I'll be applying again.  Might put a new spin on it by applying for a specific unit I have my eye on.  Odds about the same as a general tag.  Playing the numbers and weather, always the weather.

I just put myself and my son in for elk - area 7. We have max points so it should be a sure deal based on what you needed to draw the last two years. Put a deposit down with and outfitter a year ago so as long as we pull our permits this will be our year for an out-of-state guided hunt.

The migrations hunts out of Yellowstone are the best.

As Big Shooter said the units around the park and in the Cody area but these units are loaded with grizzly bears. These units are big country with pockets of elk making DIY tough if you are not familiar with the country so I would recommend hiring an outfitter if you draw based on my experience as these have really turned into almost once in a lifetime tags for non residents with the preference point system.  Unit 124 in the southern part of the state has big bulls but is not your typical elk country it is more open sage brush country.  All of these units will require max points and the odds are still poor.

I think I'm going to use my antelope points and the deer and elk keep growing. Anyone have recommendations for 3 points?

4 of the 6 units bordering yellowstone are general and 55 takes 4 points? Am I totally wrong?

You are right.  But those aren't the units I'm talking about.

their point system is better, 75% of the tags are given to those with max points, then everyone is included in the draw for the remaining 25% of the tags.  It gives those guys with max points a huge advantage, just like I wished Wa would do.  I will be in this year for elk again, 1 less than max points because I spaced out one year.

I've only applied points in recent years in WY but decided to take the plunge for pronghorn this year.  6 points gave you a 78% odds of drawing last year.  I have 8 points going into this year so I should be guaranteed a tag.

My question is how the doe pronghorn tags work.  Can I apply for a doe tag in the same unit as well and get drawn for both?  Or can I only have 2 tags if I buy leftover doe tags?

Thanks!

You can put in for two doe tags and draw them, check the results from last year for the odds.  I'm not sure if it is possible to only draw one as I have always drawn two (I only hunt in easy to draw units).

If I remember right, you can check a box to only enter the doe draw if you pull the buck tag so you don't end up with only doe tags if you don't want to.

I'm only going to put in for points this year. I was going to put in for deer but I drew a Nevada deer tag.

You can apply for two doe tags in any unit you want. And then, you could also purchase two more leftover tags after the first and second drawings are done.

July 1 through October 31.

Is October 31st a change from years past? I thought the points deadline used to be Sept 1st? I may be remembering it wrong.

I'm having a heck of a time figuring out their site. I know I missed the draw for this year already but it looks like (and I think it's what bearpaw alluded to) I can purchase a point after their draw results come out? My wife's great uncle offered to pack me into the wilderness for elk if I ever draw so I want to take him up on that lol.

Yes you can buy points every summer for each species.

If you're a non-res, make sure he has a guide permit.   Non residents aren't allowed in the wilderness areas for hunting without the proper "escort".

Yeah I think he said he just has to apply for it and gets it. So just so i am understanding it correctly I would be able to apply next year with a point like I had applied this year and not gotten drawn?

Well that's awesome. He came up and was talking to me about this year and his wife kept telling him it was too late, she finally looked it up and it was past the deadline but it's great I can get a little leg up anyway. Entertaining the idea of going anyway just to help out and have a good time. Thanks for help clearing that up for me
