Title: 101 Late
Post by: Camo on November 01, 2016, 05:30:29 PM
Hey all, been awhile since I've hunted the unit. Feels like there is a lot of cameras, stands, and feed piles around. With last years fire, is the bulk of the pressure on the unburnt ground or is there still decent cover to hold whitetail in the burn. Appears that the burn covers a lot of country East of Republic and North of 20? Thanks for any thoughts.

Heard that too. Would be nice to leave camp up for a couple weeks but that's not going to happen.

Not a whole lot of help, but... Took the oldest boy up towards storm king on opening morning of rifle season. We hiked a ridge for a couple hours. Saw a big Mulie, didn't get a count on points, but the rack was well past it's ears. It was about 200 yds and running. Also saw a basket rack 3 pt whitetail and several white tail does. Heard LOTS of shots. There were too many people for my liking though. Seemed like everywhere we turned there was someone in the distance. We hunted 205 in the evening and he got himself a little 2x3 Mulie.

We went out this last weekend. We only seen does, save for the little 3 point in my yard. Lots of big tracks in the snow (including wolf tracks). Doesn't appear that they're ready to rut yet. It's a little warm. Temps are dropping this week though and I'll be hunting all this weekend and all next week. Good luck all.

Fawns are already back with does in the 101, high and low.

We were on the 101 204 line, does with fawns, saw over 40 does and only 2 bucks. Took 2 does.

That's likely what we'll be doing to. Except, we don't kill does with fawns. The kids already filled their tags during modern and late modern. I've been holding till now. Time to put more meat in the freezer.

Yeah, the 2 we took were all alone and a day apart. Watched each of them for a while to be sure. we saw several does with multiple fawns. 1 doe had 3 fawns with her, a couple times we saw 6 and 8 at a time. Both bucks we saw were all alone as well.

To follow up, I scouted the 13th-16th. Walked up on a solid 3x within bow range, how often does that happen? Good thing I was scouting and the bow was in the truck! Decided to attempt a hunt on him the next morning. Went in late to account for thermals but it didn't matter. Blowing snow and rain threw up the ground blind instead of the climber and apparently rattled in a deer from behind? Tracks were in mine and came within 20 yards of blind! Went home for 2 days then hunted 19- AM 23rd. First day 3x4 came by at 70 yards, couldn't coax him closer. Went up the ridge behind me and sounded like he got on a hot doe? Day 2 moved stand 40 yards, live decoy came into 10 yards and hung out for 2 hours but got no interest. Day 3 & 4 was everything but whitey bucks. Last morning I had until 10 to hunt so got lazy and jumped back in the ground blind I had left up. The weight of the snow on the roof forced me to move my bow to a makeshift hook on the side of the blind. As luck would have it, 4x comes in from behind, shows at 10 yards,(I can't move) walks within 6, then steps behind blind and gone. Had pics of 5 bucks on 2 different cams, 3 during daylight. 1 dink 3x, 3 average bucks, and 1 solid buck. Seen a handful of bucks off the road scouting and getting in and out of hunting areas. In my limited time and experience, I felt some bucks were moving rather well?
