Title: Hunt dog with cut toe?
Post by: Backstrap on November 02, 2016, 07:39:39 PM: My spaniel has a cut on the top of his toe, approx 1/2 inch long by 3/16 inch wide and 3/16 deep. Isn't bleeding, and doesn't look infected. He's not favoring it and it doesn't affect his motion, but he is licking it a lot. Is he good to hunt or should I wait for it to heal over? He's a very high energy dog that moves non stop in the field.

Post by: Colin on November 02, 2016, 07:44:15 PM: I'd wait. I'd also get him to stop licking it. If it was my dog I'd take him to the vet also.

I have "no chew" sports wrap that I put over things like that to help keep it clean and also prevent them from licking it raw. I don't leave them unattended with it on so it doesn't end up being a bowel blockage.

If you refuse to go to the vet I'd clean it with hydrogen peroxide and then super glue it shut and wrap over night. First sign or infection I'd be to the vet asap.

Post by: wildweeds on November 02, 2016, 09:41:43 PM: Dogs have very clean mouths, licking promotes healing and keeps it clean. No pictures supplied but the description tells me I would hunt him. I've got some crap for healing all things foot related called pad heal from a coon dog supply outfit. Smells like turpentine and works miracles overnight.

Post by: Old Dog on November 02, 2016, 10:34:34 PM: Hunting dogs are really tough, and sometime they need us to decide if they are hurt. Last year I aborted a trip in SD, because Jasmine cut her foot. I have since learned about a product from 3M called vetrap. Without a picture I hesitate to offer this advice, but it sounds like if you use neopsorin, guase, and vetrap you could hunt your pup for a day. It will also help with healing to that combination daily. :twocents:

Post by: JLS on November 02, 2016, 11:10:35 PM: Don't use peroxide on cuts, it damages tissue. Use betadine to clean wounds.

As for hunting, hard to tell just from a description. I run my dog pretty hard, but I'm a little conservative on injuries.

Post by: ForestDump on November 03, 2016, 06:54:37 AM: Doesn't sound too bad. I'd clean it after the hunt and monitor it. The only thing is you don't want the dog aggravating it and making it worse by licking. If you want you could put a small child's sock on the foot and duct tape it.

Vetercyn like everyone else mention, and I also wrap his feet with vet wrap before hunting him. Sunday he kicked out of the vet wrap and that's the pad mine ripped up

They make a gel too. which works well on wounds.

Find it at farm supply type stores. Coastal etc.

Post by: Ruger on November 04, 2016, 06:37:42 AM: I have a Dog first aid kit and in it have EMT Gel which works really good for stuff like this.... Clean it out put some of this on it and it protects it and heals it....
