i am curious to know how many people on here have actually seen a live wolf in washington.
not tracks or maybe heard a howl or my buddy's neighbor's uncle's brother's dad saw one, or anything.
just plain i saw a living breathing wolf in the flesh in washington state.
and if you did, did you report it to the wdfw? if not, why not? there was some wolves allegedly seen up the road from my family's place in the blues and it was reported to the wdfw. they were out there right away looking to confirm the sighting. a biologist and others came out the next day. they don't mess around if there is a reported sighting.
there was a comment made on a different thread about 10 wolf tags in this state. i would venture a guess that hardly any of them would get filled.
there's a few folks on here that spend a serious amount of time in the woods where the wolves are...so if anyone is going to see them, i would think there'd be a couple on here to see them.
just a curious thought i had reading all these threads about SSS and blah blah blah
please try to keep this on topic or i will nuke it.
-
where at in the blues?
-
Stickslinger and I have definitely heard them. One time he my dad and I swear we saw one a few hundred yards out. Unless it was a super coyote, but we all agreed on wolf.
MS
-
Saw a few close to Lake Wenatchee around 1990.
-
I have not seen one in Washington, but I have seen them in B.C.
-
My old man had one trot by the treestand over whitetail hunting this year... Jet black and lookin for his next meal!!
-
Great idea Jackelope. I have wondered the same thing. I spend a LOT of time in the Blues and have NEVER seen one. I am not calling anyone that claims they have a liar or anything...I just have personally never encountered one.
I have always wondered though, with all the folks that say they have heard one, found tracks, kills, etc why haven't we seen any pics of one alive? Whether they be personal cameras or trailcams. After all, there are a LOT of trail cams out there...I would think that sooner or later SOMEONE would capture one on film. Heck, I'd take a pic of one that has been tendered roadkill for that matter. (Again, not accusing folks of embellishing or flat out lying...I was just wondering aloud)
(I do know for a fact that there was one captured on a trailcam N of Spokane a couple years ago. There was an article in the Spokesman Review on it and it included the pic)

where at in the blues?
alpowa ridge...thats all your getting. ;)
i am not insinuating in any way there are no wolves here. in fact if you can talk to the right people at wdfw they will tell you where they are for sure. until they establish territories and start breeding, they do not consider them resident wolf populations, and once they do establish territories they are easy to keep track of.
i swear we heard them howling 2 springs ago when we were turkey hunting north of spokane...but we didn't see them or see any tracks.
-
i have personally seen one in the blues last year. also im not giving out an area its already been reported to the game biologists here...
-
Dont know if this counts or not but 4 years or so ago turkey hunting out of Davenport i was walking through some timber and on the other side of a draw there was the biggest damn coyote i have ever saw. I unloaded my turkey load at it and came up empty handed. Never once did wolf come to mind until this year when i saw two wolves hit around the davenport area and sent to a lab in California. So maybe it was a damn wolf. If not it was a state record coyote.
-
Saw a bunch at Wolfhaven down south with the inlaws, they just couldn't understand why I wasn't all warm and fuzzy.
-
A friend of mine saw one in the blues a couple years back, no doubt in his mind. I am glad I haven't seen one yet.
-
I highly doubt washington will be getting 10 wolf tags we'll be lucky enough to get to hunt them here in idaho within the next 4 years and maybe 8 if obama stays in office
-
Ya got me curious so I did a google search. Not sure how many folks have seen this article before but I thought I would post it here since it pertains directly to the subject. This was in July of last year (08)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ten years after launching their first wilderness survey with a remote camera, Conservation Northwest captured images of six wolf pups and a collared adult on Monday.
Two collared adults from the central Washington wolf pack–the "Lookout Pack"–were confirmed as 100% wolf by DNA testing by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The Lookout Pack of the Methow Valley is the first wolf pack in Washington since the 1930s. Genetically they are related to wolves from BC or Alberta, and made their way to Washington from there.
In a study from Oregon State University on the Olympic National Park, wolves were found to help riparian ecosystems by controlling populations of elk that eat young trees that stabilize stream banks.
Oregon also recently reported its first wolf pack since the predator was wiped out by bounty hunting a century ago.
The discovery of a wolf pack in north-central Washington comes soon after the decision by a federal judge to restore protection for wolves in the Northern Rockies, including the eastern third of Washington State, until a judge makes a final ruling in the case. To plan for the return of wolves to Washington, the Department of Fish and Wildlife has assembled a group of stakeholders including Conservation Northwest to create a state conservation and management plan for wolves.
-
I saw in the flesh, living and breathing 22 wolves in Pullman, Wa in 1996. They were all in our large predator enclosure waiting to be let loose in Idaho and Montana.....man if I only knew then what I know now.....
-
I've never seen a wolf or even heard one or saw a track. My dad saw one in the Pasayten in the late 90's up past Iron Gate. No dout in his mind what it was. He said it was on a deer trail on the opposite ridge from him and he watched it for a good 20 seconds. My dad knows wildlife and predators, grew up trapping in MT and WA. He didn't report it, don't know why.
-
No for Washington, but 2 years ago in 10A in Idaho, 2 walked by us at 40 yards on the game trail below. They went out of sight a couple minutes later one reappeared out front on point on me standing there for at least a minute while the other flanked us from the side, then they realized we werent elk, and disappeared. Talk about eerie, with only a bow in hand it felt like *censored* was about to go western!!!!

