I know this should get some interesting responses.
whats the opinion regarding driving and hunting(unless disabled hunter) is it truly hunting or just driving with the chance of shooting a deer?
Reason I see on different sites where people are bragging they got x amount of deer, but knowing that all they do is drive logging areas all day long and when see one jump out and shoot.
-
More reasons to keep robo deer ops going

i go on backpack hunts all the time, i also take a drive to look for a blacktail now and again too. i don't see a problem with it to each their own. why do you care how other people harvest their deer? does it get frustrating hiking all day and not seeing much and then seeing a guy shoot one from the road, yea it does but we choose to hunt the way we like.
-
I see nothing wrong with it I do both. When I beat the brush a few days I enjoy driving and relaxin for a day

Backpack hunting is by far my favorite type of hunting but its definitely effective in some areas. Whats the point of walking some areas when there are roads every hundred or so yards that traverse up the hill?
There's nothing wrong with it as long as ur following the laws.

I wish everyone would rd hunt

I don't see an issue. 10% of the hunters kill 90% of the animals and they don't hunt near roads.
From my perspective, legal "road hunting" is a low probability game where you will almost never have a chance at a mature animal. Of course, you always have some chance and it is easier to burn fuel than boots.
I don't see it as fundamentally different from atv hunting or even using private aircraft to get into places too far to hike - it's an issue of degree you are going to make things easier. If I drive 700 miles to a trailhead and then hike in 2 miles and shoot a deer, I don't really see where I have the moral superiority of the guy who only hiked 100 yards.
It does lend itself to the temptation to cross the line, thus the need for robo animals.
It also leads to a strange synergy where the road hunters get what they want and the backcountry people have the advantage of knowing animals usually aren't within a mile or two of a road which reduces the possible areas to look by a huge percentage.
This year in Wyoming, I did both. The last day of my hunt I was on my way to an area to hike in when a doe jumped over the road and up a hillside. I got out, walked about 100 yards and shot her. After I had her in the cooler, I went to the place I was headed, hiked in and did a pretty hard stalk and ended up with a great buck and another doe that I had to pack out.
I certainly had much more fun on the hiking hunt, but I don't regret putting another doe in the freezer to feed my family. I don't know many people that hunt antelope without putting tons of miles on their rig.

guess frustration says the best.... one puts x amount of miles on the boots and nothing...one puts x amount of miles on vehicle 4...

I usually spend a morning or afternoon road hunting during hunting season, especially if it's been raining really hard or unseasonably cold. Most the time, we're in the woods puttin down leather. I don't have a problem with it.

in timberland, i can cover alot more ground with my truck and some good glass than i can on foot with glass. there is roads EVERYWHERE, why would i walk to the next spot in 30 minutes to glass when i can drive in 5? I do hunt an area that doesnt have any permanently gated roads though
-
If it's raining I would rather drive and glass from high points than get soaked hitting every draw hiking.
-
I like to do it if there is some shooting light left at days end.
But I don't buy that deer are not by the roads. In fact I think in hard hunted areas deer move close to the road where it is quiet. We have a spot we set old hunters in our group. They have taken 8 or nine legal bucks, some very nice sitting there.
200 feet above the road.
You can see the truck tops go by.
Yet every year deer are taken from that spot.
This year I had a doe bedded 50 yards behind my truck and 30 yards off the road in plain view. 37 trucks drove slowly by her in one day.
-
Who cares, so long as they are courteous, respectful, and law abiding?
They are out in the woods, supporting the sport and conservation efforts, and are not hurting anyone.
I see no point in creating differences amongst ourselves.

