Title: Long range rifles?
Post by: Bearhide on September 15, 2016, 10:45:56 AM: Getting into long range hunting. Want to shoot to 1000 yds. And want to get a 7mm mag. Or a .300 mag. Topping out at $2000. Any suggestions? What's your favorite?

Both are great shooters and well within your rifle budget even with some upgrades. I wouldn't hesitate to buy either again. :twocents:
That or collect parts for a build. Really lots of directions you could go

Post by: trophyhunt on September 15, 2016, 11:06:44 AM: I've had the huskemaw scope on my .300 win mag for years now, no complaints. My farthest kill shot is around 620. I just sent my gun to them to have them check it out and after a slight adjustment they had it shooting 1,000 yards on target. If I did it over again, I'd consider the 7mm ultra mag just because that's what their system is set up for.

For optics I would recommend a scope with MOA based turrets rather than caliber specific, yardage specific turrets. You didn't mention your optics budget but the Nightforce SHV line is an excellent option for a mid priced optic with long range capability. Depending upon what caliber and scope you select you may also need a 20 MOA base if you want to shoot beyond 1000 yards.

Post by: Zuus on September 15, 2016, 02:32:33 PM: I bought a .300 RUM that came recommended by a hunting buddy from Idaho. He personally has taken elk at 900+ with that rifle and a NF scope.
I haven't shot that far, and probably never will (I wiggle too much!).

Post by: jackelope on September 15, 2016, 02:35:37 PM: I bought the Remington 700 Long Range in .25-06. It's a pretty good shooter so far but I've only shot it about 20 rounds. Shoots about .7" groups at 100 yards. I've not had chance to air it out at all yet. I put a Leupold Vari-x 2 6-18x40 on it with MOA turrets. Looking forward to extending the range on it a little here. After hunting season it's going to rbros for a little experiment.

Perhaps more than what you need for 1000 yard shooting but what the heck - go big or go home right? :chuckle:

Post by: rbros on September 15, 2016, 06:39:55 PM: Find an older sendero or just buy a rem LR rifle. Use the rest of the money for ammo and small tweaks on the rifle. Shoot it for awhile then you can use it to build a semi custom.

Speaking from a budget standpoint, you can buy a 700LR for $600 and put $300-500 into upgrades and still be a lot cheaper than a true custom. Or semi-custom.
I put a trigger in mine and have shot about 20 rounds of factory ammo and it's in the .7" range. Going to get a little work done to it pretty soon with a reputable builder and hope to have it shooting .5" and it will still only have about $900 invested into it all up.

This is excellent advice. The best way to get started is to buy quality used equipment from somebody looking to upgrade. Building on a tweaked and tuned Rem 700 puts you at nearly the same price as a used gun with a custom action. Being patient and shopping around can save you a lot of money.

A lot of good advice above, I'll add from my own expirence you may want to take 2nd look at the 338 flavors, after almost 1000 rounds threw my 300WM I really wish I had a little longer super sonic range. Confirmed out to 1630 yards now. And Two kills over 600 yards.

Post by: Antlershed on September 21, 2016, 10:38:38 PM: For 1,000 yards and your budget, Sendero SFII, lighter trigger spring, muzzlebreak, and a Leupold VX-3 with MOA turrets. My cousin and I had twin setups that we would shoot accurately out to 1,600 yards with our hand loads.

Wouldn't hesitate to go with an Rbros rifle if you could find one in your budget though.

I'm running the .280ai. assuming your talking 2k for the rifle only . my son just did a tika .300wsm with a bellcarolson stock and a bench mark brake . he used a vx3 and warne bases sweet set up for 2k total .
