Obviously new to this and have unfortunately not had a chance to pack anything out yet so here is my question. I currently carry a Kuiu 1850 icon pro hunting from the truck on day trips. From what friends have told me they normally return to the truck to get a pack board, return to the animal and pack it out. Seemed reasonable so I purchased a Kelty cache pack as a packboard so I was prepared if something crazy like me getting an animal happened.
As I was looking at other packs last night (I have a pack problem – I love gear! – that I’m trying to control) I came across another issue. If I drop my daypack at the truck and go back in with a pack board I now loose the following items I have the daypack for to begin with - water bladder / GPS / handgun. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one so what do you or have you done to solve this issue? Thanks for any insight you are willing to share.

You're on the right track. Leaving your pack at the truck is Bush League.
Your Icon Pro suspension is definitely capable of hauling meat. Don't you other KUIU guys just loosen the pack and stick quarters between the bag and frame?
-
The pack you have already solves the problem. Search youtube and learn how to set up your pack to haul meat. It is very easy, and I've hauled 100+ lbs. more than once with mine and it works fine. All without having to go back to the truck empty, which has never made any sense to me...

Yes, what he said. Your 1850 on the Icon PRo Frame has the capability of separating from the frame and if all you need to do is add their load/meat shelf, it should be a one and done activity. I used my Stone Glacier in that capacity for 9 or 10 meat packing trips using the meat shelf this year. Amazing difference in comfort using the pack I wear every day, and took my whitetail out in one 100 lb trip.

Howdy, NorseNW,
As others have noted, you probably have what you need already. That's good news, in one way, but then it halts the gear hunt, too!
You can search and find a number of good and extensive pack-related threads on the Forum. The main thing, in my view, is to have a load shelf of some kind. That way, you need not leave behind personal gear.
I use the Stone Glacier "Approach," but as many hunters on here will attest, many companies (such as Kuiu, Mystery Ranch, and Kifaru) are churning out excellent hunting packs.
Good luck,
John

Actually you did not specify, did you buy the 1850 with the frame or as the bare pack with just suspension and belt? It is the one pack that is available that way so figured I would ask...
If you have the Icon pro with frame then +1 to what others have said. The pack you have is the ultimate do all pack quite honestly. You have a nice reasonably light day pack that is also a great meat hauler. I in fact just bought that exact package to replace my normal daypack and separate metal pack frame.
This gives you an idea of how it works.
The one thing I am thinking about doing is making some sort of actual fabric shelf to bridge between the pack and frame. KUIU also makes a Load hauler kit (http://"http://www.kuiu.com/hunting-backpacks-packs/kuiu-pack-load-hauler/86005.html?cgid=pack-system&dwvar_86005_color=SteelGrey#start=19") that has a fabric shelf which is what I am going to try and copy.
If you have just the bare pack and suspension without frame I would consider buying one of their bigger packs, maybe the 5200 with the frame, that would give you a big pack if you want to back country hunt/camp and the frame to use with the 1850 for day packing...
Depending on where you hunt I would never head back to a kill site/hung meat without at least a sidearm. Lots of things in the woods more *censored* than humans that may have found your stash before you get back. I also prefer having all the rest of my gear, specially water and food. We have lost at least one hunter in WA over the years on a packout after a successfull hunt. Packing out it could get dark, you get lost, fall get hurt, etc day pack gear could save your life.

This is the pack I have been running. It's a little heavy at around 7 lbs but not bad. I have had well over 100lbs in it. Has enough external pockets you can move gear to the outside pockets and load the main bag up with meat. Or when you get back with the first load to the rig. You can drop the bad and just use the frame.

I run a gunslinger If I am going to be within a mile or so of the rig or know I can get a rig or quad to a down anaimal. If I know I am going to be packing like with most of my elk hunting. I will always use the above pack. No fun to come out several miles and get a pack then return to start the task.

Obviously you NEED another pack ASAP  :chuckle: Seriously though packs can be addicting. I will echo what others have said, you may have everything you need already in the Icon Pro. If not the addition of the suspension frame should get you there and multiple options as well.
I will probably be the one hunter to offer any advice contrary to the opinion that having a pack capable of going out loaded is not an absolute necessity. But in certain situations the limitations from these packs takes away from my "sneakiness". Of course those situations may not be applicable to you at all.

I did forget to mention I do have the load sling capable part on the Kuiu. Yes I do have the frame and the pack for the 1850 as well as a 3200 bag in case I want to overnight it sometime. I purchased the pack boards before I had the Kuiu.
I forgot to say my plan was to make a trip back to the truck with one load of meat between the bag and frame on the Kuiu. I was not sure if the pack board gave me more load capability or not. I just still had it stuck in my head to go back, get the pack board and return for another load. Based on your gents input it sounds like I have two pack boards for sale!
I definitely prefer the method of dumping the load of meat at the truck and returning with my day pack still attached and all my survival type gear, water, sidearm, etc still with me.
ipkus - really glad to hear you have hauled that kind of weight with the pack. Having never done it before I was worried about how that would work. Honestly not sure I could pack out #100 pounds but at least my pack will do more than I can
NumaJohn - "it halts the gear hunt, too!" - you are most definitely fired as my personal consultant for such crazy talk!
carpsniperg2 - you definitely are on the right track. I've never even seen that pack before - more stuff to "look" at
Thank you gents!

Here is a classic HW thread. I still see a pic of me pop up standing in my pack from time to time lol. Some better pics and more pack conversation.
Made me stop and think about colockumelk RIP and the laughs we had on this one.

As I can't pack out even a whole mule deer (OK, I'm a wuss), I use my Badlands 2800 for a day pack and I can easily haul out half a muley with that pack. Then I go back with my meat hauler, a Cabelas Alaskan. It has additional storage for smaller items like water, knives, etc.

I hauled elk quarters for the first time this year with my Badlands Superday and am now looking at KUIU Icon Pro package for the same reason.
Anyone have one they want to sell?
This is not to insult the Superday. It did beyond what it was supposed to do.

You just missed a few FS in the last 2 weeks. Most recent sold 2 days ago I think. They do pop up, so keep your eyes open!

Thanks
I saw those and began my research and they sold.

First load back to the truck is always in the day pack, the rest of the loads come out on the pack frame.

Having tried it I don't find any advantage to using packboard over the kuiu. With the meat in a Kuiu XL bag or in a qtr bag I strap it between the pack and frame and then shuttle loads out. Go a half mile, drop the meat hike back for a second load, go a mile, then back for first load you dropped. Shuttle til out. Gives you a rest while still moving vs stopping to take a rest. ( I'm 60 packing up to 100 #) Takes just a minute to drop load or put new one in.
