Title: Jasens 2016-17 season
Post by: jasnt on October 14, 2016, 10:29:05 AM
Well it's almost nov and I'm excited. Been a very very busy summer and I have not gotten my projects finished like I planned.  Looking forward to the first when I start trapping beaver that are causing major trouble for a local

I would hold off on those beaver as long as you can or until they prime up (middle to end of December)
Go grab some muskrats and mink.  Easier to work on and pay about the same price.
But I'm glad your getting out there like the rest of us.

I'm going to head out for rats the first of November.

only reason I'm hitting the beaver is to help out a local that is having major beaver damage. He wants them gone asap! I told him the first is the soonest I can help

I think you guys have it a little tougher on the east side than us wet side trappers. As far as the freeze up, and that.

Ya freeze up was no fun but snow makes finding sign much easier I think. Especially when it snows daily

im hoping so. Plan to set up several pre bait sights aswell. Have already got a cam set up where my cat trap froze up and the cat ate some of my bait and flipped the trigger but door was frozen up. Few pics from my cat cams. Time and dates are wrong

Jasnt, that last photograph of the cougar is really nice.  Is that an elk wallow as well, or only a cat site?

no snares, no leg holds, nothing that grips tha animal. Only cage traps.

No telling what the cat market will do this year but I won't sell my first cat

well then, that really limits everything,  how in the world so you use a cage to catch a beaver, muskrat or even a mink for that matter??

yes , its not easy but it gets done.  Coyote seems to be the one that's almost impossible

I still want to try some large, trigger system double door traps (or open 3 door Kirk style traps) on well used Coyote trails. Lots of feathers, good lure & urine placement. Maybe even have to try live bait. I've read about it being done on the Trapperman forum. Probably gonna get one of them 3 legged or manged up *censored*s but who knows. Worth a try with the right traps

Bruce is probably right but let's be honest. None of us are in it for the $$. It would be nice to get some extra cash but none of us will ever get rich trapping.  Some trappers might break even some day.     As for coyote trapping I 'm still working on a coyote trap I think may at least catch a few. I know Wdfw has caught coyote in a large trap built from logs. I'd play more with large traps if we could trap cougar

If you can swing it start prebaiting where you are going to trap cats at do a whole skinned beaver and nail it to a big tree through the tail up high like 7 feet the cats can get it no problem but coyotes and skunks and such can't  :twocents:
    Good luck Jake

that would be a sweet thing to catch on game cam! Ol longtail Tom stealing the beaver bait I think that might put jasen into predator hunting mode!

Checking my traps in the dark tonight I get to the first swim threw and door down :whoo:  then I drag it out :bash: largemouth bass (bout 1lb.). He was happy to get back to the water and I re-set and went to check the 2nd. As I approach I hear a very loud splash right on the other side of my set! That beaver was about 3' from my trap. Splash hit my boots! Hopefully this weekend I can set closer to the activity.  Checked my areas from last year and still a bunch of activity. Even the land locked pond where they have eaten everything and have been eaten firs and other conifers. Tons of beaver this year!  Going to be a fun season

I caught one spawning kokene last year. Never caught one in a swim threw though. On the plus side I picked up 300' of 1/4" cold rolled round rod and 100' of 1"X1" 1/8" angle iron yesterday. Plenty of trap material for a bit, now if work would ever slow down I can get some traps built! This year has been the busiest year we have had since 2008 and add about $100,000.  I've had no time to do anything and chores/ honey do's are stacking up and still haven't got my deer. If this ends up being a heavy snow year I may never get free time. But I'm determined to get my cat this year!  Can't snow enough to plow every day right?!?!?

The guy on the wild north gets guaranteed prices, is that a government subsidiezed fur program? And is that way fur prices are down because Canadians flood the market with thier subsidized furs?  :dunno:

That dude makes a killing on Lynx furs.
Title: Re: Jasens 2016-17 season

Even lynx prices aren't what they used to be but they are still good
Animals you can catch in pretty much any state floods the market so they're not worth a whole lot now animals that are only located in small areas and not a whole lot are caught in the broad scheme of things are worth more

Caught a mink in the same spot as last year and a muskrat in one of my beaver sets. Reset the mink trap but not the swim threw. Another swim threw was triggered but empty. Major pain in the neck busting threw over an inch of ice to pull an empty trap. Moving those 2 to the river tomorrow.

ya this one is very prime. Fur is super thick and hide is white as snow.
Bunch of snow coming tomorrow they say. Added Vaseline to my mink trap triggers. Not going to have any freeze ups this year.  Had to chip threw 1 1/2" of ice to retrieve the trap the beaver was in.

