Title: Cool experience today with a young hunter
Post by: Westside88 on October 22, 2016, 09:49:40 PM
So my day started off pretty much as I'd hoped. I shot the buck I was after about 10 minutes into my hunt. I rode my bike out to retrieve my game cart and headed back in. Along the way I saw 6 more deer, one of which I suspected was a buck, but he was a little too far to tell for sure without my binoculars. I was most of the way to my buck when I met a young hunter he congratulated me on my success. I mentioned that it's been awhile since I've shot a nice black tail. He shared with me that he'd never gotten a deer. I told him to stay with it and mentioned the deer were moving and that I'd just seen several. I wished him luck and headed to meet my Dad back where my buck was. I just got there when I heard a shot. I told Dad about my encounter and that it might be the young man. After getting loaded up we headed out. Sure enough he had shot a nice little 3 point that I believe was the buck I'd seen on the other side of the creek. He was a little embarrassed to admit he didn't know what to do next. ( He was hunting with a friend and had never been on a successful hunt). First I showed him how to properly tag a deer (two holes and all, he didn't have any string ) I told him, well now it's time to get it gutted c'mom I'll show you how. The look of relief was priceless. His hands were shaking from excitement. I gave him a good lesson and explained what I was doing and offered little pointers. When we were done I told him, now he can help somebody learn someday. Pretty cool to share the experience of a first buck

First animal I shot was a cow elk, I was by myself three miles from the truck at 4 pm this late in October. Sure could've used someone to show me some pointers!

Good on ya!

Cool I hope we have more younger hunters to replace us. Just a little disturbing though that he would shoot an animal and not know how to field dress it.

He had friends not too far away. He knows how now, by the smiles I'd say he'll be hunting for many years. I took some field photos of him with his buck while we were at it. I wish I had more hunting pictures from
When I was that age

Good on ya man.   Paying it forward.  He will repay it some day, when he teaches a young hunter.

Awesome and well done. Few years back a buddy and I were doing some scouting and saw some grouse along side the road. About 100 yards down the road we passed an older gentleman and a young gal. We chatted with them and found out he was taking his granddaughter on her first grouse hunt. We told them about the ones we had just seen and that we could show them where they were. We went back and beat the brush and had the pleasure watching her shoot a few out of the trees. The look on her face and hearing the excitement in her voice when she said "grandpa I got one!" was priceless.

From a newer hunter, THANK YOU.  You are what makes this forum great.  SO many hunters out there these days would have belittled him for not knowing exactly how to take care of his deer and you just jumped right in, showed him what to do and helped.