Last week I was driving up the dirt road to my house a truck in front of me stops a guy gets out shoulders a rifle. He then points it in to a hay field I say that is private property. He says he has permision. I say okay then pull your truck off the road pulls his truck over gets out and shoots a deer. He never hunted that deer he killed it. He missed out on hunting I pitty him he we look up at those antlers and no in his heart that all he did was kill a deer. I want to face my prey on their terms. I have two quads one above each knee this is how I roll. I am almost to the point of giving up binos trail cams you can keep them. I shot my deer this year at six feet with a stick and string. The goal to be the best predator on two legs. My dad is 72and can't get around real well so when I go with we cruise around the woods I wouldnt call hit hunting. If it what you choose it is legal go for it just don't brag about anything other than shot.
-
road hunting is hunting the same as horsepacking 30 miles back in. You might just see more people while road hunting.
I used to go on the high hunt and backpacked in for 20 years. Now that I'm older I can't go on the high hunt anymore and am just happy to find a friend who wants to go out and share a duck blind.
-
To each their own, as long as they follow the law. Open road patterns can, as Stein noted, be used very strategically to find animals. In one area where I used to hunt elk in Wyoming, it was basically a one-day hunt late in the season to find the elk, they were in the few places an ATV could not get - and then a brutal 2-day pack out. A good deal for the fit and strong.
Since my health went south, I have tried to acclimate to my limitations, but I just don't hunt nearly as much as I used to - I struggle for satisfaction hunting close to the road. I urge anyone who is physically capable to hunt backcountry while they are able, I feel sorry for the younger, apparently fit hunters I see just driving the roads, hopefully they are just taking a day off - but I doubt that is the case for most.

Road hunt, nothing better than cruising around in the cab of a warm dry truck, make sure to have the maximum number of people that will fit in your rig along for the ride, makes the drag to the road easier.
A few good road hunting tips
1) Make sure to have a big thermos of coffee, nothing worse that having to drive back to camp for more.
2) Get a semi auto like a remington with the removable magazine easy to throw in when your bailing out of the truck, no hinged floor plates, they get in the way.
3) If you do use a bolt action, use a rubber band to hold open the bolt, hook it around the bolt and then the butt stock, nothing worse than having the bolt jiggle closed when your riding around on all those bumpy roads.
4) For a hot lunch, wrap a u-nuke-it burrito in foil and put it up on the defroster, it will be nice and warm come lunch time.
5) Don't forget to take your gun with you when you stop to pee (after all the coffee), nothing worse than missing the big one because your standing there holding the little one.
6) A money saving tip is to get a 30-06 and don't buy any ammo, just stop at every camp and ask if you can borrow a shell or two because you forgot
yours, heck you'll have a box or two after a few days.
7) Make sure to have the biggest scope you can afford and set it on the highest setting, that way you wont need a set of binos.
8 ) Make sure to count all the bucks hanging so when you get home you can say i saw blankety, blankety # of bucks but nothing i could of shot at.

I hope this helps, it must work because the friggen road by my place looks like I-5 during rush hour during the rifle hunt.

Unless you drive round with blinders on, then who's not road hunting? At some point, getting back and forth to your hunting area.

To each there own, 10% of the people do kill 90% of the game. I think I'm in the 10% bracket and I hunt every way that gives me an advantage. And yes I have killed more animals from road hunting. So if you been out hiking all day and get back to the pickup 30 min. before dark and you start to drive and you spot a shooter are you going to pass just because your road hunting?
-
I claim no moral superiority either way. If I'm heading to a trailhead there's a legal deer off to the side the road and I can legally shoot it, I'm going to. I'm not against working for animals but if I'm going to shoot a meat buck I'd rather not be 7-8 miles back with the mules in some nasty hole if I can shoot one close to the road.
-
Do what floats your boat, it's not a contest.
Some places are most effectively hunted from the truck. Go on a Wyoming antelope hunt sometime. I had a late muley tag here a few years back, and a big chunk of that unit is best hunted from the truck too. Drive and glass, drive and glass. No reason to limit yourself to how fast or far you can walk. Conversely, there's plenty of units/hunts where you'll need to get back off the roads.
-
I agree with the last few posts. However here in Whitman county road hunters are a whole different creature. They drive around drinking beer, throwing cans out the window and if a deer is in a field and no ones around, drive right to it and give chase until you can bail out and shoot. Then tear up the field trying to get to it on the seeded ground. That drives me crazy. However, if your in the mountains on public ground, headed to your favorite spot, and a big buck jumps the road, get that sucker before he gets through the clearcut! Just follow the law and respect private property. I don't get why some people are unable to do that.
-
I love road hunters. "Hunters". It means less people behind the gate with me. I can't complain too loud because it's bound to happen but when you buy a walk in pass for timber land and some *censored* is driving around all the logging roads exploring and blows through your spot :bash:
-
I used to do it with my dad every year, he's disabled and now refuses to go. That being said in high pressure areas it's a great tool just drive around let others run deer out to you. I've bagged all my rifle deer that way in Vail before they were pay to play and you could drive all day and not find a place to get out and hike anywhere. I drive glassing spot to spot and if I see something on the way I will definitely give a go, I do put a lot more boot time in than when I was a kid.