Caught a flying squirrel today. He was happy to be let free.  I was surprised to see he ate some of the beaver meat. Moved all my mink traps and pulled one beaver set.

No doors down today but I did find mink tracks so I made a set where they seemed to be the most sign.
Coil went out in my truck so I be using the gf's rig.  Hope to get the part today and be out setting bait and making a cat set or 2

Had a miss last night. One of my beaver sets is in shallow water, Ice got thick enough to freeze into my trap holding one door open.  :bash:  pulled that trap and going to set a shorter trap in its place in a few days
No pics today since I forgot to charge my phone last night. Trucks still broke after replacing the coil which tested bad.  Hope tomorrow is a better day

very frustrating! Specially since this pond has pretty much eaten them selves out of house and home. Eating white fir.  Was hoping to clean this pond out but they are so trap shy and now I got another miss. Just keep educating these beaver. Plenty more ponds to trap but was hoping to clean out this pond.

Haven't update in a few days. Still having truck problems. Pulled all my sets but one beaver set. Hopefully I'll have my truck back together today, if I can find the socket that pin-balled it's way down between firewall and motor. I so need a shop!  Got one of my cat traps all tuned up, finished my pack frame bag, fixed my hand pick, and tore down the giant trap I'm building for a friend. I got a better plan and I'm not letting this trap leave till it's perfect.
Hope to be back on my line tomorrow as I have to check the one set.

Seems like a lot more snow than usual for this time of year around here. A couple of my cat lines are 1500-2000 in elevation and the snow is super thick already. Unless we get a long warm spell, I doubt Im going to be able to trap it this year. May have to look into a used snowmobile.

Took my brother out to check and do some calling. After checking my cat set we went farther down to punch in a trail to the bottom. Get half way down and find cat tracks. So we stopped and started lip squeaking on the back of my hand. After a bout 10 min my brother says he heard what sounded like a cat meow. Never saw him but on our way back up the trail we see cat tracks in our tracks. We find where he spooked back up the trail a bit then bailed off.   At least I know now that the cat knows the meat is there

Hopefully the video works

All the skunk talk yesterday and then I show up to one this morning.  I'm pretty sure a weasel stole the pheasant wing out of my bobcat trap. Had it just in the door as a teaser and it was gone. Bunch of weasel tracks all over the set. Tomorrow I'll put in a set for it as well.  Found some otters today. Saw where the den was and the toilet.

Got 2 otter sets in today. Found some rat sign so I'll set that tomorrow. Hoping to check cams tomorrow on my pre-baits.  Snow is deep! But I was able to bust my trail in to the river. Should be harder for theaves to find my traps with the trail dropping in to the river. A lot easier walking the river than the snow!

Problem I have is duck hunters in the lakes around me don't take well to me motoring  by them at first light :dunno: seem to think they own the lake. I wish I had a pack in area like Jason but so much ground around me is privately owned or big timber company that want a butt load of money to be on there ground

This cat is driving me nuts. He has not been back by my trap but has been just about everywhere else. Tracks are all over and it looks like several different cats. Wonder if a female is coming in heat a lil early. I touched up my lure and made a toilet near by with scat from our young tom at home. I'll give this spot a few days before I move it. Haven't gotten to check the bait sights yet. More snow coming tonight 😓

Had to dig out my cat trap this morning and the plow berm so I could park.  Snow Is very deep now.  Missed an otter due to door freezing in to the ice again.  Moved The other otter set to the run they are using under the ice to go around the closed door. Dug it out deep so my trap is 4-5" under water and fenced it in with the logs that made the Chanel and now the fencing I put in.

