I'm looking at getting some new glass. Really been eyeing the el series, but not sure. I was also looking at the slc series. Anyone know what the noticeable differences between the two series are? And have experience with both. Do you prefer one over the other or are the relatively the same. Reason I'm asking is I can either get one pair of the el range finders at this time(10x42) or I can get a set of slc 10x42 and 15x56 for almost the same price. Just seeing who has what and what you guys think. Thanks.

I've been running the slc 10x42 for about 10 years and love em, just upgraded to the hd's this year. Personally, I prefer the slc's because of the more compact size. The el ranges are a big set of binos

Look through them and decide. I use SLC 15x56 and a Nikon EDG 8x42 and am very happy with that combination.
For some people they experience what is known as Globe Effect with very flat field binoculars like the EL, the EDG is also a high end binocular that some people seem to experience this with. I don't have any problem with it. Some people do though.

I can only give my experience with the EL 10X42 and EL Range 10x42 and can say it is the best glass I have ever had. It is nice not having to carry a separate r/f so upgraded last year from the EL's to the EL Range and am glad I did.
Maybe send a PM to jjhunter, he has had it all and then some :chuckle:

I have the 10x50 slc great glass

I have used both. I had the 10x42 SLC for 6 to 8 years and the last 4 years I have used the Swarovison 12x50 EL. There is a large difference in clarity and light gathering ability. And definition at long range is better. The quality of the swarovision glass compared to the old swarobright glass was enough I sold both of my slc spotting scopes to get the new STX after using the new binos for a year. Both will do the job well. But If you are looking for the best of the best its the new swarovision EL series.
I'm not sure where you live but if your are this area we can go in the field and you can check them out. I think its hard to tell the amount of difference in a well lit store at short range.

Awesome, thanks for the replies so far guys!

Swarovski claims light transmission is very slightly greater in the SLC and this is due to the EL having field flattener lens elements the SLC does not have.
There in a discussion above, but there are other outstanding discussions on the bird forums. Time allowing I will try to dig those links up.

Have EL Swarovision 8.5x42 and they're fantastic. Don't look through Swaros unless you're going to buy them. I made that mistake and everything else I looked through just weren't good enough so finally gave in and bought them

Same with me

Love my EL 10x42 throw down the coin you won't be disappointed, and if you hunt around (even on here) you may find a used set for sale from somebody upgrading to the EL ranges

I would highly recommend that you not "throw down the coin" without comparing what you are purchasing side by side and being certain that you are getting the best return on investment for your particular circumstance.
There is a difference in these binoculars, and for me the globe effect isn't noticeable in any binocular. YMMV, and for some people it is distracting and they prefer the SLC that does not incorporate field flattener lens elements that the EL Swarovision and my Nikon EDG has.
The thing to remember is that you want to compare apples to apples and make the comparisons between the SLC Neu and not the older SLC that does not have the latest glass and coatings.

I own both slc 10x 50 and EL 10x 42. For me I can not really tell a difference but the old slc defiantly are better at last light. I thought the new ones would out perform the old slc just because they were 15 years newer and EL's not the case at all.

I have 10x32 EL's, 10x42 EL's, and 15x56 SLC. They are all great. When you are talking about glass that is this close in comparison nobody can make the decision for you. You need to compare them yourself.

There happens to be a pair of 10x50 doc in the classifieds for $1200. Good price and great binos
-
I'll add one more thing (and you may already do this) but regardless of what you go with, put em on a tri-pod to maximize their potential👍

I have the Swarovski 10 x 42 EL, The 15x 56 SLC and 2 pair of the Leica Geovid's. I like them all. The 15x56 Bino's need to be stabilized. Strong magnification for handheld. The Leica is much better for clarity and brightness as well as a built in range finder that goes to 2000 yds. I find myself and my brother using the Leica more than the Swarovski. Just saying

This is an absolute must when you are trying to decide betw the SLC or the EL. You may be one of the people that cannot pan with an EL or a Nikon EDG or other binocular that incorporates field flattener lenses in their design without feeling sea sick. It does not effect me in the least, but I have personal acquaintances who simply cannot use them without this being an issue.
I had it explained to me by one of them as something like someone who cilantro tastes like soap to trying to tell someone who is not effected what that is all about when they just don't experience it.

Thanks for the replies guys. Much appreciated. I ended up getting a set of els from a forum member, can't wait to put them to use. Amazing the clarity from my old set of beat up nikons. Again thanks.