Hmmmm one walking down a drivable road, and one driving down a road, both kill deer. Whose road hunting now?
I've killed them both ways, plus hiked in and killed them. Some have better memories depending on the situation at hand.
Plus like someone else said prior, sometimes the area only lends road hunting due to terrain, vegetation, etc.
When one gets long in the tooth one can only hike, and sit in weather so long. Does this mean they should give up thier hunting rights?

Everyone is not okay. I never said it is wrong to drive roads and kill animals. If done legally I could careless . The question was is it hunting and by definition it is not. One only has to logically look at the definition of the word. Killing a sow with cubs is legal but wrong. It is legal to shoot a elk at 100 yards with a 40 pound bow. So I won't except if it is legal it is fine camp.

animals use roads roads become part of the habitat if you are on foot you are at the mercy of the weather the terrain you 'll be out of breath, and you would be using more senses. So yes it is very different. Some areas only lend themselves to road hunting argument, that really leaves me speechless. No offense meant but really think about that statement. I understand the long in the tooth comment and want to spend time in the woods it legal do it. In 20 or 30 years I will say to my wife I am gonna get in my 2040 ford and go kill a deer, but I won't call it hunting.1

Do you feel more entitled to game over someone you consider a "road hunter"?

no not at all I don't feel entitled to anything at all when it comes to hunting. I do feel there is getting lucky and earning it.

You don't get to say what hunting is and what it isn't. Like I said, that's for each hunter to decide on their own, not you for them. And comparing road hunting to shooting a sow with cubs is ridiculous and like comparing apples to anvils. They're nothing alike. And some people can make a 100-yard shot. I'm not going to try it but I'm not going to judge them for it, either. You don't get to decide for everyone what's right or wrong. If they have a license and they're hunting legally, then stop judging and embrace them as fellow hunters and outdoorsmen. We have enough division and divisiveness in our communities. We don't need it between hunters.

Road hunting is kinda like baiting, people do it, but very rarely do you see write-ups or hear stories about someone shooting a buck eating out of a corn feeder or bailing out of their rig to shoot it , almost as if the hunter is ashamed of doing it. But I guess it is still hunting in todays modern world :dunno: :twocents:

In my opinion it is hunting, just one of many styles of hunting.
Hunting methods, tactics, and equipment change and evolve all the time. Is hunting and harvesting with a method, tactic, or equipment that may make it easier any reason to be less proud of the hunt? Does it make the person less of a hunter? Or make the activity itself any less of a hunt?
The answer to that question is just an opinion.
The hunter who looks negatively on road hunting but walks in and hunts with a long range rifle and likes to shoot 600 yards and further is looked down upon by some hunters who say you need to be closer or it isn't hunting. Those hunters are in turn looked down upon by some hunters who are of the opinion that real hunting is done by more primitive methods such as muzzleloader or archery. And in turn those hunters are looked down upon by some hunters who have the opinion that muzzleloaders and bows have gotten too technologically advanced. And so on and so on and....................
I personally consider all people referenced above as hunters and the use of all legal methods, tactics, and equipment as hunting. But that's just my opinion.

