Title: Who's Rattling Whitetails? 2016
Post by: 3nails on November 03, 2016, 04:47:25 PM
I am!!! Totally getting stoked to rattle mountain timber bucks! This year I will be in western Montana hitting it hard. This is, imo, the most exciting deer hunting method. Nothing like having a monster buck crashing through the woods looking for a fight! I will have cell reception at my cabin this year (I didn't have it in Idaho last year) and will gladly trade numbers with anyone to share info during the season.
So who else is rattling this year?  I will update my success/failure on this thread as my hunt progresses.

Make sure it's a toned down rattle session. Nothing too aggressive this early. No "can" either. I've "rubbed" in bucks early in the year also. Find a rub line and rub hard on one he's already made. Do it on a tree nearest the brushiest area. What unit?

I was told to use a can call by someone else  :chuckle: I'll go with out .....I think that was part of my problem I was in too open of areas...I wasn't in the brushy stuff.....I'll be in elk city...just outside graingeville...so basically just going them together or light rattling?

You'll be very pre-rut so imagine what it looks and sounds like with posture sparring. Just coming together and lightly shoving each other around. I can't imagine they'd move too far away from their bedding areas this early so sneak in close to those benches off the main ridges. They love to bed on the knobs of finger ridges. Personally I'd leave the can at home this early.

Things should be ramping up pretty good by then as far as buck aggression goes.

Just out of curiosity 3nails when do you think the prime time for rattling is?  I would like to get a hunt in over the four day thanksgiving weekend in unit 5.  I was considering throwing some antlers in the pack, and giving it a try.  I am still in holding mode to see if I have my hunting partner can make it if not I may have to just eat my Idaho deer tag.

If I had to pick 3 days to rattle it would be the 17th-19th. 3 days before that and a week after are still in the zone though.

Your enthusiasm is contagious, 3nails! I will be slipping across the state line to Idaho on Sunday afternoon. I intend to do some very light spar-rattling. Early in the week of Thanksgiving break is going to be full action rattle time for me, though!

I have a late buck deer tag (whitetail tag) with a November 1-20 season. I was at your class at Bloedel and am going to give it a try for sure. With my work schedule I have a 4 day and 3 day hunt planned... I'll be hunting the 8th-11th and the 15th-17th if need be. Should be fun!

Sure can!  Just don't be as aggressive as you would with whitetails.  I rattled up a 2 point blacktail within 15 feet of me on Monday.  He came in on a dead run in thick timber.  I've killed several blacktail bucks while rattling and calling.  Taught a guy that I use to work with how to call and rattle.  He wound up killing a blacktail buck that he had been after for 4 years.  He has killed several really nice bucks doing the same since.  The daughter and I are going to give it a try again tomorrow haven't found the right one to shoot yet.

I'll be hitting it hard in NW Montana, rattled in a couple young bucks this week already. Scrapes are just getting hit the last 5 days in the area I'm hunting.
This crazy wet beginning of the season and now warm weather is unusual.

My 10 year old son will be a shooter this year for the first time. I'm super jacked to get him a mature buck rattled in.

Should be Awesome.

20 min. minimum. Up to 30 if you feel like the sound carried well. Too many times have I stood up to move and have one blow up right behind me or just barely out of sight. It's amazing how sometimes they'll slip in undetected.

Heading east in a week and a half to hunt whitetail for the first time.

There's just no way with a bag to create the volume needed in the mountains. I'm sure you could find a nice set of sheds for sale online.
I learned very quickly that the majority of rattling done on TV shows is pure garbage. Especially rattle bags.

Does the size of the antlers matter? I have some blacktail ones I could use, but they are just small 2 and 3 points...

I have always used real shed antlers. A couple of weeks ago I had my wife pick me up a Primos rattlin bag because packing real antlers can be a pain in the butt (literally and figuratively).  Let's just say that it was sent back to the store. Holy crap what a pile of junk. They sound exactly like what they are made of and nothing like real antlers. What a joke!  I will be packing real antlers from now on.

