Not a bad morning
Went out and hunted a few hours with young dog before it became too hot and before the snakes came out. Very pleased with how the 2 years dog is coming along. Many good steady points and all retrieves.
!/2 doz quail a few chukars. No huns but heard them
boy are the birds jumpy this year. Especially the chukars but the numbers look good
came home and dog is acting birdy-quail all around my house and this guy sitting in a tree right by the house.
of course let them pass

Congrats on the mixed bag!
Looking forward to your ND trip report and pictures.

the quail seemed to lprefer the tall grass for cover. As mentioned birds seem more jumpy this year for beginning of season. Great points but hard to find the dog when pointing. Need a gps or beeper collar :chuckle:

ben, have to come up and hunt upland with me when you have time

Agreed, the CHUKAR were really skiddish this year. Might be the warner weather, plus the birds looked very juvenile. Huns were very illusive as well. The dogs were having a tough time locking them down. I shot 3 more birds, all wing shots and they coasted down the hill. I was also shooting a new 28ga, average shot distance, except for the one on the truck, 40 yards. All the birds we put up yesterday flushed wild, again, except for this one that was pointed.
Hopefully the cooler weather will change all this...

I always leave my lc smith Uggie and Merkel behind and grab my semi when I anticipate chukars :chuckle:
Anticipate a 40 plus yd shot
And put in the full choke
My dog pointed and held a covey of 30 plus covey at least 40 yds away

Same here, only covey that held was a covey of young birds. Numbers looked amazing but a little warm and we did see a snake.

My favorite chukar gun is a 6lb 16ga sxs hammer gun with a sling and 1 or 1 1/8 oz. 5's. Good out to 40+ yds.