I do get to say what is hunting for me as you state that is for each hunter to decide. The opening asked for a opion I gave mine. I am not going to embrace anyone for knowingly killing a sow with cubs as you state I should because the are with in the law.

I put so many miles in on my mountain bike and hiking that if I shoot one driving back from the gate off the road I feel it was hard earned. In fact tomorrow morning I'm giving myself a break and going to be "road hunting" to switch things up

Road hunting.... is it truly hunting?
Trolling...........is it truly fishing?
Road hunting is just one of many methods of hunting, just like trolling is a method used in fishing. If you don't like the method, then don't use that method. But as long as the method is done legally I won't bitch about others using the method. I may not personally like the method as much as other methods, but might do it if the occasion presents itself. :twocents:

All hunters, whether they still hunt, hike, take a stand or road hunt, use a bow, muzzleloader or rifle all have one thing in common. There are people who don't want us to be able to hunt at all. Its important we all stand by one another. So yes, its all hunting and I support your right to be out there in the manner you see fit provided you operate in a legal manner and maintain a good name for the rest of us!
-
My last two grouse hunts I dealt with some road hunters. If your a member I hope you understand how your actions can ruin others days. First one was a ford 350 blue with a blue dirtbike. They were shooting their rifles and watching every bowl they came across. Not sure if they were shooting into a tree or in the air, but made me leave the area as I was on a hill above them. I did not feel safe near them.
Second one was a couple of guys in a black dodge Dakota, and if the driver spent as much time on not being a jerk as he did at the desert section of a buffet he would be a stand up guy :chuckle: Was grouse hunting again and with my kids. He drove by and then turned around, a hour later we finished our hunt, headed back to the truck and started driving down the logging road to find him blocking the road so his passenger could look out the window with binos. They then proceeded to drive between 2-5 MPH and stopping every time he saw a open area. I tried the high beam then the horn, but he would not let me pass. 13 miles later we reached the end of the logging road and I was able to get on the highway. :bash: :bash: :bash:
These are some of the reasons why road hunting has made me not a fan of it. Most times I could care less, just venting on the past few bad times.
-
Oh yeah, that is really irritating when you get stuck behind someone wanting to road hunt and crawl down the road while only doing 2 mph. :bash: And they won't let you pass because they don't want someone ahead of them to spook the deer or see them first. :bash:

Merriam webster says hunting is the activity or sport of chasing and killing wild animals.
Yes, road hunting is hunting.

I do get to say what is hunting for me as you state that is for each hunter to decide. The opening asked for a opion I gave mine. I am not going to embrace anyone for knowingly killing a sow with cubs as you state I should because the are with in the law.
You're just getting more bizarre with each post. I think you're just trying to argue. Not me. Have a nice day.

I do feel there is getting lucky and earning it.
Please tell us what "earning" it means.

Is a guy sitting in a tree stand hunting or shooting ?
-
Does the guy in the treestand have a pile of corn or salt or is it on a well used trail , it don't matter it's all a form of hunting,
-
Well I will say this, I have killed most of my deer because I saw them while driving. I still had to drive past them pull over, and then sneak back to get a shot. If driving somewhere to hunt and you come across a deer or elk and you are a so called "hike in hunter" are you going to drive right on by and go hike in? Someone said something about quality animals and that's probably true, but you don't eat the rack so who cares.
-
If you don't see the difference between driving the road. And scouting doing the work involved in choosing a site then sitting in elements for hours on end then killing a animal that you targeted in the off season. You should drive roads maybe you will jump something on the road.

How about road hunters that scout out areas? It still takes time and effort to know where to drive.

Who cares, so long as they are courteous, respectful, and law abiding?
They are out in the woods, supporting the sport and conservation efforts, and are not hurting anyone.
I see no point in creating differences amongst ourselves.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Shooting a deer or any animal out of a vehicle is completely disrespectful. You should give any quarry you hunt a fair shot at keeping it's life. That's why it's called "hunting." Shooting deer off of a road disgust me and I think it's pathetic unless elderly or handicapped.

I would argue that shooting a deer over a big pile of bait is less sporting then road hunting then....
-
In my opinion it is hunting, just one of many styles of hunting.

