Title: Bear Hunter's 2016/17 Season
Post by: bear hunter on December 11, 2016, 07:54:53 PM
This is my 2nd season. Learned alot since my first set back in Dec. 2015. Sarted out good with 3 Beaver in one week. Pulled the traps because Elk season. Checked my spots today. Beaver moved in and fixed the dam. I set one in my hot spot. Then Devin and I went to my lucky spot. Placed one in there and one down the the creek. The last trap is a Kirk's design power guillotine door trap. Placed that on dam. It is a crazy looking one. Single door and the trigger is mounted at the bottom back of the trap horizontal. Works good if placed in the dam break with metal plate installed at the bottom. Then place wire door at the top. Water flows over the wire triggers and current and leafs don't set it off. Beaver swims in to patch the dam and slam the doors shut. At least I think thats what will happen. Lol  hear are the 3 I trapped 4 weeks ago. The pictures are in order. The last one was Devin taking a selfie with me soaked. Yes I know I need waders. Lol I'm still cold and its been 5 hours since I jumped in to set my traps. Well I will fill you in tomorrow after I check the traps. I think I am going to place 4 cat traps Wednesday and 1 or 2 ever other day. Going to try and get 15 to 20 cat traps out this season. I hope I can keep up the energy.

:'( Should of just placed both traps side by side.  :bash:  I missed out on a beaver to today. Well I tried being smart and moved one of the trap. I placed it down from the dam. Bad move he came in and pulled all the guide, and dive sticks on the left side of the trap. Then fixed the dam is and he left a nice opening by the trap. Funny thing is most of the dive sticks by the trap are still there. Hmmmmm very smart beaver. I hope he is not the one I could'nt catch last season. He was pissing me off. Setting traps off and making them apart of the dam.  :dunno: So I moved the other trap back and forward of the other one to block the hole channel. The one trap acts like a guide to the one trap. Well will see if this works. I also place a trail cam to see if he is a old smart beaver. Lol

Well this week was slow. Had one smart beaver around the traps 2 days ago and nothing yesterday. Today was a good day. First check I had a 60+ pounder. My biggest one to date. Checked the other 3 that are in the woods and nothing. Hmmmmmm it is just going to take time to out smart this old fart it the woods. But I will get him.  :archery_smiley: :mgun: Even if I have to  :cmp1: out for him. Lol trying this trap on the dam. Nothing for aweek and there are some smart beavers in this pond. Caught him last season in a Koro (hancock) trap. He busted out and stretched the fencing bad. He must be a big old guy.

I just place 3 cat traps out today. Only thing that bugs me is hound hunters driving by as I set my cat trap. Hmmmmmmmm The 2 hounds were sitting on top of there box barking up a storm. As I drove down the road I could see in the snow hound and boot prints. Do hound hunter really hunt coons at 1pm or mostly at night. I can see coon hunting at night. I think they were looking for cat tracks in the snow. Hope the hound don't find my sets

Well the week was slow.  :'( but Today was a good day.   :mgun:  :llam:  :whoo:  :4w: 2 cats out of 5 traps. First trap looks like a cat got away. 2nd and 3rd had a cat inside. 4th and 5th trap. A bear ran off with the 4th one. Found it 50 yards away. The 5th one I drove a land anchor into a root and lock it. ( Well it turns out I caught a pet dog with the 5th one. The ower got the dog out she was ok. I reset all traps with little to no bait left just bones and feathers. Crossing my fingers.

Nothing today in the cat sets. Checked the 1 land beaver set and nothing. I will check the swim thru's after 72 hours. Trying to let beaver spots rest. Those smart beaver know when I am there. Lol smart suckers. I was able to get 3 more cat sets out today. Thats 8 on my trap line. I don't like the snow. You can see ever spot I stop at and walk i to. Sticks out big time. At least it was still snowing after I was done. It helps cover my trails. I placed most of my traps so I can check them on the drive. with binos.

