Title: Peeing in the woods?
Post by: Soundbite on October 09, 2016, 05:18:19 PM
So this maybe the dumbest question ever but it came to me today while I was in the middle of a clearcut scouting. So here is the question...
If you have the choice would you pee in a clearcut or closer to the road, does it matter?

My thought prosses was that if I pee in the middle of the clear cut I want to hunt that maybe the dear would keep there distance from that point... as a kid my mom always had me pee around the yard to keep the deer out. I now a clear cut is much larger but every little bit helps and we are down to leas than a week to go time can't wait!

If possible, try not to pee where you plan to hunt. If I have to per where I am hunting, I try to at least kick a little hole and then cover it. I will even sometimes break a few branches and lay it over the top

So in the Midwest I know guys that pee in mock scrapes. With all the rain either way it wouldn't matter.  I have never had an issue, other predators pee in the clear cut.

The deer will lick your urine for the salt, don't worry about it.  Lot of claims show they're attracted to it but I think it's just our salty diet they want.

I wouldn't pee in my deer stand or ground blind and usually go on the road before I dive over into the brush.

Yep, not a problem to whizz around deer; won't scare em off contrary to popular opinion.  MD are the biggest whizz lickers of them all. Pee well away from your tent in MD country or its like putting salt blocks out and they will keep you awake at night.

Yeah I thought deer would be attracted to the salt like mountain goats are.

I usually pee from my treestand, and also pee in the corner of my ground blind. Never seen it make a difference. Once my pee became a buck scrape over night.

Like pb said don't drop a d from the stand!  :dunno:

I try to pee on rocks. If your scouting for mountain goats it's probably the best thing you can do to up your odds of seeing them. Not to mention they will dig BIG willows trying to find more.

I think there were a couple of studies in the Midwest on whether deer would stay away from a mock scrape with human pee sprayed on it.  The bucks showed no difference in marking those scrapes compared to real scrapes.  Apparently, as noted above, they don't freak out about human urine.

That begs the question, why spend $6 a bottle for buck or elk urine to spray on yourself when you can just piss your pants before you hit the woods?   :chuckle:

I have had blacktails, shy from an apple that I had picked up and tossed to what I thought was a better spot, but I've never had one even show the least concern over a spot I took a leak at and that includes mature bucks.  They either seem attracted to it or they just don't care.

back in the day... before we had all these store bought scents for hunting... lots a people would make mock scrapes and pee in em... of find an active scrape and pee in it... they killed deer all the time...  I wouldn't worry about it at all...

I forgot to add that I've seen many reports of guys peeing off their tree stands during the rut only to have a buck come running in while the hunter still has his pants open.  Apparently the splashy noise makes them think there is another deer close by.  Whether they are looking to fight or hoping to breed - I have no idea.

We have used it to "bait" deer into our fishing camp during the summer. We learned to do it further from the tents so they don't keep us awake all night.

From all the years of hiking and backpack along with hunting I have found it doesn't bother them.  Typically where I have gone pee, they deer or elk will go over to it and lick a hole into the ground.  Interesting stuff.

The reason hunters who put lot of time in treestands are successful is because at some point they peed out of stand thus attracting a deer..  :o

I have a friend who is an awesome wildlife photographer and hunter and is also on this site, who puts up a rubbing post to attract big bucks. He has a game cam trained on it. One of the things he does to attract deer to the post is pee on it. He says it really works. Maybe he will chime in.

I picked a spot to test this a while back. I hung a trail cam on a tree in an average spot. I peed  about 20 feet in front of the cam. Every 2 weeks when checking my cam I re-peed. After a year the ground  was beat to bare dirt and I had thousands of picture of deer bear coyote bobcat racoon squires etc.
They were sniffing or peeing in that spot.  I have kill a bear from a blind where I peed 30 yards out in my shooting lane. He came in sniffed, I shot.
Always take a full bladder with you.

I read an article on this very subject a few weeks ago.
The conclusion of it was that human urine is a mild deer attractant.

Interesting anecdotes, especially the "mineral lick" spot that developed where someone peed repeatedly in the same place.  Alpine deer and mountain goats appear to be after the salt in human urine.   Have had bucks and goats march right up to me and crowd me to finish so that they can lick.

Beyond that it gets complicated with territory marking, leaving an I.D calling card, sex, plus probably other factors scrambled in there for many kinds of animals.  I.e.  Tracks in snow showed where a wolf diverted from its line of travel down a road to pee on the same spot that I had two hours earlier.   I.e. In northern BC while hiking solo I took a leak when a caribou cow was about 30 yards from me.  She stared, carefully aligned herself straight toward me and squatted to pee while keeping her eyes locked on mine.  Hmmm...  so the next day I did the same as an experiment with a herd of four caribou inside of 40 yards.  The biggest cow did the same routine...  I have no idea.   :dunno:

That said, I still try to avoid pee scent near where I plan to sit or hunt repeatedly.

I considered replying to the title of this thread by merely saying, "No."   :)

An old friend who still guides elk camps at 81 in MT once told me that human urine is an effective cover scent for elk hunting - pee on your boots. I don't know about the different species of other deer, but I can't imagine it's too different.  :dunno:

For the first 5 years of bow-hunting I carried a giant bottle with me to my stand. I would spit my chew into it until I had to to pee, then I would pee in it an stop chewing.I never peed or spit  from my stand...always spit and peed in the bottle.

Now I just do whatever from my stand...no impact whatsoever.

Ha, I was scouting for archery elk a couple years ago and took a dump at the end of a road. Heard elk calls about 100 yards away and up the hill so I went up to investigate and saw the elk, watched them for a bit and when starting to leave I walked past eh entrance of the road where I did the business and there were 3 elk standing about 15 feet from my pile. It was covered but still it smelled pretty bad and they didn't seem to be bothered. YMMV.

I was upland hunting and stopped to take a leak when the dogs started flushing chuckers all around me.  I grabbed my gun and ended up standing there with my pants around my ankles shooting birds and reloading the magazine on my gun while my buddy was laughing so hard he couldn't shoot straight.