:chuckle: ok, I'll partake. Let's see, fair chance at survival, ok got it. Let's begin.
Let's start with your weapon, better pull that scope off, surely it's an unfair advantage. Once you have the scope removed, pull that bullet out, that is indeed unfair to an unarmed critter. Now let's go ahead and ditch the rifle , well, hang on , you may be able to keep that.
That nice warm coat you got on that allows you to stay out for hours on end, yep , take it off. While your at it, those high dollar breathable , waterproof pants, you guessed it, in the ditch they go. Now, those fancy boots you love so much with the high arch support, bye bye. Better let go of those perfectly suited socks you got at the bargain cave, way unfair.
Now that your butt naked, cold and wet with no weapon, you are now what the jury finds to be a "fair match" to your quarry and can now classify your self as a Hunter among men. Feel free once a kill has been confirmed in this manner to bestow upon all others your opinion as it is now gospel.
Oh, this just in, the useless rifle may be used as a club if you so choose. But be warned, this will leave room for the elitist to trump your method by using a large branch taken from the wilderness at the time of the hunt.
Good luck!

So that's why you hunt with an Atlatl using home made darts tipped with obsidian you knapped yourself? Obviously if use any technology in the aid of your hunting then you must be a pretty terrible hunter by your own definition.

Whoa easy there, an Atlatl is technology, I think what were being taught here is that naked with bare hands is the only true method of Hunting. Anything else is shameful deserving of public humiliation and criticism.

I make it hard by choice. There is some game if legal I would hunt with thrust spear. It is not so I use longbow most of the time. My camo choice is plaid. For most hunting I like wool and cotton. I have no gortex. I have a range finder it is called a right eye and a left. I am not a elitist I know by my choices I will kill less game. I am not good at long range rifle hunting I respect those that can shoot that well. I get close and leave the gadgets and corporate b.s. at cabelas. I just want a chance at pulling a kill off .Naked with a club I have no chance.

Why are you giving up early? The season is until November 15th. I took a Marine hunting Saturday I just met. We had a 6'6" bear around 350 plus pounds just off the road eating apples. It was his first ever bear hunt and the bear had his hind end twoard us. When it turned broadside it started to trot off. I told him, "Shoot shooooooooooottttttt!" He didn't fire a shot. We saw no fresh sign either because there isn't much this time of year. Point being the bear are still out and eating before winter. I know one thing, you can't kill one if you give up early. GET OUT THEIR AND KEEP AT IT. Patience and perseverance kills bears! Good luck and keep at it, it will eventually happen for you. God bless, and best of luck to you!!!!!!👍😁🐻

You always have a chance, if it required more than a rock we wouldn't exist. You like to make it hard by choice congrats, if you like making things hard to make life more rewarding take a pay cut, volunteer to give more money to your landlord, get rid of your vehicle and only eat what you your self have harvested. The guys that "make it hard by choice" have no clue of how hard it can become because of necessity. Stop criticizing others because of yourself delusions of grandeur as a hunter.

I'm assuming you're an archery hunter then, because shooting a deer at 200 or 300 yards when they don't know you're there isn't really fair either by your definition.
I don't know if anyone in this thread is specifically talking about shooting an animal "from" a vehicle. I think we'd all be hard pressed to say we wouldn't shoot the type of animal we want if we spotted it from the road while we were driving and it was legal to do so.

