Title: Modern Firearm Eastern
Post by: CP on October 27, 2016, 12:13:09 PM
I'm having a hard time getting too stoked up for this but I'll be out there looking for a true spike.  Anyone else geared up for the spike hunt?

I'll be up there thru Monday.  Top of Reecer area.  New camp, hope they are friendly!  Anyone know approx. how many true spikes were taken in 328/329 last year?

Stay out of Ozone Acres unless you bring a peace offering
Good luck

Thank-You x-force, yeah I found the same information.  So there ARE some potential targets up there.  1800 hunters in 328 also.  1200 in 329.
Something in the neighborhood of 7% success rate.  But maybe this is my lucky year, I'll never know unless I go!!!  Gold Sierra, Marine Corps sticker.

87ford, do you have your wind farm pass? They are on a limited number per day this year and a couple days ago you could not get in till like tueday after opener.

Heading out tomorrow after work til Sunday then back out Tuesday afternoon for my taneum cow tag. Cows should be easier to find than spikes or so I hear.

Just got in and settled back home after the opener. Heading back out Tuesday or Wednesday hopefully. Didn't see anyone other than the drive in and out and got into elk both days. My cow tag looks very doable if I can get the time to get back.

Sunday ruined it for me and I'm done elk hunting the Colockum area.  People riding quads on closed roads, taking shots they have no business taking, and just disrespectful poor sportsmen in general.  It's no wonder hunters get such a bad name.

That's exactly what ruined it for me years ago. To much illegal and unethical crap goes on up there. Theres a lot of out of towners up there for me. No respect for anything or anyone.

Good luck on the cow tag. Every where up there is like a freshly swatted hornets nest.

Cows are a piece of cake to find.  I've not had any issues driving around and finding elk within a couple hours time whenever we've been up there.

That's what I hear... Looking to go out Thursday and friday before the weekend crazies come out again, if it's even worth it? Did you go in through the Malaga side in Colockum pass or Tarpiscan?

Yes, Malaga side.  Hard to say where everything scattered to after the weekend, but I have a pretty good hunch.  Good luck.

Weve been hunting in the naneum area for quite some years, always a s*** show of people, this year anytime a good burst of rain or any other weather came in some "hunters" down canyon from us were blasting off .223 and pistol rounds for the rest of the day like the start of WW3 was coming. just crazy to me, not to mention how many beer cans are all over the sides of the roads and even at the bases of trees where people were sitting a decent walk in on a trail. sucks to see our backyard treated that way by most likely out of towners.

This is the first year I've elk hunted in several years and am very thankful I did not have this experience. I wasn't around the roads much but I didn't hear any excessive (or any) shooting or find litter. Sad to hear this is happening in our forests.

Idk man it probably wasn't anymore then usual but it was just disappointing and I got on a rant there. Heading back up to camp to try and get another spike.

Another spike?  Not acusing you of killing two. Just assuming someone in your group got one?  My dad got up there tonight. A guy he talked to said that he knows/heard of 6 or 7 being taken. But my uncle hasnt seen an elk in 2 days. I always applaund the groups with a spike hanging, seems like the needle in the haystack. Good job if you guys pulled one out. Im getting excited for fridays cow opener