No tracks or hair that I could find but the trees are shedding snow all over.  Didn't have bait with me. Had to take the GF's rig due to truck problems again. no nothing was froze. Tested it 3 times... Flawless.
You can see my trigger wires are huge. Idk how a cat could even touch the bait with out triggering the trap, it's very sensitive.  Door could not have been froze it had 1/2" clearance and all joints are heavily lubed with Vaseline along with the trigger and door latch, and locks. I'm at a loss. Hopefully it comes back tonight

Im still having a blast and won't give up.  I'm sure if I moved one of my cat sets farther down I have better luck but that would add 40 min to my line. I know come feb this cat will be running this area hard. He is a large tom or I wouldn't give him the time

I've been keeping a kinda journal on all my cats this year and the one thing they all have in common is that every cat has been caught with straight castor and oil sacks mixed with glycerin and nothing else and a big chunk of beaver

Good to know. I been using greys and spots and that special mix you told me about but I don't think anything will help when the cats just aren't there. Only thing keeping me going is the knowledge from last year,  when the snow melts the cats are everywhere. Can't wait till thaw.

I'm having a hell of a time trying to get some cats on the east side where they were Hitting prebait a month ago now they're not and only getting yotes so I'm sticking to the books as in where I know they were and trying to keep fresh beaver in and lots of castor

I agree they are quick and easy and with a few areas set the come in faster then you can free up stretchers for the next batch! Speaking of which I am using old plastic political advertising signs this year. So far they work great thanks trapperman for that neat easy to make stretcher!

Thank you for this tip.  I have access to a bunch of old political signs, enough for to many muskrat stretchers.

Been sick as a dog last few days. Getting ready to go check.  For the first time ever I hope I don't have a big beaver to pack out.  This flu is kicking my butt.

My wife, both kids and me are all dealing with a nasty cold. Not as bad as the flu but still sucks. Took my youngest to the doc today because her cold has gotten to the point she's having a hard time breathing and they sent us home with a nebulizer.

Monday night I started feeling it. Today wasn't hell. Still very sore but was able to play in the shop a little this afternoon.  Looking forward to my next check.  When I caught that last beaver I seen it had left some unchewed sticks just a little up stream from my set. Well last check I see they had been cleaned and a few more added to it so I fenced off the run next to the set hoping they go threw my set instead of swimming 40 yards back down stream to go around and brave the fastest water.  Rat sets where all moved around so I anchored them and did more fencing. Might be otters messing around again. Saw some big orange stains in the snow with mud streaks coming from the river. Never seen that before :dunno: the snow melted a bit and froze back up so now it's thick and crunchy and only us heavy critters are leaving tracks.   Also learned I got a leak in the crouch of my waders.

:yikes: what are you doing to them? Lol. I think mine is a seam leak, they where used when I got them last year. It's about time for new ones but $$ is tight for me this time of year!!!  Hopefully a lil shoe goo will get me threw

Jasnt,
If you really want something good to fix those waders get rid of the shoe goo and get some NP1 poly urethane sealant.
I've been using it for several years and it is the best stuff. It seals permanent and stays flexible. It seems to stick to about anything no matter how slick. I have even patched holes in the soles of my boots. It just never comes unstuck.
Downside is I only have been able to get it online and it only comes in gun grade. Also it takes a couple days to cure.
If you open the tube as usual after a while the entire tube will harden. Here's a trick to avoid that. Put the tube in the gun and puncture the tube near the back of the tube. Advance it enough to get what you want, then take the tube out and wrap it with duct tape to reseal it.
I would never go back to shoe goo or aqua seal or any of the other similar products

Thanks Bruce I will order some. Haven't used the shoe goo yet, I was hoping it would be better than the ruber cement I used before. If you don't mind I'm going to copy and paste that in the tips & tricks thread. 👍🏻

Caught another nice beaver. Fencing off the other run I think helped. Still a lot of beaver in this area so I'll try to pull one or 2 more from this spot. Still no rats :dunno: why cause the sign is there.  First pic is the set 2nd is the fenced off run

46.2 lbs

Well it's been dry last couple checks so I'm moving down river next check. Left them there one more since my fencing got pushed threw up stream so I double up on the fencing and moved the set a little farther up stream. Seen some otter sign near by so I'm hoping to have one. Hoping to be back after the cats by the first. I've got a ton of beaver meat right now so I'm setting up some more pre Baits this week. Been seeing cougar track almost every check, sure wish we could trap them!!! This last check looked to be a much larger cat

Any chance I could get a couple of beaver from you later this month or next?  If not no problem, I need some bear bait over in Idaho and I'm not going to get a WA trapping license at the end of the season.