Zip it Beau! Road hunting is the way to go and I encourage all to take up the practice >:( 8)

No one answered my question who says road hunting is a sin. If you are driving to your "hike in spot" and you see a deer or animal that you have a tag for are you gonna drive right by? I would not believe anyone who said they would not try to get a "legal shot" so guess it doesn't really matter. What if you see your "target animal" because for some reason it did something crazy and came close to a road are you gonna drive by because you are in your vehicle?
I don't know about all of you but when the animals are far and few between I like to cover as much ground as possible. There are years I put 50 miles on the odometer and walked into several spots all day long without seeing anything. Then guess what is standing by the road while driving just before dark on my way back to the RV. Seems like I spent a lot of time sneaking around the gated and ditched roads for nothing. Still love sneaking around, but I am not gonna pass up any opportunity to fill my tag. :twocents: :twocents:

If you shoot an animal legally and put the meat in your freezer, you were hunting. Simple as that.
-
you guys and your anti baiting and road scouting.. if they are off of the maintained road and not shooting on, across or along the road (pg 87 #7).. its fair game man.. if its not more then 5 gallons (correction.. 10 gallons) of feed, fair game man ( pg 86 the baiting portion). rules are rules for a reason guys. if you don't like them, try and get them to change them. The Washington state big game hunting regulations state: that you are not allowed to have a loaded mag, or a round chambered while in any vehicle (pg 84 of your regulation handbook). cant shoot from within a moving vehicle (or inside unless you have a disabled tag) or moving orv. (pg 87 #5&7). so road hunting to you guys is just driving along the road, see a deer, get out, ready weapon of choice, but a stalk or walk to said deer, unleash your weapons power and kill said animal.. that is perfectly legal. by the book, said and done. actual road hunting is what the robo guys are after. the driving with a loaded mag or chambered weapon, finding said animal and shooting while within the vehicle.. that is road hunting per my interpretation of the Washington State big game regulation handbook. hunting is hunting guys and girls. some just want the meat, others want the meat and the "earned" feeling of it. its an opinion and everyone is entitled to their own... now matter how much someone else doesn't like it... have fun with this everyone

How tall do they have to be called a high horse?
I'm now realizing how terrible of a person I am and I'm full of self loathing since the last deer I shot I was riding behind locked gates on logging roads on a horse that was about 17 hands.
Ohh wait, I'm over it.

Speak it RT....I'm with you.
High Horse hunting can be defined many ways. Typically you will know a high horse hunter by their general distaste for anyone that does not in a way that fits their ethical paradigm. Often, this will be reflected by choice words such as "to easy" "pathetic". Often high horse hunters will attempt to demean or belittle others that may hunt legally, but in a way to cause such personal anguish that statistics and kill ratios will be used to prove their might. For an example, I sometimes you big words to show that I am so much more photosynthesis than the next person.
Baiting, road hunting, long range, modern bow vs longbow, muzzy vs modern....go ahead and continue to hunt from your high horse all you wish. As long as you do you will contribute to the already growing divide among hunters and add that much fuel to the fire. Be careful what you call pathetic and wrong because those that you push away may just someday need to be called upon to support you.

I take them near and far. I'm a big man but I lace the boots the same. I love and enjoy hiking but if the opportunity is there then it's there.

Imo. Everybody has their own way of hunting. As long as it is legal. Let them be. If it makes them happy and enjoy the outdoors. That's what counts

I'm pretty sure I murdered ground squirrels in my younger days. Learned an important lesson shooting those things, when shooting from a vehicle the guy with the 10-22 should shoot out the passenger side window only. If you shoot it out of the driver side widow you'll forever hear the rattle of brass when you turn the defroster on.

I shot them deep in walkins and one year with a broken leg i shot a nice buck from my heated leather seat in my truck. Then elk season rolled around and i shot a bull in my walking boot 😀 i usually wear myself out hiking then take a day and just take it easy glassing cuts and covering ground. To each there own but i do wanna get a "high horse" for transportation next lol

Shot 75 yards off a road, last day last year and I could not walk (ankle)
I should of let him go cause he was next to a road? Hell No.
Nice post RT.
I did my fair share of burning boot leather this year to no avail, the last Monday of the season Mr Buck decided to commit suicide by road. I still ended up packing him up a steep ridge almost a mile on our backs because he went down hill before I caught him for the kill shot.
I actually like packing them out on my back, it kinda feels good in a wired way. But I won't pass on a road buck either. :chuckle:

according to the WDFW regulations road hunting/shooting from a road is not illegal unless it is done "negligently"--not sure what the defintion of negligently is but we had a WDFW officer in one of our hunter education classes telling the students that they could basically shoot a deer from I-5 and as long as they weren't shooting negligantly it was legal--shooting from/off of a vehicle was ILLEGAL...if i had a beer for everytime someone posted that their way of hunting was the only ethical way to hunt and every one else who hunted different then them was a slob pathetic unethical hunter than i would have so many aluminum cans/bottles that i could take to a recycle center and not have to worry about working another day in my life. why do you care about how another hunter choses to hunt ? bad mouthing legal hunting practices only adds fuel to the fire of anti's. Also if you keep bragging about the monster bucks you shot behind such and such gate or off of so and so trailhead how long do you think it will take for the masses to start converging on those spots then the crying will be about how crowded all of these places have become? Yes i know many of you don't say exactly where you are hunting but most fools can figure it out
-
I don't see an issue. 10% of the hunters kill 90% of the animals and they don't hunt near roads.
Hah hah. You keep believing that. Where I hunt, there is pretty much a logging road on every ridge and in some of the canyons too. I stop and glass. I get down in the reprod. I get in the woods. But you better believe I have my eyes open when I'm driving between units. I say take them where you find them. I never noticed that the ones I have taken in the deep woods taste any better than the ones I have caught out in the open while driving.
-
I shot my buck this year on the way home from beating feet all morning and all archery season lol . Came around a corner about two miles from my house where the last decent cut is and spotted him bedded in the bottom . Got out walked a good ways into the cut , got a good rest , waited for him to stand up and smoked him . Drug him out whole . was home in about 20 minutes . I dont care what anyone thinks lol .

The good ol ETHICAL HUNTWA...
Its not your tag, you have no right to tell someone how to hunt. If I see a deer or an elk from the road I will stop and murder it.... Just the same as if I were 9 miles deep..
Its called, HUNTING.

Oh get off your high horse before you get altitude sickness!
:chuckle: I apologize to the spacing police.

Not sure why so many think road hunting can't be considered hunting. I've seen a few guys that know the land and the game and can get position themselves accordingly to require least input for a high output. One of the guys goes on a drive nearly everyday for his lunch break and scouts, finds all the different crossings and knows which deer will be at what point and what time. At the same time I have also seen guys on foot that are basically taking their guns for a walk, learning less and applying less than some of the guys in vehicles.
-
As of late I prefer to hunt em up in the woods away from roads, jump em in said woods, chase em until their right next to the road, then shoot em from afar...compromise?

@DoubleJ, would you please contribute your opinion to this topic discussion?

Dang! a 30" from the road! lets see though, Deduct 4" spread for road hunting, add back 2.75" for the steep climb out (if greater than a 2 to 1 slope) add in a bonus 1.33" of spread for admitting you road hunt, CONGRATS on the 30" buck!!

:yeah: Unfortunately I can believe it, this is the what this site has gone to, 8 years ago this would not be a discussion.
If its's legal then it's ok in my book. It may not be very sporting but it's food on the table.

Since we're on this topic, roadhunting kill. Drove the truck up and loaded him whole. Took him to the barn and broke him down there.

If you are not killing them bare handed while naked and living off the land and huddling under a bush at night in the cold you are just quibbling about how much technology is "ethical". Driving vs hiking, cartridge vs muzzle loader, rifle vs bow, pulleys vs sticks, thinsulate vs wool, electronic calls vs mouth calls, baiting vs stalking, spotting scopes vs eyes, it is all just picking the level of technology that works for you. Stay legal and get out there.
I prefer to get out into the woods and hike, but I also need to have more people hunting and supporting the hunting cause. When it comes time to lobby for hunting, vote for hunting, or open our pockets to support conservation we need as many hunters as we can get.
PS, when I go bow hunting it is with a wooden bow made by my wife and wooden arrows. If I ever shoot anything I will lord it over all you guys using training wheels. Really. :)

Beautiful deer. Beautiful country. Late season deer is my favorite time to hunt.

