I saw this on the WDFW website...
IMPORTANT NOTICE
New for 2009: Hunting Pamphlets Available Earlier (mid-April) & Special Permit Applications Due Sooner (May 20)
Starting in 2009, the Department will publish the hunting pamphlets in-house. This will allow for the pamphlet to be available nearly one month earlier. Since the pamphlets will be available sooner special permit applications can be submitted beginning April 20 and will be due by midnight on May 20. Drawing results will be available before the end of June instead of July
-
They moved the deadline up because in the survey the majority voted for the application deadline to be earlier, so that the drawing would be sooner, and therefore the results and notification of the results would be sooner. This was seen as a benefit by most so that they might have more time to plan vacation and schedule time off work. It definitely wasn't something the WDFW wanted to do. So I would say your take on it is way off. It had absolutely nothing to do with money.
-
I was giving them the benefit of the doubt. HAPPY that they listened to our complaints.
-
Your right Bobcat..I was wrong to make that statement..I will modify my comment...do think this is creative marketing to increase license sales by giving sportsmen what they want?
-
If anything I think they will bring in LESS money at least this first year of the earlier deadline, because many people will not buy their applications on time. A lot of people had trouble meeting the deadline when it was in June. I see this as a benefit to me and other dedicated hunters, as this should improve my chance of drawing a good permit. I think I'm due for a moose tag this year.
-
Me to I hope Moose and sheep or another big bull permit would be nice... :chuckle:
-
the state sets a dealine for apps, then they seem to extend it every year.that sucks for those of us who apply in plenty of time and pay attention to those dates.
-
I got drawn for a branch bull two years ago. Then a little while later the WDFW told me that they were just kidding and that wasn't the real drawing and then they did the"real" draw and I didn't get drawn. That was nice of them.
-
But that draw wasn't done correctly and that's why it had to be done over again. They never sent out notification to anybody of the results either, so I dont' understand why people were upset about that. I don't mind blaming them when they really make a mistake but in that case they really did nothing wrong. Well, other than possibly not getting the results posted when they said they would. I'm not sure if they were late that time or not.

If you looked on their website where it says either "selected" or "not selected" mine said "selected". I didn't know what area it was for but all I put in for is branch permits. I think many people where willing to forgive that mistake but the fact that they did that two years in a row pissed alot of people off. Your right nothing was sent in the mail but if you checked online many people were excited to see that they had been drawn.
From what I understand the last couple of years they used an outside group to do the drawings and since they screwed it up two years in a row they have since chosen to keep it in house like they used to do. So I doubt we will see any of those problems this year.

AMEN BOBCAT! I usually get all my choices in the system within the first week or two and then wait for everyone to miss the deadline and have them extend out my wait even further to catch the three or four people who had their heads somewhere else.... It's just wasting valuable scouting time.

I have not heard anything about them doing it in house. I don't think they have the ability or that it is even legal for them to perform thier own "lottery".
They have had an issue with the drawings (spring/fall/etc) each of the last 4 years. The same vendor has been doing the drawings for many years, though they did change their name a couple years ago.

There may be a few that don't get them in on time, but this is at least the third thread on this topic in the last month. Maybe we should start deleting them. :chuckle: :IBCOOL:

I'm sure most from this site will be aware of the earlier deadline and will get their apps in on time. But 99% of the hunters in this state probably don't even know about this site, and don't really start thinking about hunting season until about September.
-
To be honest it is about time. I hated waiting until the end of July to plan a hunt in washington in early September. I like this idea. Maybe it will sneak up on everybody so I can have a better shot a drawing something!

Ok guys, need to nip the whole "broken permit system" in the bud. First off the results from two years ago where not validated. Official notice was not sent out, nothing was posted on the website. The results that some people saw were not official, and were gained by a loophole in the system (that has since been closed). See my explanation about last years drawing at http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,8734.0.html.
Also main reason why this year's pamphlet and what not is coming out a month earlier is due to the fact that we are printing the pamphlet in house, and not sending it to a vendor. We are also able to use the work on the game management package to streamline the pamphlet process. Belive it or not but the surveys we've done have shown people wanted the dates to stay roughly the same.

Good post inside. If most people want the draw dates to remain the same then they suck. Earlier the better. For me it's like having Christmas postponed for a month. I get more excited for the the special permit drawings to come out then I do for Christmas. Any one else feel that way?

I'm hoping so. Maybe I will get my big bull tag and my Moose tag. :)

earlier the better for me,

earlier is better....I often find that the weeks i want for a hunt are already taken at work...so no vaca for me....earlier draws mean i can submit for vaca earlier..

Not me, because at least at Christmas I get presents. ;)
