So last weekend I moved a trail cam down to one of my favorite elk hunting spots. The trails are torn up and there is plenty of sign. While trying to get where I wanted to set up the Cam I walked right into a rattlesnake den. The den sits right next to the water where the elk come into it. My question is do I hunt over the snake den or try something else?

I hate snakes, so I would be miles away...
-
I would be killing those snakes!
-
I would hunt over it right after I called in a air strike. :bash: :yike:
-
They don't seem to be aggressive. I don't like snakes at all but I will hunt it. My biggest worry is shooting an elk with a snake bite.
-
Poor little snake won't hurt you. :cryriver: :cryriver: :cryriver:

You will know if one has been bit. I seen a Bull beef cow that got struck in the neck, his neck was 3 times normal for over a week! It was crazy looking but he lived just fine.

That would be where I sent that one annoying person who wants to hunt with you but doesn't want to do any work.
-
No No No!!!!! The only good snake is a dead snake. I hate Snakes :yike:

Hunt over it and bring back some snake skins too. :chuckle:

Call in a napalm strike lol.
If you do decide to hunt it get some pictures! Is it in sage country?
-
No these are timber rattlers. They did not make a peep I walked in between like 5 of them. Must have been too cold. I retraced my steps out.

Screw it...I am going to hunt sunday and if I locate the elk near snake den sunday night I will go in early Monday morning. I am going to buy some snake gators and I will show them. Pick up some bird shot for the .40 and kill some snakes.
-
Bring the 12 gauge and go nuts!!!

won't that ruin the elk hunt?

No timber rattlers in WA, they are all the same species.
I'd hunt over it and not worry about the den. It doubt the elk really worry about it.

So will your .40, just hunt it and let them be. Pretty cool sight I'd bet, just watch for them while accessing through there. Good luck!

Im sure they have heard it before :) Is this in the blues by chance? Never had the luxury of encountering them when I was there, but it looked like a good area for snakes
-
No thank you I hate snakes period useless nasty slithery buggers! Shoot on sight!

I don't think you would want to get close enough to a rattler to try and kill it with bird shot through a .40.
-
:yike: yeah hate snakes, but if they leave me alone I leave them. Hunt it, but be careful.
-
I'm a bit surprised that nobody has said the obvious.
Snake Lives....

I wouldn't hunt elk in the blues cause there are none there. It is on Notellum ridge.

don't matter?

Rattlers are cool! Taste good too. Leave em be and they will leave you be. Read somewhere they can only strike half their body length. Stay outside of that. Know where a big den is at in Winthrop. Try to take my family up there ever couple of years. Pick out a couple of big ones for dinner.

Jungle rules: don't put your hands or feet where your eyes have not been first.

That sounds awesome!! I've never stumbled onto a den!

22 revolver with long rifle bird shot.
By the time you hunt, they will most likely be hibernating unless you are hunting archery.
-
My buddy shot a nice muley a couple years back with an obvious snake bite to his muzzle. It was a deformed mess! Old guy in town, said, yep snake bite!.. You go live in the Desert and not get bit!.. Ok solid info! We ate it, no issue!
-
I would be eating really good for a few days and have some new boots by the end of the day
-
Any snake den on my property gets :mgun2:
-
Air strike is in order

I love snakes. I'm not especially afraid of them either. We killed 8 snakes with shovels in the same 15 Sq ft back in montana a couple years ago. At least 2 got away. They were all right on the road and right by the house. Scary thought with all my young cousins around.
