Only one, it was a bull but no antlers. It was a depredation hunt and the hunter out before me shot his mother, the bullet went through her and into his upper shoulder. He couldn't walk so I put him out of his misery, with my bow. Boy was that a tasty elk.

Let's see, I skipped school for a week back in '70 for my first elk hunt, so my numbers aren't that impressive.  Did have a string of six years with at least one bull, though.   It made it easer for me since I could buy an OTC tag and hunt close to home.  Even took one bull (my first archery elk) on a quicky hunt after work.  Those were the days...

So your average is about 1 every other year. That's pretty darn good if you ask me. I believe the average elk hunter is 1 every 8 years or something like that. You are way above average. Outstanding!

I shot my first elk on 9 11 2001 in the umtanum unit.

I drew a special permit for archery. hunted the Quartz Mt area for 7 days with little success. Other hunters were telling me about all the bugling going on in the area that i was hunting in (what a bunch of BS). Seen some elk in the dark timber but was never able to get a shot off. On the sixth day i was frustrated and went road hunting after the morning hunt, spotted a spike bedded down just of the road, went to take a shot and my arrow fell of the rest, released the tention, replaced the arrow on the rest and drew back. The elk stood up and was tired of waiting for me to shoot so as soon as i released my arrow he turned side ways. My arrow buzzed right by him (probably spitting a few hairs on his side) and buried its self in a log, Away he went........

The next miring (9 11) after a unsuccessful morning hunt i returned to camp and packed up to spend the last few days in  in the hills above Wenas. We were on our way to set up camp when i spotted a small bunch of elk rite off the rd. I pulled the truck behind a noll hill and snuck up on the bunch. I put my sights on the lead cow until the two calf's blocked my shot, so put the sight on the spike (the farthest one away from me) and released my arrow, piercing his hart and both lungs. H walked about 70 yards and layed down to die.
I walked back to the truck and asked my dad if he was ready to set up camp or field dress an elk. he was excited, for this was the first animal i have killed. After we dressed it out and loaded it on the trailer we headed home to find out what the hell was going on in NY. the radio stations we were listening to did not give very good info on what was happening.

I was looking at the poll and someone has no desire to get an elk.  :dunno: Wow, you don't know what your missing.  The meat is superior and chasing elk is the most exhilarating thing in the world! Especially during the rut. I live for it.
