If all is tight on the gun, the bore clean and good reliable ammo....sounds like a scope issue.

Send it to them, they will diagnose and return either a repaired or new scope to you.

I have emailed them first for a good contact prior to shipping.....

Check out their site at: http://Leupold.com/

You could shoot the gun without adjusting the scope and it would hit in a different spot. The cross hairs seemed square to each other and it never moved from the recoil of the shot. I am trying to get a hold of Leupold to see if i can return it under there lifetime warranty.

I'd be curious to know how you determined how the cross hairs were not moving after the shot.  The best way is to put a collimator on the rifle, mark the coordinates, remove the collimator, shoot the rifle, check the coordinates. Repeat as often as necessary. It's a pain, but it will let you know.  If shooting in the vice (not a really good idea IMO) is how you determined the cross hairs weren't moving, you really have no idea.

If you have not be sure you double check the screws in rings, mounts and bases. Loose screws will let the whole scope assembly jump around from shot to shot.  If it's not the scope, that is the next most likely culprit.

After that, I'd check the tension on the screws holding the action in the stock.  If any of those are loose, you will get results as you describe.

It can also be something really silly like the barrel finally has developed too much copper fouling or something and that can make things go south in a hurry.

I also had a Remington in 300 Win that had developed a crack in the rear tang area of the stock which did the same thing you describe.

But scopes are a mechanical beast, and mechanical things can and do fail at times.   Leupold has top notch warranty and service department.  You can return it and they will fix it.  :twocents:

Good point, this happened to me years ago. A thorough cleaning and problem was fixed.

You might try mounting a different scope on it and see if that makes a difference, it would eliminate alot of variables.   If it still shoots bad it's the rifle, if it shoots good it's the scope.

That pretty much settles it, it's the scope.  Lucky you it's a Leupold and they have some of the customer service and warrenty in the business.  Send it back and they'll fix it no questions asked.  I broke the erector assembly on a VariX-II 1x4x20 on my 35 Whelen.  They fixed very quickly.

Have had to send one Leupold in for a repair a couple years ago. Talked to them on the phone and they said it would be a couple weeks out, I told them I was going on a hunting trip in a couple days..... they said no problem and sent me brand new scope as a loaner!  Now THAT'S customer service!  They have my business for life as a result.

I have NOTHING but GOOD to say about Leupold's customer service....

I have a Vari-X II 3-9 on my Winchester SS/composite 30-06...It got used as a landing skid as I slid down a scree feild...dinged up the rifle stock, rifle and scope something fierce.  This at the END of deer and I have a big elk hunt coming up the NEXT WEEK...I called Monday and asked if there was ANYTHING I could do short of a NEW scope in the time frame involved. Leupold sent me a "loaner scope" while I next-dayed MY scope to them, I got a call on Thursday telling me that MINE was FIXED but that it couldnt get there in time for my hunt...so go with the loaner and tell them how i liked it.  I sighted the rifle in on Thursday, hunted for 4 days and bagged an elk, got back to home with elk and loaner scope to find my scope in a box WITH A RETURN LABEL, shipping paid for the loaner.

Swap again...and I have a slew of Leupolds on my rifles now...I get them whenever I can afford them.  that was, by the way, my FIRST Leupold, to that time I had hunted with vintage Redfield 2-7X scopes almost exclusively.

Leupold is the best, on a grizzly hunt in Alaska getting on a float plane in bad weather rifle got thrown into plane scope hit the bottom leg and scratched the glass bad enough that you could not see through it. I wrote them a letter explained what had happened and I had a NEW scope in about 3 weeks.

I always buy Leupold when I can

Leupold's have always treated me well.  I've experienced scope float with some lower end Simmons scopes in the past though.  Stay away from them.

My brother had the same exact problem with leupold 4.5x14x40mm VXIII sent it to leupold they sent it back with a site in target in one week, it had a loose reticle. The scope had been fired after repair at the factory and fixed in that short of time great customer service.

Like Leupold.  Got a VX II 3x9 on my Ultra Mag.  Best scope I've owned.

Just wondering if anybody has seen this before in Leupold, or in other brands. If any body knows what the return policy is that would be nice to know also, but i will attempt to look it up.
Yes - I have seen it happen several times in the Leupolds. It's usually the adjustments and some times the reticle that goes bad. I have seen shots go all over the target and then I have seen where you couldn't even make an adjustment...they would "seize" up.

It is really good that Leupold has such great Customer Service.   I bought my first scope in 1966 a Weaver k-4, it's still in use on my nephew rifle.  Since then I've owned a bunch of rifle scope and had them on some pretty heavy kicking rifles, I even owned a gun shop for a few years, right now I'm taking a rough quess and I think I have about 15+.  I've owened Weaver (old and new), Bushnell, Redfield, Lyman, Kollmorgan, Tasco(70's era), Leupold, Nikon, and a couple of Burris scopes.  The only scope that I have ever had a problem with was a Leupold Vari-X II 1x4x20mm that died on a 35 Whelen, Leupold fixed it right away and I still use it and like it very much but keep it on a light kicking 300 Savage.  Put a Weaver V-3 on the Whelen and have no problems since.

I bought a used rifle once with a Leupold 2x7 scope on it that I couldn't get the point of impact to move far enough to the right to get it sighted in. I sent it to the factory and I had the repaired version in my mailbox 10 days later. They replaced the windage and elevation adjustments for no charge and its worked great ever since. Even though there are alot of very good scopes out there, I won't put anything on my hunting rifles but Leupolds.  The quality and price agree with me.
