuel - like mudman's theory of the EGR

Check coolant.  Replace egr or clean it carefully.  Easy enough to do.  Then drive it and see?  Boost problem possible.Lot of times you can hear swoosh of boost leaks when under high boost.  Egr common issue and you should clean/replace it regardless.  Learn about these 6.0 so you can prevent spending 5000$ in the future, which will happen.
