Anybody hunt with a lever action? What model do you use?
-
I just bought a Browning BLR in .308 this year to hunt deer on the east side. First time for me, always been a bolt action guy.

Marlin 1895 GBL 45-70

30-30 model 94. the new hornady rounds they make for lever actions are awesome. I call it the john wayne. iron sights, if you can hit a coffee can at 100 yards your golden! fun gun though! good luck!
-
.32 special in picture and I also take out my BLR on some hunts. Round two on moose with the .32 is about to start... Less than a month.
-
Nice!
I've got an old Model 94 .30-30 that was the first gun my grandmother bought for my grandfather, I'd like to use that some time. It has an original side mount with a 4X Weaver on it.
-
I hunted with a model 94 .30-30 for years in NH and killed a lot of deer with it. Lever with open sights is great for thick woods and brush.
-
I used to hunt a lot of bear and used a Marlin 1895SS in 45/70. Most of my buddies used Marlins in 35 Rem. They worked quite well. Mine had a Redfield peep on it.

My dad always hunted WT with his .35 Rem, not sure if he still uses it though.

444 Marlin, 44 rem mag 1894 stainless.

Winchester .308.
-
Four years ago i got a 3pt whitetail with my dads Browning blr in 358 and last year i hunted the general season with my Winchester 1886 light rifle in 45-70 i didn't get anything with that so i took my Marlin 336 ss in 30-30 and shot a spike whitetail in the northeast corner durlng the late season.

Oh, and I use a Mod 71 carbine sometimes today.
-
I've got a 1895 gbl in 45/70 that I love. Never had a firearm ice enjoyed carrying as much as this one. Sending a 350g hornady flat point at about 2100 fps equals some pretty serious knockdown power.
I put on a good recoil pad, and a peep sight. I'll probably end up with another 1895, but the all weather version. Love the looks of that gun.
-
Ended up not getting to schedule a modern hunt this year but my plan was to use my old man's model 99 savage in 300. I will be next year though.
-
I have a model 99 300 savage I use on occasion for blacktails.
-
I like lever actions - but tube magazines are a pain - I hate having to jack out all the rounds to unload
-
Marlin 336 30-30 mfg 1957. I put Skinner sights on it. Wonderful to shoot!
-

tube mags are also very limiting in bullet selection--flat nose, round nose or hornady leverevolution squishy tips.
Something like a blr, win 88 or savage 99 you get the spectrum of bullets.
-
Marlin 1895 GSS with XS peep sights and Wild West Trigger. So light and quick on target.
-
I carry a Marlin 336C 30/30 on occasion.

Spoiler: go with the 18.5".

Mine was from long before the current trend toward really short barrels on the 1895 and it was a pretty compact unit. I never gave any thought to having a shorter barrel and I used it chasing dogs throughout western Washington. It was pretty handy. I doubt that I would ever put a scope on a Marlin 1895. I used to use something like 50 grains of IMR 4198 and a Hornady 350 RN in it when I first got it. I ruined more than a few bruins w/it. The big thing is the bullet is not staying in a bear and it is too easy to kill a dog w/that bullet. It would be a great bullet for elk or moose though.
-
I shot my first deer with a model 94 30-30. Then several deer right after that with a model 99 300 savage. I still have the savage. I've always wanted a BLR. Love the lever guns!
-
I shoot my Grandad's 1948 Winchester Model 94 30-30 for deer.
-
Winchester 88 in 308
I also have a Marlin 336Y 30-30 that is a great little carbine to carry in the thick stuff.
-
Like Pianoman, I used to hunt with a Model 94 30-30 for years when I was in Maine; it was a great "walking" rifle. But then I was robbed (sniff-sniff whimper) and the %^&* took my 30-30. Now I have a Marlin 336C 30-30, with a big loop and few other goodies. Nice lever action! I also have a Marlin 1895 GBL guide Gun in 45/70. I haven't shot anything in Washington with it yet. GORGEOUS lever action carbine! It's just as accurate as the 30-30, but I'll admit it, the 30-30 gets taken out a lot more often. I mostly used the 45/70 for hog hunting in Texas, and there are no hogs here. I guess I need to have a run-in with a bear before the 45/70 goes with me.
-
Another Winchester 88 in 308. Folks gave it to me for Christmas when I was in Tonkin Gulf YC.

