So what is everyone's favorite caliber for hunting big game? If you could only choose 1? What is your choice of caliber for a sidearm you pack for protection while hunting?
I choose the .30-06, and the .45
I know one gun choice is "boring", but lets keep it to your favorite caliber of rifle and sidearm.

7 Mag and 40 sw
-
30-06. And I see no need for another gun while out hunting. If it's dense bear country I may also carry bear spray.
-
.338 Win Mag , .338 Win Mag

-
6.5 creedmoor...and I only carry a 22 for grouse...no need for a sidearm.

Glad to see you back jay!
Mine would be 375 hh and 45 acp. Though when rifle hunting I normally don't pack a pistol
-
If I had to pick one it would be 7mm rem mag and 38 special. But I don't carry while I hunt and I don't use 7 mag anymore either. I hunt deer with 270 win and elk with 325 wsm.
-
7mm rem mag / .45 ACP
-
300wsm/40

I have to go with the OP on this one - .30-06 and .45. I've got the Springfield and I want a 1911 Kimber or Colt badly.
-
280ai and 44 special.
-
22 LR and 22 LR

Left and right. :twocents:
-
300 win mag in the browning a bolt....45 ACP but rarely, rarely carry in the field.
-
Bowtech Carbon knight ever since I met Coach :chuckle:
And my .40 is ALWAYS on my hip..

300wsm or a 30-06. Sidearm a 10mm if I carry one.

7mm Rem Mag and Ruger 45 Colt

Just because my lucky elk rifle is chambered in it (that I bought used):
7STW
-
300WSM/10mm

My favorite deer rifle is a Tikka chambered in.308 win. and my go-to elk rifle is a 300 win mag.

This year was a REM 700 257 Weatherby and Sig nightmare 357 Sig.

30.06 and .22 LR or .22 mag.
I've got a stainless Ruger single six with inter-changeable cylinders. I like to pack it with the .22 mag cylinder loaded with birdshot when I'm deer or elk hunting in case I see a grouse. Works great.

Sitka do you use the blue tipped birdshot or the old style crimped brass type? I have had terrible luck with the blue stuff, perhaps its me??
-
300 H&H and if I take a pistol its a 22LR revolver.
H&H has proven too hot for deer though.

I use the plastic tipped CCI loads. They don't have a lot of range, but work great for knocking them off a branch overhead, or one that's just sitting on the ground looking at you. I don't attempt any wingshots. By the way, the .22 LR birdshot loads are worthless.
-
.243/.357 for deer sized or smaller critters. Larger stuff or bear country .300WM/.44 mag.
-
Mathews DLD :chuckle: :chuckle: :hello: And S&W M&P 45 sheild :yike:

-
30/06 and 9mm

My rifle is 300 Win Mag and side arm is Ruger .357. It is so nice to carry the side arm with bird shot for grouse while hunting. No one ever turns down grouse with camp dinner!

-
Rem 700 in 7mm Mag/.45
-
Great looking deer ,rem 700 has been my go to rifle for almost 20 years ,never lets me down
-
Well, since this is the deer hunting list, Browning micro-medallion .284 win and if i carry a handgun, a .44 mag
-
For last season, it was a 6.5 Grendel CZ 527 for the rifle and the 338/375 Ruger carried in the Eberlestock for the side arm. Great combo! Since I like to shoot small deer I like to use a small rifle :chuckle:

Next year will be the 338 SnipeTac rifle and pistol combo. That's what I used for bear this year. Everybody loves a matched pair.

depends on where I was hunting at, but either .30-30 or my .300 Win Mag, and for sidearm, don't always carry one but it's soo hard to choose which one to carry. .357, .40 or .45.
-
If I had to choose 1 rifle caliber it would have to be a 338 win mag even though I've used a 7 mag most of the time the last 10 years. For my pistol caliber I'd go with a 40s&w. Again I've carried a small 380 the last few years as its small size easily fits into the pouch on my backpack belt.

Depends if you are a one gun guy or a two gun guy. If you are a one gun guy its a Browning BAR 30-06 (possibly a 7mm). If you are a two gun guy, its a Browning BAR 270 win for deer and antelope and a Browning BAR 300 Win mag for Elk size game. No need to carry a side arm in the field when you are rifle hunting. I carry enough gear that I wouldn't want the excess weight and bulk. But that might be that I am an aggressive hunter and will put in 10 plus miles a day. Just my two cents :twocents:
-
There are plenty of aggressive hunter that put 10 miles a day plus on that carry a side arm. I can only tell you my personal experience. 2 time in my life already in the woods hunting. I have had a side arm save my butt. If I had tried to get my rifle off I would have been mauled. Once it was in my pack and once I had the strap across my body while climbing up some steep country. A few pounds of extra weight can be cheap life insurance is all I am saying
This year my combo of choice was my 6.5 stw and 44mag. A lot of times 300wsm and 357.

