Title: Arrow recommendations 45 pound recurve
Post by: Westside88 on October 26, 2016, 05:56:00 PM
My friend from work is looking for some guidance on proper arrows for a recurve bow with a 45 pound draw weight. 28 inch draw length. What they're looking for is mostly target practice with the possibility of hunting some small game, birds etc. any input is appreciated. They're hoping to keep the price reasonable, but want decent arrows. I have my daughter shooting the eastons with the integrated tip. They would prefer to be able to change them

55-60 spine douglas fir with a 125 to 150 grain point if they'd like wood arrows.

thanks I''l pass that along. I believe they may be looking at getting either aluminum or carbon arrows, but wood would be cool with the recurve

My favorite carbon arrows are Gold Tip Traditional, I buy the blemished ones from Big Jim's Bow company.  They are slight cosmetic blemishes, nothing structural or unsafe.  With a 45lb recurve, a 600 spine cut to 29" with 125 grain field points would be in the ball park.

INMO the best to start with are aluminum. Easton 2016 cut to 28" with 125 grain tips will fly perfect and the price is definitely right. The Easton "Jazz" shafts are exactly spine and toughness alloy the same as their 'hunting' shafts but much less expensive. Look on ebay for good deals.

If you dont mind fussing with tuning carbon shafts then the previous mention of Gold Tip blems from Big Jim is a good start too. But really, aluminum are more forgiving of release, short draw, etc for beginners.

A minor thread hijack here (sorry), but I just got a recurve as well.  Starting with 45 lb limbs, but have 55's for later on.  I have a bunch of 400 spine FMJ's that I had been shooting in my compound before switching to a different arrow.  Do you think those would work okay with the recurve?

How long are your 400's? They might barely work for your 55# limbs if they are at least 30" long with 150 to 200 grain tips. Undoubtedly 400's will group miserably out of your 45# limbs.

A 400 spine carbon will flex at a rate equivalent to a aluminum or wood arrow rated at 75 to 80 pounds.

The FMJ's are only 28 1/2".  Damn.  Guess that means I NEED to buy more arrows.   :)

Also be sure to specify feather fletch. Plastic fletch will hit the riser or shelf causing all kinds of grief.

I have a 1/2 dozen 2016's uncut fletched with 5" right helical.  You're welcome to them.  The've been collecting dust for the past few years.  Inserts and nocks are also included.