This is close to the load I'm running. 49.5g h4198 under a 350g to or entity hornady.
Everything I've read said this bullet is wicked on bears, were you not getting expansion or something?

Here's my model 71 in .348.
-
My cousin swears by his Marlin 336 .30-30 and open sights. Most lever actions feel too short for me at 6'4" tall, and I always joke with him my 30-06 has more energy at 300yards than his 30-30 does at 100yards. Lever actions make PERFECT hunting rifles for thick woods areas but lack at longer ranges. With the newer Hordany Lever-Revolution ammo you can strech the .30-30 accurately to 275yards or so.
-
I hunt with a 308 win in model 88.
-
First gun I used was a old Buffalo bill commemorative 30/30 Iron sites. Still take it once in a while for bear of Cougar hunting. Also have my dads old 30/40 Krag lever action I still use once in a while.
-
Killed two bulls in the last two years with my marlin 45/70
wow!!

I have the top one ,from my grandfather who used it in Minnesota. 1920 era
-
My "backup" rifle - Marlin 336 carbine in 30/30 with Lyman peep and fiber optic front for old tired eyes -
I've yet take an animal with it but I can ring a 10" gong all day long at 225 yards with it using Sierra 150 grain pro hunters over 31 grains of Ramshot Xterm.

Perfect expansion, but they went on trough and kept right on going. I dug one out of a tree one time that went through a small 200 lb black bear and it was four inches in. Since we were hunting w/dogs back then I switched to the lighter 300 gr hp bullet that stayed inside almost always. Both bullets were good bear medicine.
-
Browning BLR 30-06. Both elk and deer. 180 grain for elk and 150 grain for deer. Love it and have shot more animals with than I can remember. Been using it for over 20 years.

i drew a clockum cow tag this year, never really thought about it but im thinking after this thread that ill be taking gramps .32 special. 170 grn ammo. anyone hunt blewet pass area, can i get close enough for the ole open sight lever action on a cow? dad hunted there last year so he knows the area somewhat, i havent been there, or am i better off to take something more accurate at 200 yrd plus?

That's cool! I would just go for it, don't second guess and play what ifs in your head. I loved bringing the .32 special that was passed down to me on last year's moose hunt with my dad. I'll be bringing it on this years moose hunt as well.
-
Been getting interested in a lever gun. Another year or two and I should be able to start deer hunting again annually, not just elk.The place I want to try for deer looks seriously thick, so something short and fast handling would advantageous. I'm liking the looks of the BLR takedown in .358Win. I want a round that'll drop a deer quick as tracking in that area might be tough, plus there's likely bears in that area, and a close range bear encounter isn't a time to minimalist on caliber. I shoot 9.3x62mm for elk, so the recoil isn't a barrier.
-
although not a lever action my granddad had a 35 whelen I wanted pump action.
-
Used to use one in 30-30 for culling roos, great fun but Moved the old girl on.

Marlin 30-30, 336C I believe, open sights. Been my go to gun when I've been rifle hunting in the fish lake area.
-
Going to be hunting with my Henry 45-70 this year. Pretty excited to haul out the lever cannon!
-
94 winchester .44 mag handy little gun
-
Win. 94 in .375 was my go to elk gun when I had to 'get down in there'. 275gr. Cast bullets from an old double mold.
-
Got a Winchester .25-35. My grandfather traded two chickens and a magazine subscription for it sometime in the 40s. Killed a few deer with it. Awesome gun. But these days I usually take my .300 Win!
-
My first rifle was a used Winchester 88 .308 with a 4x leupold. I bought it with my life savings at age 12 for $200 in 1980.
I hunted with that rifle for 20 years. I took many deer and elk. My nephew got his first deer with it.
Amazingly accurate. I have never adjusted the scope.
It has been sitting in the gun safe for several years now untouched. I plan to have it re-blued and the stock refinished.

