Title: NOW THATS A BEAVER! 101 lbs
Post by: TeacherMan on February 14, 2017, 11:07:23 AM
Check this big guy out!

Grabbed this pic of the Alaska Trapping Association Facebook page. Looks like it came out of Saskatchewan Canada. Weighed in at 101 lbs! I've personally seen them hit low 70s but this is huge. You'd need a sheet of plywood to stretch it.

Monster for sure!

I recall being in Naknek Alaska and on this little lake I saw a bear that after quite awhile, was actually a beaver.  Just couldn't believe how big he was.

To be that heavy it has to be pregnant. I caught one the other day with 5 kits in it so it is that time of year.

The biggest I ever caught was about 20 years ago weighted in at 86 pounds.  I catch two that day the other was 52 pounds, three days later a 77 pound-eeer.
Six months before that I had a massive heart attack.  Putting that one in the truck I was thinking I was going to have another one.

There was a guy up on the Colville Indian Reservation, that was a snare-man that I knew.  He became the Judge up there.  Chuck VanDyke knows who I'm talking about and maybe Bruce does too.  I can't remember his name.  Anyway he told me here a couple years back before he died that he caught two 125 pounders.  I believe him, he was that kind of guy.

I'll dig up a pic of one I trapped about 4 years ago that I estimated over 100 lbs. It looked about that size and was full of little ones. I've trapped several over 60#

That will be way beyond a super blanket. I would not send that to auction because it will get thrown in with all the other Supers and you will get paid that price. Of that size there must be a better market for it.

Did you take a good look at that beaver.  The hide has a couple of huge rubs.
That one would sell as damage blanket I would think.   :twocents:

I've caught beaver at 82# and Ted has caught 80# they both used a half sheet of plywood to stretch, all the way to the edge. That one pictured would take at least 3/4 sheet.

An old-timer that that introduced me to trapping in the Wind River area used to get over 120 beavers a season - don't think any were close to that size.  He stuffed his freezers full and skinned as time allowed.

Ok, guys I have deleted several "funny" comments. Is it really necessary to make these kind of comments on a public forum.
These kind of threads usually end up being a little problematic. Please use a little good taste when posting.

Since I started weighing them in 2003, I have caught two in the spring time  that were 60, both female with kits in them.  Lots in the 55 range, and a handful between 55 and 60, but nothing bigger. The second 60 became a full body mount.
In the 60's, my dad had gotten the first trapping permits for Ft Leonard Wood  back in Mo.  The local fur buyer back there threw in a $20 for who ever brought in the biggest beaver each year.  They took fur in the round.  Dad thought he had won with a 105 one year, only to be beat out by a 120lber.  The next year he won it with a 110lb'er.

Is there a certain time of year people could lay off trapping when they are birthing kits?

Beaver in WA do not give birth until after trapping season. They will have developing embryos in them in February and March, possibly in January. I've never seen anything big enough to identify in a January beaver in WA. I have in OR.

I had the first ADC Business in Washington for thirty years and I sold it to a Pest Control Company a couple of years back.
I trained them to release and also euthanize wildlife including beaver humanely.
With my Business, when the trapping season was over (end of March) I would always release my beaver and river otter that I caught on complaints.
I would always release them on a big river and ever put them in any pond or lake.
I hear that most Pest Control and Wildlife Control Companies euthanize all beaver now year round.
Fur Trappers have different ethics.  Just my two cents  :twocents:

I believe that transport of live wildlife is not allowed at this time,  The animal either has to be euthanized or released on the spot (at the capture location)

Releasing a beaver at the location where it was caught, when dooing WCO/ ADC work, would not set well with the customer.  The problem still remains in other words.

Very cool information.  I have been to Fort Lost in the Woods many times and trapped not too far from there.

With WCO work with beaver some can be relocated but you have to go through the game department and release them where WDFG want them to be released and that could be a very long drive if you trap on the westside because I believe the only spots they want them relocated to are certain areas on the east side of the mountains

Totally off topic, but what the hey.  Dad set traps along the river, which I am guessing was the Big Piney.  His line would take him all day to run( which was done by floating the river in a jon boat)  That first year, or possibly it was the second, he caught so many coons one day that he thought he was going to sink the boat. He had to stop halfway down the float and stashed his catch at a river crossing .  The second half of the float provided the same results.

From what I gather, Fort Wood had not been trapped since it was opened in 1940.  Dad said he got all the right folks in one spot at some after hours function and forced the discussion.  Up until that point I guess the key players would point the finger at each other as to why trapping had not been allowed. Basically passing the buck.  With them all in one spot, they couldn't play that game and had no good reason as to why trapping couldn't happen. I think dad had it for the first three years.