If I was hunting in Grizzly country I would carry a side arm for sure too!! Good comment Carpsniper!
-
300WSM. 44Mag
-
For all around big game in Washington I prefer my .338 with a 2x7 Leapold VariX II and a 6 Mil Dot.
As a surveyor my preferred side arm is my machete for the unruly vine maple.
I leave the side arm at home.
Having spent 35 years working in the woods, I see no need to pack a pistol.
-
300 RUM C.C. or 338 EDGE, 40 M&P SHIELD.
-
.308 bolt action. Don't have a sidearm at the moment, sold to take care of a couple bills.

Mind sharing what happened? Did the caliber make the difference between being mauled and walking away, or did simply having something handy that went boom work?
-
7mm-08 and bear spray. I carry a 9mm Beretta Nano everyday everywhere, except when carrying a bigger gun ;). I would 100 times rather spray a bear than wound one with my 9mm anyway...
-
This year....308 and 460. :chuckle:
-
.308 and .357 Sig unless I'm in shorts. Then it's a 9mm
-
300 WSM/no handgun.

Old Ruger M77 in 270 Winchester, and a double stack Para-Ordnance 14.45, in Stainless of course.

Caliber of handgun not so much. Just having it saved me. Being able to get something up super fast made the difference. Both times.
Once was a sow with cubs I came up on. She didn't even blink and came for me. I surprised her and my natural instincts/training pulled the gun. I don't even remember grabbing for it. I fired a shot and she did a 180 and left. I was surprised she didn't have to be killed, she was committed until the gun shot. If I had not had a handgun or tried to get my rifle off cross body as I was in steep stuff. I would have not had enough time and been mauled.
The other time was following a boar hog that had been wounded by a client. Rifle was in my pack and went to look for first blood. I went trough the first patch of oak scrub like a idiot, didn't look first and had my eyes on the ground looking for blood where it had been hit. To my surprise I hear a crash, pulled my gun as I knew what was coming. Put 2 out of 3, 44 mags in him before he got to me. He died 7 steps from me. My first shot missed his head and broke his stride with a chest strike, 2nd was head and put him down and 3rd was a wiff as he was going down. He would have tired to kill me is he had got on me. No time to get my long gun out of my pack.
I have been chased several times by hogs. Me and hogs don't get long and Russian are very vindictive pigs.
About 4 months after that my buddy that owns the operation got smashed and mauled my a big boar. His handgun saved his life while he was getting mauled. He got smashed before he saw the pig.

22 LR and 22 LR
:yeah: :yeah: :yeah:
And if that doesn't do it, then a round from a PMR30 will.
Then again, one has to abide by the laws (or so it seems). So, a little more lead might be required depending on state regs. Cutting a critter in half from a half mile away or more is not my style and I don't consider it humane. I also don't consider unlawful wolf introduction humane either.
I prefer a sharp stick though.
It's shot placement that counts in most cases.
-
.270 win and only carry .357 during archery/muzzle seasons
-
Just switched over to a 300WSM and when I do carry a side arm I like to have my Ruger single six in .22lr for grouse
-
I have 2 guns... 9mm m&p shield and .308win savage 11 DOA hunter...
So I guess I'll go with .308 win and 9mm :) :twocents:

I've been wanting to pick up one of those Kel Tecs. You can sure go through a lot of 22 mag at the range with one of those.

Sidearm: ...
Shoulder holster; depending on the season I carry the 50AE Desert Eagle or the .45/70 BFR

Soon to be 300RUM if I chose 1 gun for hunting. Side arm while hunting 500S&W in a chest holster, in town 40M&P

If I draw second deer this year it will become the 45 Colt in my 1894 Cowboy.

I never used to feel the need to carry a side arm until three years ago after a Deer hunt in Idaho. Helped my partner pack out his Deer and from the time we headed down the trail until we got to the truck we both felt like we were being followed. After we got unloaded and settled down on the tailgate for a much deserved beverage we heard a howl that we figured was only about 100 yards back up the trail we just came down. Now let me say this earlier that same year I went to Central B.C. and hunted Moose and watched a pack of Wolves take a very large Bull Moose down. I now carry a 10mm on my hip no matter if I have my 308 or my 300 WM with me. The side arm choice was what our guide in Canada carried. My wife now carries a 40 when she deer hunts with me.
-
I just bought some 9mm +p 147g HCFN ammo to carry. Debating whether to carry the setup in .45ACP. Probably carry bear spray too at some point.
i just don't want to buy and carry a wheel gun, though I realize less than .357 seems to be ineffective against bears.
Though I think an autoloader caliber might be effective against cougars or wolves.
Plus there's something to say about a loud boom against either of the three animals, in terms of stopping them.
-
30-06. I am from PA. If I were buying now(I am 68) I would look to a mag. My pistol is a .480 ruger super redhawk 9" w/ burris 2 to 7. My son has the .454 casull version. When you pull the trigger you think you were kicked by a mule.