Road hunting truly is hunting if you ask the Native Americans as that's what they seem to do best

That is NOT road hunting kill, that is a deer hunting kill. :sry:
I know, I am very proficient in road hunting. In fact I have achieved the road hunting Slam in WA, ID, and Montana. Yep that's right, a slam, one of each species in all three states, 2 track, dirt, gravel, and asphalt. The last one was a little chewy though. I also believe I may hold the state record, it was a whopping 38 miles long. I normally don't post pictures of my trophy roads but I will make an exception this time...and NO, I am not long arming in the pic, it really was 38 miles (the pic just doesn't do it justice) and for reference in size, check out that huge bush on the side.
PLEASE don't try and decipher where this harvest happened, For this is my pot hole area (same as a honey hole for deer hunting.)
I am positive that this road has come to a intersection with another road, spread its gravel, and we will continue to see it's genetics in many more trophy roads yet to be made. :4w:
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Hunting is the process of looking for, or seeking to find your prey.
Truck, car, atv, motorbike, bicycle, horse, boots, etc, these are forms of transportation.
So if you are out and about looking for deer, YOU ARE HUNTING. Really does not matter what type of transportation you are using, if your looking your hunting.
-
That my friends is a honey of a road. Well done.
If I may ask, what did it run for processing? Did you have any summer sausage made?
-
No yet, still looking for some xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxl collagen casings, and a smoker that'll hold some redwood size logs. 8)

Ok, so passengers with me are lazy road hunters? That's I and my passengers best? Wow... :chuckle:

Road hunting does not mean shooting from a vehicle. I, personally, find hunting from a high horse pathetic as well.
Is trolling from a high horse pathetic as well ? :chuckle: I do like to troll at times but not sure if using a high horse is acceptable.
As long as they don't block roads and let others by I have no issues with road hunting. :twocents:

I believe a high horse is actually required, the short ones drown....

I've killed some animals from a road, and some 5+ hiking miles in. They are all special to me.

my only option sadly just glad to get out there wish i could beat the brush run the ridges

For blacktail I road hunt. Cover way more ground and see a lot of animals. Better chance of seeing a good one when you have a lot to look over. Any way you choose to hunt is fine by me but just be safe and ethical and legal. I was taught to road hunt cause that's the way the unit should be hunted. All roads and hiking would just put you staring at all the trucks and roads driving around. You'd just be hiking to a road that a truck is mist likley driving on.
-
I hunted hard today up behind a gate. Was actually planning on road hunting but I really like the area behind the gate and no one was there before light this morning so I took the spot. Hunted until 1pm, saw 4 doe 3 fawns. Probably hiked 6-7miles total and beat the hell out of a few clear cuts. Jumped in my truck drove down the road 2 miles and killed a spike 50 yards off the road drug him out whole. Unbelievable
-
It makes sense really. Roads are generally located on the most habitable areas. More food etc
-
This is a funny topic because this year was my first year hunting anything and we did the whole camp/drive to a trailhead/get out and hike 3-5 mile and look for deer thing. Seeing as I'm new to hunting, I thought that's what hunting was. I really had no idea road hunting was that popular and apparently effective. I'm planning on taking my girlfriend out for the late season hunt and will probably hike in again. My buddy and I are also planning a backcountry trip for next year. I'm young and very fit and love being in the woods so road hunting doesn't seem like much fun to me. It just doesn't really seem to involved. However, after being in the woods for a couple days and not seeing much, I'd be lying if I said I didn't try looking through my binoculars trying to find deer while we drove back to the camp. I'd also be lying if I said I wouldn't have shot a deer if I saw one. Personally I'd rather be in the woods doing my thing but to each his own...stay safe and legal

That's it. Hunt the animals in there habitat and that happens to be a tree farm. Some very nice deer killed off the roads.

Sit on a rock six miles from the road and wait for a deer to walk by you. Or sit in a truck and drive while a deer sits on a rock and waits for you to drive by. Not sure where the difference lays. Personally I could care less who sits on the rock and long as the hunter plays by the rules and enjoys him or herself.