I seen one up Saint Helens and tracks too.
-
My wife and I saw the wolf that was hit and confirmed by Davenport, about a month before it died. Reported it, there wasn't much interest until it was found dead and confirmed wolf; then WDFW was eager for a full report.
-
I have seen two. :o :o

:o...thatd be really cool to see but i agree with your statement.
-
I have seen one myself in northeastern wa.I also know for a fact the game department has pics in the same area.Talked to a game biologist three years ago during lateseason. He said they figured there was 10 to 15 inb the area
-
I saw those same wolves in the cage by the bears in Pullman, used to go out there all the time and watch them eat road kill all the time I could have sworn I remember them saying those wolves would never be released into the wild because of their contact with humans. To answer the question I have never seen a wolf in the wild, a friend saw 3 this past weekend, probably pretty close to where Firecrotch saw his. They were chasing elk in the snow. If this is true and I believe it is, it won't be long til I see them on our property in the Blues. :'(

The DNA report came back as hybrid dogs on those animals.
I live and work in Pend Oreille County (ground zero for washington wolves) and have never seen one.
-
I spend alot of time in Stevens and Pend Oreille on the back of my mule and hunting and have never heard one, seen a track or seen a wolf.
One thing, guys say I saw the biggest coyote ever, might have been a wolf. The difference is so huge you won't mistake a wolf for a coyote, it would be like thinking a lab is a Great Dane or visa versa.
-
my old man and uncle swear they saw one in the late 90s up on lemansky mt. in the sinlahekin area.was on a rock ledge above them looking at them.they described it as large and almost black.said it gave them the hebegebes.I personally have never seen one in the wild.
-
The DNA report came back as hybrid dogs on those animals.
You are half right. One came back as a hybrid, the other was pure wolf of NW BC lineage.
-
Never seen 1 in WA or AK.
Saw 1 in Alberta.
Heard em in the Joe.
Know someone who hit a wolf hybrid (supposedly verified by F/G) north of Davenport. Probably the same 1 doublelung is talking about.
-
I've seen several From the Methow, Sanpoil, and Selkirks. Ltos of *censored* and lots of tracks, and yes, I know what I am looking at. First one was about in 1980 and there was a male and female with pups. Last one(in Washington) was this last spring, probably a young male on his own trailing me. Icalled another one in in Mt on my elk hunt.
-
Sanpoil :o Don't like that, thats my neck of the woods. 288 and his dad saw one up hear this year also.
-
look on at khq.com and see a pair of wolves and there 6 pups in okanagon county
-

I think you're talking about the wolf hit near tum tum, not the one in Davenport.
-
no not the same one these are pure wolves from canada the q6 news say if u dont belive me just go to khq.com and read it
-

those are wdfw trailcamera pics of those wolves, gene. one of the pictures is either in this thread or the other one going right now.
-
Yeah, I believe Polarbear has ran into them as well Teacherman. They have been there awhile but spreading. Pretty sure the one I saw last spring was from them. My goal is to get some shots of the Alta wolves this spring, as soon as the hand is clear.
-
I've had a close encounter with 2. 20 yrds.. Both were jet black. Methow,wa.
-
I (and two others) saw one near the top of Smackout Pass just west of Ione in 2002. It crossed the road in front of us and was at about 25 yds up the hill when we stopped to look. He didn't stick around long. He was very dark but not black. 100% certain it was a wolf.

That is correct - guess "near Davenport" is relative, to me everything along Highway 2 east of Banks Lake is "near Davenport"!
-
seen on in fruitland in stevens co.
-
2008 middle of deer season, up in Loup Loup pass about 3 miles North of the pass....watched 5 transit the clearing i was watching for Mulies, figured THAT was blown.
Yes reported to WDFW, got a yawn and a "yeah we know about them."
-
I seen a few in Tonasket in 1987 two were on the top of my parents property and 2 or 3 a few miles from the house. seen one in like 88 by republic washington.

-
AENEAS...
cat-how many wolves have you seen?
-
I saw 3 together on opening day of rifle deer season this year in the Sawtooth. We bivied in 8 miles the day before season and could not find a deer. Saw them at about 700 yds on the move. I've got pics of their tracks. Man there tracks are big. We heard them howling at night. I called the game dept later and he was very excited about me seeing them. We saw 6 does the whole trip (3 days). What a disappointment. >:( >:( >:(
-
Another vote for Sanpoil. Also Quartz Mt. on the McMann Creek side.
-
Curious what area of Sanpoil? I frequent the larger river portion up to the campground by boat very often. I'm sure you don't see wolves from a boat often, but haven't explored much more of that river.
-
The Sanpoil just out of Republic.
-
Aeneus :dunno:
Ya that is it I use to call it ANUS Valley :chuckle:
-
AENEAS...
cat-how many wolves have you seen?
It that area back then it was around 5 that was a long time ago to remember :chuckle: But have friends up there that have seen more that live up there. Plus the little time I spent up there seeing that many back then which is 20yrs ago I could not even guess how many can be seen now in that area :yike:
-

-
If I saw a wolf It would be dead and I wouldn't be telling you guys :P
-
Yeah, Just shoot em in the guts so that they run into some thick nasty *censored* and die. Nobody ever finds them, nobody ever finds out.
Watch out for the collared ones, though.
-
:yeah:
-
right... whatever.
not what this thread was for as i stated in post #1.
back to whether or not people have seen any wolves.
-
Seen some monster tracks up in the huckleberry range, not 100% sure.
-
right... whatever.