Well started out good. First check and I had a nice beaver. Checked my cat traps and all empty. Seen 4 otters in a pond down from my swim thrus. So i placed fish, shell fish oil on a log in front of my sets. plus a chunk of otter gland. Pulled the dam set and placed my Bailey there. Took the guiltine trap that was on the dam and placed it down streem from the otters. Did water/land set. Happen to have a can of sardines and otter lure. Crossing my fingers......😊  as I was finishing up. I could hear some one talking. Hmmmmm I walk out and drove down the road. Dang it not again.😠  The guy walking his dogs back home. :bash:  Crap I am a mile from this guys house. Talked to him and I caught his dog again. The one from last season. Plus caught his other dog Wednesday night after I check the traps. So that trap was the guy rolled over not a bear. Lol So I pull the cat trap but left the otter set. Tomorrow I will set 2 swim thru trap there in the creek.

These pictures show my sets in a channel I have been trapping. The first 2 pictures are the same set.  I have been using this spot for 2 seasons now. I have caught taken 4 beaver, and 3 muskrat here. I also found a nice log that blocks the channel. I noticed that the beavers are diving under it and I can see a trail in the mud.  :IBCOOL: A sweat trapping spot. So tomorrow I will place a Swim thru there as well. This set is up from the dam in the first picture. I'm hoping to be luck a get a otter her. I know they are around this area. I hope you like the pictures and good luck trapping.

P.S--- The yellow line box is my trap
The orange lines are the beaver route

any feed store type place should have syringes for livestock.  Go with the big ones, once you have them calm, skunks don't seem to care about needles or how big the needle is.

I am chasing a skunk myself. Since we are talking about dispatch methods, can I hear any of the ethics of the needle vs bullet? Acetone to the bloodstream sounds like it would create a blood pressure drop similar to some serious bleeding.

Never used the skunk pole method myself. I have doubts about it working well on civets. I will say a lot of guys use them on striped skunks and they seem to die fast or so they say. I have read where MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) is supposed to work extremely fast, better then acetone.

Are you asking about syringes for dispatching skunks or for harvesting the essence? The ones for harvesting the essence are at the farm supply I believe but you would likely have to get he whole kit for dispatching from a trapper supply.

You can build the dispatch pole yourself. I bought the big seringe about 1" around and a stick of 1" conduit with the bell end. The plunger fits very tight in the bell end. I trimmed about an inch off the bell and stuck the plunger end inside. Works great but you need to have a hole cut in the trap so the pole and seringe will fit threw. Cost was about $5 total

Both Bruce... I was just milking it in a jar, but I think a syringe might work better. Plus I was thinking it would be hard to chase the little stinkers around my big cat traps. I was thinking the same think that most of the other trapper are going after strippers. How would you get one out of a big trap to a small trap and gas them? I was thinking of welding up a cover to place over a trap. But it needs to be small.  Or I could cut a 3x4 hole in the side and wire a cover. Then cut the wire to open the hole. Then wait and see if the skunk enters small trap or gas box. Whats you thoughts on this?

I am chasing a skunk myself. Since we are talking about dispatch methods, can I hear any of the ethics of the needle vs bullet? Acetone to the bloodstream sounds like it would create a blood pressure drop similar to some serious bleeding.

Never used the skunk pole method myself. I have doubts about it working well on civets. I will say a lot of guys use them on striped skunks and they seem to die fast or so they say. I have read where MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) is supposed to work extremely fast, better then acetone.
It was slow but it is starting to pick up. I noticed when it snows and gets frozen. I don't caught anything. But as some as everthing melts away. I caught critters. Hmmmmmm Well today I caught a small beaver in the picture I drew on the other day. I tried a swim thru in a new spot and caught a big otter.  :IBCOOL:  I need to get syringes for spotted skunk. I popped him not good. Lol  :puke: Where do you get doctor syringes to use on skunks?
Are you asking about syringes for dispatching skunks or for harvesting the essence? The ones for harvesting the essence are at the farm supply I believe but you would likely have to get he whole kit for dispatching from a trapper supply.

What  I do is I purposely make a small hole in the trap for civets to escape and then set a small trap beside the cat trap and pick the civet up next time around. My small traps, I can gas them right in the trap but you can use a small cage/box trap that will fit in a gas chamber and then set the trap in the gas chamber.
Sunnyslopes went out with me a couple years ago and he had some cages he wanted to use. We found and old cooler someone had tossed and used that for a gas chamber. He gassed three that day and it worked pretty good.
Oh, a 2x2 hole in your trap will let every civet escape. Can't hold them with bar doors either.

