Post by: JJD on December 18, 2016, 03:42:58 PM
.243 bullets for Deer.  Reloading

I would think that 87 or 90 gr would be absolute minimum.

What brand, type and weight do you use for deer?

distance, less than 200 yds

Both muley and whitetail.

105 Berger if you have the right twist.

I use 85 grain Barnes TSX.  I've used them on everything from whitetails, to mule deer, to elk.  They work great for what I want them to do.

Wife's savage shoots the 100 grain partitions extremely well and they are devestating on game.

I'm sure some genius will be along shortly to say how .243 is marginal on North American Game and how we all owe it to the Animals to use a Viperbatslayer magnum.

Or maybe they will call us liars when we share our experience with 243 on deer!  :chuckle:

Back on topic... 95 grain Berger classic hunters have been great from my 243. As have 95 ballistic tips.  :twocents:

I've taken and seen a lot of game taken with the .243 and my favorite is the 95gr ballistic tips.  100gr partitions have performed very well, and last year I bang flopped a big MT mule deer with a 105 gr Berger VLD.  It was fantastic and the only reason I don't say it's my favorite is because I haven't seen it work enough yet.  That 105 is all that I'll be loading from here on out though.

We have killed a pile of deer with a .243 most of them with 100 grain core lock, I know not very glamorous but out to 300 yard they flattened every deer we shot. We did shoot 1 little buck and 1 doe deer with the blue box federals. Again drt but it was the only bullets we ever recovered and they shed a lot of weight so I switched back to the Remington's.

85 grain Barnes triple shock to 95 grain ballistic tips, has always produced a dead deer within 100 ft or closer from the shot.

I don't even get that fancy.  100 gr Hornady's.  I have killed probably 50 deer and antelope with that bullet.

I've only shot 100gr factories from mine.  Only one that didn't group well was Remington Core-lokt, it digests Federal, Winchester, Hornady and all have been good terminal performance.

100gr Remington Core-Lokts and Hornady Interlocks have knocked many down for us.  Both Factory and handloaded.  Doesn't take anything expensive, they're just deer...

Love my 243, the only problem I see on big game is people shoot it a long ways cause it shoots flat, BUT it runs out of energy quick due to light bullets, I consider the 243 a 300 yard deer gun, no further, coyotes ??as far as you can hit em.

Carl

Yes.  Federal 100-grain blue box- the deer I have taken with this .243 Win round (shot from Savage model 16) were down pretty quickly.  My Idaho whitetail buck last year did make it about 80 yards on a solid double-lung shot, but I think that was fairly atypical.  A friend of mine, using my gun and the same bullet, dropped a big mountain muley in Montana right in its tracks.

I double lunged a black tail doe this year at 70 yards with a 300 win mag shooting a 200 grain bullet.  She made it 60 yards.  Last year my elk went about the same distance with 3 in the heart and lungs. I don't think the bang flop is directly related to which high power rifle load you shoot.

The only deer that I have bang flopped, was a muley buck with a 300 win mag spine shot, and a blacktail buck with my 243, accidental shot behind the right ear. :o

I've done it with a 308, 270, 300 mag and .50 muzzleloader.  I've also had them run off after the shot with those same weapons.

I agree! Bullet choice is a big one! and shot placement. I have heard lots of good stuff about Nosler Partitions. Berger VLD's and Hornady SST's. I have been shooting ELD-X's at Coyotes and they seem to do terrific. looking forward to ventilating a deer with one.

The 90 grain ab was pretty awesome on the couple deer I saw shot with them. One was my wife before we were married. 9 year old (aged by wdfw) whitetail buck, 270 yards and one shot straight through both shoulder ball sockets. Buck crumpled and fell instantly. There was also a average buck shot at 30 yards and straight down. I shot a doe at 170 and had good result also.
That is a pretty dang good bullet in the 243.  :twocents:

If shooting for the boiler room broadside the 95gr SST's have devastating performance. If shooting marginal/raking shots or  hunting where you could see deer or elk that are legal to shoot like it is over in MT then I would use 100gr Partitions.. Just my  :twocents:  from seeing the results many many times over..

That's pretty impressive on 270 yd shot. I've tried a few different powders with the 90gr AB in my daughters Ruger American and can only come up with about 1.5" groups with imr 4350. I'm bound and determined to make them work. Looks like we'll be doing a lot of shooting this summer.

Check out the Hammer Hunter bullets. I've played with a couple now and I'm going to move all of my hunting guns over to running these by next season. Think of them as a cross between a Berger and a Barnes.

Steve Davis is very responsive to questions and he's easy to catch on their forum.

100 gr Hornady Interlock BTSP over a healthy charge of IMR 4831 does the job on deer swimmingly. Atleast whitetails anyway. This load holds the longest kill in my book. 516 yards, didn't even tip over, died like a dog laying down. Shot was taken under pristine conditions.

I ordered 500 nosler  e tip bullets in 86gr. Hope to develop a good load and use these out of the 243. Should be able to get good speed and hunt solid to 300 yards without any issues. Anybody have any experience with these bullets and performance?

I couldn't get them to group well out of my Ruger American compact......So I sold the rifle!! :chuckle:. My other .243's like the 100 grain partitions so never tried them again.  If you're like them....I know a guy that has a few laying around for cheap. ;)