Open your video with photo gallery on your laptop maybe, not the video option. Then you can just thumb through the videos with the arrows on your keyboard. Also, if you want to post those videos on FB and want them to be clear, just instant message the videos to yourself on FB messenger. You can then save those videos off of messenger onto your phone and either post the videos on your FB page or just have them on your phone. Get all that haha

Ugh. I just accidentally deleted someones PM and I don't know who it was. I believe the question was whether to use synthetics or pull a set out of the rafters and use them? I would absolutely pull the ones out of the rafters! First of all the rafters are a lonely place for antlers.  :chuckle:  Also, it's pretty cool to kill a deer from antlers off another one you killed!  :IBCOOL:

Do you need to call or is rattling antlers enough to bring them in.
I use a call (can or grunt tube) before I rattle in case something is close. That sound won't travel far so if nothing responds in 3-5 minutes I'll go to the antlers. A good sequence with the can and tube is to bleat and "chase grunt" and pound the backs of the main beams on the ground to simulate hoofs hitting dirt like a buck chasing a doe.

If they were that important, they wouldn't be in the rafters now would they?  :)

Cut 'em up.  They aren't doing squat in the rafters but collecting dust.

I preffer not to rattle because I hunt public land and everyone seem to try it. I like to spot and stalk, moving very slowly. I do however bring a bleat call and a grunt call with me and will let a call or two out every 1.5 hours or so to stir things up. I have only had success rattling on private land where bucks weren't heavily hunted. Good luck to everyone, TIME TO FILL THE DEER TAG!😀💥🔫

This is what I did today...I only had 5-10yd visibility and no luck what so ever....I did find an old grade that went into a nice bench but wasn't far off the road and I lost count at 16 scrapes....it's open timber though and I tried rattling in there with no luck either

This could be a stupid question but does it make a difference using a set of mulie antlers to rattle for whitetails?

Perfect, I was looking through my bin of loose antlers and found a cool mulie set that has some kickers so it gives good sound

I am hunting my late whitetail draw tag here in the Blues.  Will be doing some rattling.  Haven't had much luck with it since I was a teenager, but honestly I don't do a lot of whitetail hunting.  Took a while to draw this tag...

I went out for the afternoon hunt in adjacent Idaho. Set up at the head of a small brush-and-timber gully and rattled every 20 minutes.  At 4:15 PM, had a big-bodied buck run in towards me at about 60 yards distance, but I did not get a good look at the antlers due to the brush and his speed.  He disappeared into a small, dense stand of Douglas-fir and grand fir to my right, and never emerged.

If I had set up in a portable tree stand, I would have had a good view above the brush, and it might have been a different story!  At any rate, this guy ran right in towards the sound of the antlers.

Yesterday being the last day of modern, fog set in hard so i rattled.  I thought id take any buck just to get meat in my freezer, but a dink little 3x3 wt came in to my rattling, to 20-30 yards, and i just couldnt shoot him.  Felt sorry for his dumb azz.  Ended up shooting a hog at the buzzer, started following the blood trail right before dark, jumped him out of bed so i pulled out.  Went back this morning and all the snow is gone and i cant find him.  Hating life right now.  Shoulda shot the dink.  Or stayed home and shot the 4x5 that i got video of working a scrape in my back yard during daylight yesterdsy morning.  Guess ill be spending a few days up high watching for scavenger birds.   :bash:

I posted my Idaho whitetail buck story  in a separate thread. But to make a long story short, I used some of 3nails advice on aggressive rattling, and it really worked!  Had the biggest buck of my life come in to eight yards.  I had hauled in a portable tree stand, and climbed about 20 feet above the ground.  He never saw me, and the wind was in my favor.

I got in there around 2:15 pm, and was set up with rifle ready by 2:30 pm (end of shooting light was 4:30 pm).  I grunted here and there, but rattled about every half hour.  The last rattling set, though, I really went at it for about two minutes.  Lots of hard hits (swinging the antlers at each other) interspersed with "grinding and mashing" (antlers in contact with each other).  I also reached up high above me from the stand to scrape branches and the trunk of the tree occasionally.

Good luck to all of you with late season Washington or Idaho whitetail tags!