I'm using my ported Marlin guide gun 45-70 this year  :hello:

My wife hunts with her model 88 in .308 cal

I love that moose with the 32 win . my next lever gun will be a 45-70 what is the smoothest most accurate model and brand men ?
-
my 1895gbl has never left me wanting in accuracy or smoothness, I will be buying the all weather 1895 this next summer though, I think its probably the best looking gun out there.
-

Coach, I had a pre 64 Winchester in 30-30 (dumb caliber) and I have a older Marlin 4570. The action on the Marlin is a lot smoother. The Marlin does not shoot the 300gr well, but is very accurate with 405gr. I guess the new Remlin Marlins are not as smooth
-
Model 94 in .32 Win. I have taken deer and elk with it. Everytime I carry it in the field I think of my family members who hunted way back and killed a ton of animals with simple but effective gear..
I try to carry the bow, or .32 win every modern season atleast a couple days then the Boomstick comes out.
-

I have a Winchester 1886 extra light rifle in 45-70 it is by far the smoothest lever action i have handled.I have or have owned 3blrs,3 mdl 94's,3 mdl 99's and a marlin 336ss in 30-30 and i shot my grandfathers model 88 in 308 all very nice guns just not as smooth as the 1886.I have a Williams FP peep sight on it and out to 150 yards i can hit a cantaloupe pretty much every time. With a steel butt plate and 45-70 ammo i don't shoot it a lot in on sitting. P.S. not my gun but it's identical my pictures always come out terrible lol
-
I was planing on hunting with my 1895 Winchester reproduction this year but I won't get to. I wanted to put a receiver sight on it and develop some loads but I got busy and didnt get around to either one of those little projects. So... I'll have to save the 1895 for another year.

Do Not get Henry. Go Winchester. IMHO Henrys pretty rough fit and finish

I dig my win 88 .308. Lever action with detachable mag. Killed my last couple bucks and last couple bears with it. Shots from 10 - 350 yards

What caliber is your 95? I've been looking for a 30/40 Krag saddle ring carbine reproduction to go with my original handed down. How do you like yours? Have you compared it to an original on feel/finish?

Mine is a .30-06 SRC, haven't got much trigger time with it but I like it quite a lot. I'm going to load up some 220 grain bullets for it just because I can. Last fall shooting off of the tailgate of my truck I put 5 180 grain round nose (of what I thought was garbage factory ammo) into a nice little group of 1.25-1.5" at around 80 yards so it's got potential to be an accurate rifle. It's so well fitted and polished it dang near operates itself once you start running the lever. I also have the reproduction Lyman receiver sight for it (available through Buffalo Arms) but haven't gotten that mounted up yet. Don't have an original to compare it too but except for the two safeties it's a pretty faithful reproduction.
I'm also looking for one in .30-40. It figures I can't find one because when I bought mine there were a few for sale but I haven't seen one for sale since then in that caliber.

Ya man my 30/40 is crazy accurate as well I have a Williams peep site on it. Does your gun have that safety where you have to make sure the lever is up against the gun? My brothers has it and it's annoying as hell. I was hoping the reproduction 1895's didn't have them. Basically like a 3rd safety. So you have the hammer, the button, then have to make sure the lever is up against the gun. To much going on. I would like the button safety though on the 1895 I have because I don't like having to lower the hammer with the gun loaded every time in the rain and stuff. Anyhow if you find a couple or one you don't buy let me know. Saddle ring carbine is what I really want. Do you have any pictures?

No the 1895 Winchester doesnt have the button under the lever, it's got a hook :chuckle:
It's a two piece lever that engages the hook, kind of a funky design when you look at a schematic but it's never given me trouble. The reproductions also have the rebounding hammer and the tang safety but no half cock notch like the originals.
You can sometimes find a Browning reproduction from the 80's, these dont have the rebound hammer or the tang safety and are identical to an original except for their markings. Unfortunately Browning never made a SRC version only the longer rifle version.
Here's how it'll look when I get the receiver sight on it, gives it another 10" of sight radius. Note that the saddle ring must be removed for this sight to fit.

Here's a picture of the safety hook and the two piece hinged lever.

And the tang safety. The hammer isn't at half cock like an original, thats where it sits when it it lowered without actually firing. I have a few parts and may delete this in the future but I haven't decided.
