For starters, I am going to be more adiment about using decoys. I missed the oppertunity to shoot 2 birds last year because they were looking for the source of the call and made a B line right past me out of view :bash: I am also going keep a diaphram call handy for when I switch from my slate/box call to my gun.
-
Head up north to a spot a buddy of mine has seen lots of turkeys.
Hopefully the snow doesnt screw the first week for me again :bash:
-
I'D START SCOUTING EARLY IF YOU CAN
-
WELL I TAXIDERNYED A STUFFER DECOY FOR PHANTOM GOBBLER AND WE WILL HAVE TO SEE HOW IT DOES FOR HIM. STILL HAVE TO PAINT IT'S HEAD
-
I plan on sneaking up on the morel mushroom snatching it off the ground and move my way to the next one
-
Slayer, Stuffer is looking really good! Adding a little blue color in the head will finisher er off nicely. Now where is that field you were talking about that has a flock of 10 mature gobblers? ;) ;)
-
Trying out new deeks and some Magnus Bullhead broadheads. lso looking over some new ground closer to home.
Best of luck out there!
-
when I find sign I am going to keep on going until I dont see sign and wait for those sneekie *censored*s to catch up!!!
-
Decoys have burned me more than helped me... :dunno:
-
I am going to put an internet tracking device (Hogan Knows Best Style) on boneaddict's truck and follow him around. Hopefully, he is still using his bow and I can get them just before they get into his range. 8)

turkey slayer..Let me know how your decoy works out...I mounted two last year to try...they got the *censored* screwed out of them...Unreal. Just some helpful tips after using them in the field take clear epoxy with you..in case skin tears...from all of the rough action! :)
-
put some bright red lipstick on that bird and look out!! She's a looker!! :o
-
POPE,
I like the stuffer...but I also agree with you..I have killed lots of toms without them. They come in looking..It is great in a brushy area. In the open areas I have had those gobblers hang up and look for that hen...when they don't see it..they move on. You never know what will work. I have tried everyhting in my truck to killl a gobbler and never could...I figure he was Gay or he was a subdominate tom that got his ass kicked when he tried to hook up with Mr. Bigs girl. :dunno:

I'm 50/50 as well, a few times I have had a gobbler on a string and pop into view and see my decoy and veer off and keep his distance. They are not always helpful for sure!
-
I've been hunting these damn knuckleheads for about 10 years and not tagged one yet! I've read every book, watched every video, located hot toms, set up, watched them fly down....and leave. I've called the buggers in for other hunters, but never for myself where a shot is taken. I started focusing on shed hunting the last couple years just to take a break from all the frustration.

One thing about gobblers, just when you think your really good, one will show up and show you how much you don't know. I am really glad the birds over on this side of the state are starting to get smarter and more enjoyable to hunt. I love being shown up by a clever bird, makes me work harder and try diffferent calls and tatics, lots more fun then when they gobble, you give them a few soft yelps and they land in front of you at first light.

My new tactic is to drink the whole pot of coffee before killing my turkey at 10:30 am.
That actually happened two years ago...Me and my bud Don decided to sleep in...after our late whiskey campfire...the night before...We got up at 7:00 and I started cooking breakfast...Huckleberry pancakes, sausage, eggs and got the coffee pot going...Halfway through cooking the meal......A turkey gobbles below camp. I was like was that what I think that was? I go Don did you hear that ...he said No...Then the turkey gobbled again...I looked at Don and he smiled ...I said well we can't have that! We put down the coffee mugs and put our stuff on and walked down the trail..I call bird gobbles and comes right in I shoot him...And can't believe it...We get back to camp and the coffee was still hot!...Yeah baby I love the Spring.. :chuckle:
-
THE STUFFER ISEN'T FOR ME IT'S FOR PHANTOM GOBBLER, I DON'T REALLY USE DECOYS
-
I plan on finishing up all the breakfast and coffee after I lure Yelp away from camp with my tube gobble......lol :chuckle:
-
Poor Don...no breakfast.. :chuckle: Damn...You never know what is going to happen at turkey camp... :chuckle:
-
bow4elk...keep at it...If you have called in for others you know why we continue to hunt these damn birds. Do you hunt private or public? keep at it..
-
New Tactics...something I have always wanted to try...I want a Realtree Hangglider/Turkey vest to get around these damn mountains...LOL :)
-
IM THINKING ABOUT HUNTING THEM OUT OF A TREE STAND ABOUT 20 FEET HIGH
-
That actually might be a good idea...
IM THINKING ABOUT HUNTING THEM OUT OF A TREE STAND ABOUT 20 FEET HIGH
-
Here is my new tactic:
They will be ditching the duck garb and sporting some turkey vests....look out turkeys!
-
those hunters look serious :chuckle:
-
Thats their game face/snarl. :chuckle:

Yelp & Slayer, I will let you know after the season how the new stuffer worked out. Last year in NE WA with all the snow the birds were down low during the first two weeks of the season and the stuffer would have come in handy. If all the snow melts and we have some decent (warmer) weather, I will be leaving the stuffer in the truck! I agree that decoys are not usually needed. Last year in one of our setups, I had a hen decoy out and called a gobbler came across a large field, but then he shyed away at the 50 yard mark. :'(
-
A late season hunt. I'm busy the first two weeks. :(
