I am having really bad problems with my Remington 870 supermagnum express. I bought this gun last year during a Black Friday sale so i could use it for duck hunting the following year. Last week and this week when I was duck hunting the gun could not load 3 inch shells into the chamber. I load the shells into the magazine and when I pump the shotgun it gets jammed and is not able to go into the chamber. I have tried 4 different brands of 3 inch shells including, hevi steel, hevi metal, Kent, and black cloud. Every single shell gets jammed when I try to pump the shotgun. For deer season a couple weekends ago I also used 3 inch federal slugs and they also jammed. I have used 2,3/4 shells and they seem to work fine. Occasionally they fail to eject from the chamber. I'm pretty disappointed with my gun right now and could use some help. It's really frustrating when my gun jams when I'm trying to hunt ducks. It's not the shells because my friends all use benelli shotguns and the shells do not jam in their gun. Thinking about just getting rid of the gun because it's not even worth selling at half price
-
Have you contacted Remington? That would be my first move if it were my gun. No sense in getting rid of it, it's probably an easy fix.
-
Another weird type of jam. Yesterday when I had a shell in the chamber had a duck fly right it front of me landing with my decoys and when I went to pull the trigger nothing happened. The shell wasn't even in the barrel all the way like in this picture but the slide was all the way forward
-
I've emailed Remington but will miss my entire duck season if I send the gun in for 2 months. That's why I'm thinking about just buying a new benelli. This gun has been just problems since day one with shotgun shells
-
So the slide was locked forward, but the bolt wasn't closed and engaged?
-
I had the same problems. I ended up throwing it in the river while on a goose hunt. Went and bought benelli nova and never looked back.
-
Heard of lots of problems with the newer production 870s which sucks because the old guns were amazing. I will never get rid of mine......but it is 30 years old. I would look at getting a benelli.

This is classic.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's what happened. I then tried super hard to eject the shell and it took awhile and then went to cycle a new shell into the chamber and it jammed of course
-
Where can I sell this Remington? I'd like to at least get $100 back from this thing
-
I'll give you $100 for it if I don't have to drive far. What's your location?
-
$101.
-
$105, seller drives.
-
I have heard that the new 870 SuperMags were having issues. Sorry man... Ill give you $106 and a MAGA hat
-
I have an 11-87 that I bought from a member on here. (Stated no issues) that did this a lot. I took it apart and polished all the moving parts and it now functions flawlessly.
-
I've actually heard the same thing about a full break down and polish. might be worth a few weeknights to try to salvage it :twocents:
-
$112
-
$112
I have you Trumped with the MAGA hat ;)

That's pretty funny because I was going to raise the bid by going $106 and saying he didn't need to take the MAGA hat off your hands, :chuckle:

870s are great as long as they are clean and dry - not so awesome for western wa this time of year. My 1998 870 jams all the time when it gets wet or the smallest amount of dirt or grass anywhere near it.

Must be the newer guns, my 1963 still works great, rain, shine, mud, saltwater or snow.....
Why not get the new gun, then send the 870 in for service?

Agree with lokidog, my wingmaster took everything in stride temps I n the teens, mud sand. Only thing it would not cycle was Winchester XXX shells.
Hold Remington to the fire and test out Benelli.

It is an interesting issue.....
My three sons all shhot 870 ultramags. No such issues.
Sorry you're experiencing this
It sux to get a new piece of gear and have it not perform.
-
I looked at 1 of the kids 870's new this year and the slide was already worn out maybe 100 rounds threw it.like said i would buy the Nova then send this 1 to Rem. to get fixed. :twocents:

That's crazy for the slide to wear out that fast!!!
My sons all have many hundreds to over a thousand rounds apiece thru them with no such issues...... knock on wood!
-
the metal the slide was made of seems very soft to me.
-
it was not latching on and locking.just like the op's
-
Had the same shooting 3-1/2" shells. Chamber was rough. Took a chamber brush in a drill with 00 steel wool and gun oil. Polished chamber and where rim of shell sits in barrel. Machine marks left from factory was crabbing the rim after firing do to expansion. Also changed out magazine follower to an aluminum one and the away the plastic factory one. It solve the problem.
-
Supermags... always had the impression this has been a issue from the start. More than a couple guys I knew had this issue when they first came out.
-
Man, after reading all of this, I feel really fortunate that my sons all have working Ultramags.......
I'd be really torqued if I experienced what the OP was showing.
-
From what I have seen of them... I wouldn't give you a six pack of beer and a roll of duct tape for one.
-
No reason why a pump should have to be clean and dry. My supernova has been covered in ice and sand. Never had a single issue. Go supernova!

:yeah:
I bought my 870 at coast to coast for $189 bucks in the early 80s
great gun !
too bad 4 U
-
Picked up a nova today. Cycles 3 inch shells so smoothly no jamming at all
-
Good choice I'll have my nova till I die
-
Could it be that the chamber is not bored to the correct length listed on the barrel? Kinda looks like that in the second pic :dunno:

I have done something very similar on ALL my shotguns. I take a scotch Brite pad and cut it so that a step will go in my shot gun patch Rod. Usually 3/4"x3" or so. I ad some atf to the pad and insert it to the barrel and chamber chuck it up on my eletric drill and honestly the piss out of it. Works great for debugging and polishing. Had made all my guns shoot better.
-
Irony alert!!!!!
I stated earlier that all three of my boys shoot 870 Ultramags with no issues. That was true....... until this morning's hunt
My son jammed ealr in the hunt and I can't unjam it for anything.
I can't get the barrel off because you need it mid-pump to sliode the barrel off and it is jammed closed on an empty.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

:chuckle: how many have seen chokes stuck in these p.o.s shotguns?soft metal entire firearm.
-
:) I have two 870's, neither are Express models, both are SPS 3.5 inch models. Flawless since new 100's of rounds and rough use. Have an old 870 Wingmaster Flawless for 35 years.

Do you use lube on the choke tube threads? If you don't remove choke once in a while and clean threads plus lube them before but installation of choke tube they will get stuck. It is part of cleaning that you should do. More time then once I had to re tighten choke tube between a few shots.
-
I do yes.My kids friends have brought 2 over that had chokes stuck and the 1 that the slide got chewed up.to soft.

UPDATE:
I found a very good youtube video that showed the problem and how to correct it.
It seems that machining marks left in the breech is a common culprit for jams in these 870s (seems like simple quality control failure at Remington to me, but......)
Anyway, I machined all of ours dwon and polished them. Much much smoother.
Going goose hunting in the AM. I'm thinknking my son's 870 won't jam anymore (pleeeeeeeeeze).
To the OP, I like that Nova......
-
Hopefully it works for you. :yeah:
-
It better!!!!!
I can't afford 3 new Nova's!!!!!!

remember the link to that video ?

I used to own the same gun. I had the problem of the shell Getting stuck and I couldn't pull the pump back. Send it back to Remington, the wait won't be that long and then you're gun will work just fine. It won't cost any $.

@cumminsbassguy
I used this one because the guy explained the issue and then showed exactly how to do it.
UPDATE: ALL of my sons 3 870's now shoot smoothly, and jam free (including plenty of 3 1/2" mags)
P.S. All three of my son's 870's had these machining marks. I guess it's a QA issue for them. I could feel them with my fingernail more easily than I could see them.
-
When they are jammed, hold the fore stock very tight and slam the butt on a log or rock. I'm going to try the polish thing as well, it makes sense as after I clean the bore I can get a few shots before jamming.

I've owned 8 or 10 870's all but one jammed, that one was an early Wingmaster. They have all been traded off for something better. I'm now shooting a Beretta or a Baikal, the Russian is my salt water gun. I still have a few pump guns just for fun, a Winchester Model 12 (Trap), Sears (Winchester) and a BPS. I use the BPS for Sporting Clays pup gun events.