Thanks Bruce for the info. I will make a gas box at work. To fit my smaller traps. I had 2 skunks in my cat traps tonight. They walk out the bar door. Looks like I will be making lots of little skunk traps for next season. I will brake up galv. Boxes and us wire trigers like the swim thru's. I thinks 10 should do it. Lol in the mean time I will bait up some smaller havaharts and cross my finger for a cat or skunk. Thanks again for the info. Scored a syringe and 16ga niddles from a buddy. Now I can pull out the stink and save it.

Just a heads up on the small havaheart traps. Last year I was dealing with a skunk that was robbing me. I placed my small havaheart trap next to the cat trap and wired the bait to the roof of the trap like I do with my cat traps. Well I kept getting my bait robbed out of the traps. I figured out that with the pan trigger in the havaheart traps and the bait wired up high the skunk wasn't pushing down on the pan because he was sitting on his back legs stealing the bait. The last time I rebaited I wired the bait to the floor of the trap right behind the pan. That way when he pulled on the bait he is putting more downward pressure with his front feet. That did the trick and I caught my first skunk. Got sprayed in the process of trying to dispatch by moving the trap to a stream. So there were a couple lessons learned, and now the girlfriend won't let me bring skunks home anymore.

:yike:  2 cat trap doors shut.  :bash: :bash: Dang Skunk. I will just deal with them for now until Saturday. I will place havahart trap by my cat sets. Later I will place wire on doors to a keep the stinkers in the trap. Caught a beaver at the new spot I showed you guys on the picture. The natural log in the water. So now there is one down below and above the dam. Both channels covered now. I also caught a possum today. Lots of cat bait this year. Hmmmmm haven't had any muskrat this year. Heck I don't need them anyways. Well thanks for you time following my trap line. Here is a picture of my off the road otter set.

Another good day. No bobcats but I did get 2-beavers, 1-otter, and 2-possums. I fixed and rebaitedand scented the traps. I also placed 3 small traps for skunks next to my cat sets. Then placed 2- 11x12x36 traps down the road from all my sets. Also hung 2 animals in a tree 50 to 100 yards between my sets. Hoping it will draw in cats. Will see if it works. Pulled one the small swim thru for repairs.  I will thinking I should a new line. Never prebaiting before but with all the bait I hae might as well try a new spot next weekend. I have 3 traps ready and I will place out in a new area and start pebaiting. Will see if I have time.

:yike: Saw there was a cat on the road above my set. Everthing is frozen and the scent isn't getting out that good. I pulled one of my cat traps and placed it next the the meat I had by the road the cat ate. Removed the meat and added to the trap two had fulls of fleshing scraps. Smells and looks nasty. Place some scraps in thd lower trap to and rescented. Crossing my fingers he will bsitting and waiting for me. I also add turkey feather in and around the trap.

Well it has been 12 days of no critters in my traps. I had 2 misses and 2 drive bys. A couple of weeks ago I decided to hang a beaver in a tree between my traps. The traps are about 80 to 100 yards up and down the road. I figured it would draw in the cat that has been going up and down the road. He passed by my traps as he traveled up and down the road. I seen his tracks but could'nt get him to visit my traps. So I hung the beaver up in a tree and let him feed on it. It seemed to work. He got the taste of the fresh bloody beaver meat and wanted more. Well you guest it he went in my trap today. The grouse wings and fresh fleshed beaver meat/fat must of smelled good. Not a happy camp.

