So I was up driving around on the logging roads and I thought I heard a old 4 cylinder with no muffler revving his engine but as I drove down the road farther it got louder. I finally stopped because it sounded like it was right up the hill from me. Then I heard bushes being smashed down and something running down towards the road, and sure enough it was a bear. But there was something wrong with this bear. It had a really bad broken leg and wass bleeding. I wanted to call the fish and wildlife but had no cell service. I would've shot it to put it out of its misery but didn't because it did not know if it's legal.
So now i'm asking for future reference is it legal to shoot it then report it to fish and game?

unfortunately not legal without a tag. wild thing to have witnessed though. Nature can be brutal.

What did the old 4 cylinder engine revving have to do with the bear?

Pretty sure he initially mistaken the bear for a o'l 4 banger....

not without a tag? But I used to hear that people used to shoot their bear then go get the tag. I think you can still get your tag throughout the season though.

Just because people may have done that and you still can does not make it legal, and that was the question from the OP

Nature doesn't kill humanely. Without the tag, no go. I wouldn't be hunting around there for a while.

What leg was broken?
My brother harvested a bear a few years ago that had a front leg missing from the elbow down (all scared up and healed). They are tough and i wouldn't be surprised if he pulled through on a front leg... Back leg would be more difficult.

A good decision will make you sleep good at night. But only a fool tells on himself. :twocents:

I answered his question then added some of what I know or heard. And wasn't saying you can still shoot then go get the tag. Was saying bear tags are on sale throughout the season I think. Meaning he could if he didn't have his tag yet still get one.(tag that is) Don't know but maybe back in the day 50's-60's or so it was legal. No need for the attitude just know what I heard is all.
But no not without a tag he can't at least not now days at least.

For WA you can buy your tag throughout the season. In Idaho the second it is opening day you can no longer buy the tag.

Yes you can. You can still go buy tags. I bought my bear tag well after opening day this spring...

I think you are thinking of Oregon, you can buy tags all season long in Idaho.

He asked if it was legal I was just pointing out that shooting and then buying a tag would not be legal as your suggestion could be misinterpreted

I am thinking if it was still bleeding, maybe someone, possibly a bow hunter just shot it. And will be on its trail soon. He may or may not have liked it if you shot it for him???
