This isn't a story about a big buck, or big bull, it's a simple boring story about a small deer. My dad hasn't killed much in his life, infact he's never killed a bull elk. But this isn't about an elk, just a small deer. But I'll tell you what, I learned a lot today about hunting, all the years I've trophy hunted, today was a great day. My dad is 74 years old and has a bad heart, my time with him is really day by day, that's how I look at it. Today we hugged each other, gave a kiss on the cheek and really appreciated our time in the woods. Today was a good day. This was our 4th day on his any deer hunt for blacktail, he drew a doe tag. My brother took him 2 days and I took him the other 2 with no luck. Today we took a road that duckslayer had been seeing deer on the day before, it was good advice. Saw a topic the other day, is road hunting, hunting. Well when you can't hike very far, yes it is. Simple story, driving along and saw a deer, it just stood there while my dad got out of the truck. He set up on the sticks with my 25-06 and the deer moved taking away the good shot. I walk down the road and found the deer broadside at 40 yards, called my dad down to where I was. He set up, put the cross hairs behind the shoulder and pulled the trigger. I thought I recorded the entire process with my phone, but I had it on photo instead of video! 😡. Anyway, he made a good shot and we had the deer gutted and in the truck in no time. Simple hunt, small deer but big day for a my dad and I. Sorry only 1 pic but you can really see how happy he was!

That's awesome....thank you for sharing that story! Just as good of a read as a trophy buck....it's about time spent in the woods with family and friends....not always about the size of the animal..not to mention how great that doe will taste

Thanks for the big storey about a big hunt with your dad, and that deer is gonna bring big smiles during ever meal it makes. That's a trophy that's will be remembered for years to come.
I still remember the last time my dad and I spent time in the woods while I was grouse hunting.

Boss, I sure hope this isn't our last hunt, but we talked about that. Almost brought me to tears, we are heading to Idaho in a couple weeks for late whitetail. I'm definitely very happy to have this time with him. Thanks guys

This is what hunting is all about. And good eating around the table with family and friends! Good job!

Cherrish these moments....to me, this story is what hunting really is. Big antlers are great....but memories with loved ones (family and friends) is what it is all about. I hunted with my dad for the last time about 5 years ago. I had a chance to harvest a doe in early Sept. with him by my side. I passed because it was early in the season and I didn't want to kill a doe. To this day I regret passing on that deer....It would be the last hunt before he passed away.
Glad you got to spend a great hunt with your dad and hope you have many more. His smile and your write up prove to me that this was one heck of a trophy hunt.

Sounds like an awesome day man. Great memories with your Dad. I told myself riding out the other day at dark in Hancock, that any deer taken up there is a trophy. Glad it worked out

 heck ya!
I try and take my dad out for a doe each year! I buy him his tag and a coffee and we hang out in the farm field and wait for a doe. One of my favorite days hunting each fall!

I was saying all weekend. I am fine with a doe. Just.got lucky and the first deer to offer a shot was a spike.
Good eats for sure. Seeing my son's smile is always worth more than a huge rack.
Congrats