Well the new little trap works great. Caught a nice stinker in it. Nice close up picture. The other skunk almost sprayed me. I walked up to the trap and didn't see anything. Dropped to my knees and looked thru the side.  :yike: All I seen was a big tail poping up in my face. I jumped back and the little stinker ran and hid behind a fern fron. Wow that was a close one. Put him down and moved on. No pictures of that one yet.  Also had a nice big tom hitting the bait. Great tail cam pic's of him and a Opossum but some how I deleted them  :bash: :bash:  and to top it off the door was shut on my cat trap 30 yards from the bait. Dang skunks. I can see the skunk must of ate good and the cat pulled all the brush off the trap.  :bash: I pulled the bait off the tree and made a drag to the trap. Also pulled off the last leg and put it in the trap. Resented and baited trap. Rehung the spine, pelvic and sented just like I did in my trap. Crossing my fingers he will return tonight. Going to my the other set tomorrow and get 1 more up there.  The last picture is my otter set.  :bash: forgot to move back the safety's and might of missed a Otter. 1 door up and the other 1 down.  :bash: dang rookie  :chuckle:
As I was leaving the trap just stuck out. So I push swamp brush in the mud in front of my trap. Now it is well hidden. I hope lol

Today was good. No cats but he did come in and hit the bait site. I placed one more trap next to the bait site. Removed the bait and rescented the other traps to. Placed trail cam SD card back and aimed it at the trap. Crossing my fingers....    checked the other set and the door is shut again. WOW another Skunk in my cat trap... I don't know if I should be happy or sad. Lol :yike: :bash: :IBCOOL: :chuckle: but fur is fur and i need free skunk oil for bait making... I also moved 1 swim thru back to my luck spot. The beaver is leave out the back door and I need to cover both sides. I was lucky I had my shotgun in the truck. 2 malards landed in the field. I checked the trap and walk to the truck to get my gun. It payed off with a bonus green head to the pot. Good day for sure.

I placed a new trap by the bait site 30 yards from my first set.  The cat know about that trap already. Well the cat came in and took the door bait and hung around the new set for 7 min's. Nothing today but a Opossum that I released. Pulled that trap and rebaited. As I drove out I spotted a deer bone pile. Looks like lots of critters feeding on the meat and bones. So I put a trap 20 yards from the bones. Hoping a cat is hitting the pile.

Probably for sure there is a cat working those bones, a civet cat. :chuckle:

I was holding bloody shoulder from a beaver.  :chuckle: They just said instering and drove away. I just smiled and said have a good day. :dunno:

We have better looking Opossum than that up here in Skagit county, maybe you should run a Opossum line up here for a week or two.
I will tell you where all the hot spots are and where I would like them thinned out.
You should have no problem catching enough to make a nice King size blanket.

Let me know if you're interested. :)

Well it has been slow. So I started to pull my cat traps and move swim thrus. Truck is full of traps and ran out of room in back so 2 traps are in the cab. Lol caught 1 otter in the spot the another 3 came from. So I pulled the trap to leave some for next season. Also caught a nice beaver in my baily trap off the pond dam. That beaver has broke out of my koro trap last season and has been a pain to catch. Finally caught one off the pond dam. Thank you..... Lord...... Now I can rest my brain....... Plus caught a dang opossum again.  :'( So placed 2 sticks in the door to hold it open and walked away. Hope he knows he is free to leave. Lol.  Hope you like the pictures. Tomorrow I will clean out the truck a little. Need to pull the rest of the cat traps and swim thrus. Plus start a new per bait and set 2 cat traps and 3 skunk sets.

1 Opossum, and 2 beavers today.  The swim thru I moved paid off. I broke the dam again and reset. Also the Bailey Dam set paid off to.  :IBCOOL: I just might have enough to make a blanket and a few pillows.   I set up a new bait site and set a trap with out the door. Placed my trail cam outside of the trap at the end. Hoping to get pictures of critters looking in my trap. Sorry for crappy pictures for got my camera.

Bagged a small beaver and missed one.  So I pulled the 2 traps and will save the little guys for next season. The channel was good this season ended up with 9 beaver from one spot. Set 2 cat, and 3 skunk sets today. I will pull the 5 swim, and 1 cat trap Friday and if I don't see a cat on trail cam by friday. I will pull a traps thus ending my season. Here are some pictures of the new cat set and my beaver from today

well I shot a spike and right at the same time some other guy fired. I won by 2 ran out but I dropped that spikes I didn't shoot it and I finished off the spike. Ask the guy so how we going to figure this one out and he goes it dropped when I shot so I didn't even argue with him I just walked off. Wasn't worth fighting over but the season was fun I seen three shooters but it didn't happen.
