Seems like it would be an interesting way to hunt.
-
ive seen some pretty awesome sneakboat type designs based on a kayak, a few chunks of pvc, and some grass mats, and you have yourself a single man duck destroyer!
-
I use one, sold my sneak boat and picked one up last year. Works great for all waters I have hunted, and easily holds my bag off deeks and all my gear.

What size do you use?

I have a 12 ft sit on top kayak, in hunter green. Weighs 78 lbs and 350 weight limit and I push the weight limit :chuckle: but no issues.
BPS now has a Hybrid Kayak. Part kayak part canoe. Wish they came out with it two weeks sooner, then I would have got one. There lighter then a kayak by about 5lbs and have a 450 lb weight rating, which would be heat to take the dog on.

I picked up a Nucanoe which looks like a sit on top kayak. Been a good setup so far and very stable.

Have you taken your dog out on it? I have 2 kayaks and thinking of selling for something that I can hunt my dog out of also.

I don't know much about Kayak but it appears they come in open cockpit on closed cockpit. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?
-
I picked up one last week, used it Saturday, gonna build some stabilizers and then I will shoot from it, but great to get around in. I will post picks when I get the rig done

I've been on and off looking at Kayaks for fishing and hunting over the last year or so. Haven't pulled the trigger yet but there are a number of really nice sit on top kayaks out there, some in Camo and some not but most are in the 75 to 100 lb range with 350-450lb capacity. Many actually come with a seat back that can be used similar to a layout blind but you'll have to create your own custom blind which should not be that difficult even if all you use is Camo netting. Anything 11 ft or longer gives plenty of room for a bag of deeks and room for a dog. Not much room to move around but still, in this kind of rig you can get into hunting spots most people will never be able to hunt. I just started my search through Google and DuckDuckGo and refined my search as I went. Good luck. Lots of good ideas and stuff out there to learn! :IBCOOL:

The bottom one CP posted is the new Hybrid Kayak that BPS has come out with. Wish they would have come out 2 weeks sooner last year, than I would have got that instead :bash:
I have found that my site on top is very stable and not easily tipped. I hoped out once and the water was deeper then I thought, but had no problem getting back in it, just the waders causing more effort then it should have.

How would you guys go about getting a dog back into the kayak in swimming water?

I hunt from a canoe. Haven't done anything to it for camo (it's already green). Pretty fun way to hunt, and it beats sitting in a blind for those of us with adhd.

No, I won't take my dog in the pods or kayaks with me. To risky. My lab is also 95lbs.

the sit in yaks ( top picture) give you some more storage options, a little bit of restricted movement, but you're also shielded from the elements a little bit more then a sit on top..
a sit of top gives you a lots of motion for your legs and lower body, the paddle is also more secure with a sit on top. there is easy access storage spots on both types, depeneding on the kind you get of course.. there are lots of options for both types.. I would prefer a sit on top ( what I am currently using). its a bright blue one and I had geese and ducks flying right over me. wish I had my shotgun..
As for stability, sit on tops are usually king is this section. due to them being "able to stand up" they have to be wider. 31" is normal ish, 33" is really wide and so on. The wider you get the slower you will go and vice versa. there are so many brands for the guy who doesn't want to spend an arm and a leg, around $500 is where you will get the best bang for your buck.. to an extent of course. perception kayaks have a 11.5' sit on top, it has a 500# capacity for $640. (what I am using A.T.M.) I can get more brands and what not if I get more time to look while at work today.

I hunt and fish out of my kayaks. All of my boats are sit on tops and I much prefer this style over a Sit in side type kayak. I have much more freedom of movement and in the case were I roll I can simply flip the boat back over and climb in. I mostly use the boat as transport and duck retrieval, though I have played with dogs out in the lake and with a little practice and a calm dog you and get a dog back into a kayak fairly easily, though it really changes the way the boat handles.

Thanks for all the info, great stuff.
What do you do with the gun? I'd hate to roll over and lose my prized Maxus. Do you tether it somehow with a safety line?

A Paddle tether works good. Just hook it to the boat and to the but stock of the gun.

Since I rarely hunt while in the boat it is in the bag and secured during transport. But a simple paddle leash would work to tether your gun.
