Title: maggot like worms on mallard

Had a biologists tell us to watch for these on mallards and notify her if we see them was just wondering if anyone has seen these  things  she said they where just under the feathers next to the skin they are suppose to look like a maggot type worm    grosss!!!!!!!!!!

Google "Sarcocystis" or Rice Breast Disease  :yike:

we didn't open up the one we had but know I'm going to these were actually on the top of the head and chest and they looked like a small skinny grub.

I've seen lice and rice breast, but never some kind of larvae. I'd still eat the bird, if it is a parasite, it is just a skin/feather one and not going to effect the meat.

I think the grubs in the picture are on top of the skin rather than in the meat like "rice breast".

A biologist told you to look out for them but didn't tell you what they were or anything more?

Could the organism be something that attached itself to the duck while it was sitting in the water somewhere? The type of water the duck had been using could give ya a clue.
Google search of aquatic insect larva shows a few that are very close to what you've got in hand.