:jacked:
Funny how they always show their faces...it's like they can't hear the word without getting lathered up.
-
Friends and Family have seen them in the Olympics, I have never seen one but Im sure there up there why not no ones gonna stop them.
-
mulehunter--pm sent.
-
mulehunter, I don't think that's what Jackelope is getting at. He simply wanted to hear from folks who have actually witnessed wolves in the wild here in Washington and where they spotted them.
Trust me my friend, there are PLENTY of threads here on Hunting Washington about wolves, what folks want to do with them, etc.
-
I have seen 2. First one was on flat creek rd, above northport about 15 years ago.
The other was this year in rail canyon, above tum tum.It was 1.4 mi from where the wolf was killed 2 years ago on the highway.
-
Seen 1 a few years ago between Lake Kachees and Cooper Lake.
-
I think you're talking about the wolf hit near tum tum, not the one in Davenport.

The 1 I'm referring to is not the 1 near Tum Tum. This one was between Fort Spokane and Davenport.
-
Seen 1 a few years ago between Lake Kachees and Cooper Lake.
i seen some very big dog tracks by lake kachess. they were bigger then my palms. and there were no human tracks to be seen anywhere. there were up by fortune (sp) creek.
also see a set of tracks (2 dogs) about the same size in the cabin creek area, this was in 07 during the late elk season. they were about the same size as the ones i seen this year. i followed these ones for a while and they crossed the river.
-
This fall i saw a pack of 5 and reported their location to the WDFW. They said that they already knew because they had a collar on one of them. I heard they have been spotting the same pack and it has supposedly gotten bigger.
That pack just hasn't ran into the wrong local yet...
-
Never seen one just heard them.
-
Was up getting a load of firewood yesterday in the blues and saw a really big track. Near my elk camp so I am hoping it was just someone's great dane out for a walk. No human tracks with it though.
-
i have personally seen one in the blues last year. also im not giving out an area its already been reported to the game biologists here...
It wont matter if you tell or not Fire. The wolves are going to eat all your deer and there wont be any left for you :chuckle:
Havent seen any in any of my scoutings
-
I just noticed this thread. I've seen wolves every year I've hunted the Selkirk unit, since the mid 80's. Never really thought much about it as when I mentioned it to my uncle, he indicated that he'd been seeing them for 40 years in that area. He's 80 now and lives North of Usk, near Mill Creek. I've never seen them across the Pen Oreille River though and have spent as many days hunting Stevens county and the Huckleberry unit.
I've spent an enormous amount of time in the Blues. Spring bear, camping, Motorcycle riding, fishing and several years working for the USFS in Oregon and Washington, and never heard of or saw a Wolf. Although I personally have never seen the Moose Herd that is certified as being in the Blues, either. Cougars, now that's entirely another story...there's HUGE number of cougars in the Blues. Let's just hope the take to eating Wolves.
Sr
-
I don't know if I would call it a "herd", but the moose have begun to invade Walla Walla (I've got no problem with that). I have seen several cow moose in the past 3 years (one was across the road from my house in an alphalfa field last September, and they keep having calves, so I know there's a bull somewhere...
-
That's really encouraging. I hope the bear and cougar can't figure out the moose fawning and that they're growth in the area goes unfettered...It would be nice to one day have tags available in the SE. I've watched the Moose and Turkey go crazy up north and It really didn't take that long ~20 years.

Don't think it was, but sure looked lke a wolf crossing the road near Glacier in Whatcom County. Jet black, looked exactly like a wolf, can't be sure though.
-
I gave a ride to a retired wildlife biologist yesterday when I was cutting wood in the blues (ran out of gas). He worked with wolves a lot up there. He seemed to be of the opinion that us getting wolves here is inevitable. He also thinks that at some point the state will have to step in and control the populations. By hunting if the voters will stand for it, by controlled helicopter huntng if they won't. He said the deer and elk are going to suffer a bit while the state makes up it's mind though.
-
I wish the wolf huggers could see that it would be better to let hunters shoot wolves now instead of letting the population get larger. Think how they're going to cry when they see footage of shooting them from helicopters. :'(
-
Heard 2 in the Selkirks in 95

Just realized I wasn't very clear with my last post. The guy I am talking about was a retired wildlife biologist in ALASKA, and that's where he worked with wolves, not here in the blues. I am going to blame that one on the cold medicine... Sorry
