Alright everyone. With the weather being like it is, I've been thinking of huntin' So ready for Sept. Grouse!! Which brings up some questions I have on weapons... Typically I just shoot them off the roads with my .22
This year I'm looking to start chasing 'em down with my Dog, and need a shot gun. What should I buy, 12g, 20g, 410? Haven't the slightest Idea on them, or the best buy on brand... Any Help would be great!!
-
Remington 870 12 gauge good all around gun and not to expensive.I use a 22mag
-
A shotgun is a must if you're flushing them with a dog.
I'd go 20 gauge. NEF>
-
I Just use the .410 that my granddad gave me WAAAAY too many years ago. 2-1/2 inch chamber and a load of #6s. Just all mine.
-
My old 16 gauge single shot or my 17 HMR.
Here is a pic of the 17 HMR aftermath, and a pic of my G.F. with here first grouse, shot with my 16 gauge.
-
17 HMR is my favorite...
-
12 gauge
-
I have an old H&R 20ga single shot... been known to get two in one shot with it. :IBCOOL:
-
same here, my old H&R 20 single shot that I bought when I was 8. It is way too small for me and has no front bead, but I love it for grouse.
-
Well, I couldn't decide either so I have a double gun with a .22 on top and a 20 guage shotgun on the bottom barrel. One thing to watch for is legal issues. I think the .22 is illegal or it was. That being said, it's a good caliber to not ruin the bird up close...
-
The .22 is legal for grouse.
-
Thanks for the input! Was going to attempt the two for one once, but by the time I got to the other side of the truck for the shot, they walked off in the brush never to be seen again... A damn walk off! Ah hell!!
-
.410
-
If using a .22 on grouse is wrong I dont want to be right 8)
-
Savage 22/20....awesome to have both options available, the rifle and the shotgun....
Of course I've gotta stick in some pics.... :chuckle:
-
I think any weapon is legal for grouse...at least it used to be. I used to try to take the heads off of blue grouse with my 44 super blackhawk, and my .06... when it didn't work out there wasn't much left.
-
Whatever gun/rock/stick you can grab when you see em works for me :chuckle:. I shot my first one with a single shot 20. Since then I usually use a .22 or 12 gauge but have also taken some with rocks and my .280 when deer hunting was just hunting and I needed a little shooting. Tough part of larger caliber is ensuring a good backstop and a glancing blow or head shot, a direct hit ruins the best camp meat ever.
-
great tip-- when shooting grouse on a old gravel road using a high power rifle. Aim a foot or two infront of the bird. The gravel will spray the bird and you can run up and grab it.
-
I always just shoot the head off. The trick is, if they are really close, you need to remember a scoped rifle will always shoot LOW. So aim a little high. I usually aim at the top of the head and a lot of times it will hit at the base of the neck. Perfect! :chuckle:
-
Got a limit bow hunting in the Pasayten one time with a stick, could have got more. A bunch flew up into thick trees and I just went in under them with a 6' stick and wacked them, they where young but they tasted good. It was almost like if I cant see you, you cant see me. Good dinner on an overnight pack in.
-
My brother got a limit of spruce grouse in the Pasayten with a sling shot. We also enjoyed grouse for dinner that night, along with the chicken/rice Mountain House.
-
i usually use just a .22. if i use a shotgun its a remington 870 12 gauge.....
-
With a dog, I use a 16ga., 20ga. or 28ga. SXS with IC/modified chokes; very fun to shoot on the wing after the flush from Chesapeake.
-

good pics with the kids Ice
-
I've got the same gun as iceman in the same calibers...i've used my bow(tried) and also a browning gold 12 gauge.
there is a max. caliber that can be used for grouse i think. i believe shooting them with your deer rifle for example or with a 44 mag is illegal, but can't verify it here at work.
i might be wrong.
-
i tend to just use my 870 wingmaster 20 gauge does a nice job on them

Yep.

Forest Grouse
Forest grouse may not be killed with
any rifle or handgun 24 caliber or
larger, or shotgun containing slugs or
buckshot, during modern firearm deer
or elk seasons unless appropriate
deer or elk tags are in the hunter's
possession. Forest grouse may be
taken with shotguns as well as firearms
smaller than 24 caliber during
the entire grouse hunting season.
Taken from the 2008 regs.
My favorite is a .22 handgun. Preferably my Ruger 22/45.
-
12ga or 20ga with trap reloads, or my single six with the 22mag cylinder
-
Whatever I happen to have.... 300, 410, stick, rock :chuckle:
-
I kill them with what ever i have with me at the time! I take the 12ga ,22lr or the 22mag when im actully hunting them! :twocents:
-
I have used my 12, 20, 22, 30-30, and 30-06.......mostly use the 12 or the 20 gauge though........i am gonna try to take one with the bow this year :)
-
Buddy of mine used to have a .410 Contender pistol... that thing's sole purpose on this earth was dispatching grouse. I could also shoot .45 Long Colt rounds out of it... wouldn't be a bad SHTF kind of weapon.

Got a buddy who has one of those.....its Bitchin.....
-
I use my bow or my 410 it all works.
-
I use .22 or 20 guage, when I am deer hunting, I use slingshot with buckshot in it.
-
My dad shot "near" one with his .54 T/C Hawken... missed it by a foot, but the spray from the bullet hitting the ground did the trick. He brought it back, tossed it at me, and said "here ya go, boy. Clean it.". Messy, but tasty!
As for me, I love my 20ga side/side! It's taken many! But the .22, .410, bow, truck, 12ga, have all taken their share as well!
I can't wait for september...
-
So I ended up purchasing A Mossberg 500c 20Ga pump. Couldn't beat the price for what I looked at. So ready for Sept. Gonna have to get out soon and try it out!!
-
Great choice. I bought the same in the youth model for my kids. great shotgun.
-
i use a marlin 925 bolt action 22lr a shotgun is to heavy for the style of hunting i do and remington hollow points sure do put those bird down :chuckle:
-
Use either the mossberg 12 gauge or the 410 or the 22. LIke the 410 because it can be folded up placed in my backpack.
-
Been wondering if I should buy a different choke for the Mossberg 500c... Any suggestions?
-
i shot one with my 7wsm at 100yds. never even touched the bird. the bird dropped dead in its tracks :dunno:
i usually use a .410 or 20ga. ive also been known to bag a new with rocks.
-
I use a 20 or a 12 it just matters if I am in a truck or on foot
-
Wildbear
I use an improved cylinder in my 500C for everything including grouse. Mossberg doesn't make anything more open for the 20, but I've thought about getting an aftermarket one in skeet or just straight cylinder. For grouse on the wing, you will want as open a choke as you can get. I've also gotten to using a sling on mine and mossberg sells the posts for really cheap on their website.

Thanks for the info Dave. Was wondering about the possibilities of a sling. Can't wait to get out there!!

You wont get the drop on a flushing grouse if your gun is slung on your shoulder. If you can you guys must be very fast.
-
My favorite grouse gun is an old Winchester side by side in 16 gauge.

EVERYONE:
Please keep in mind that shooting grouse off the roads is a no-no.
Can't shoot across, along or from or in the road.
Ask the bird politely to walk off the road, and you follow and then shoot him :chuckle:
-
Single 410 over the pointer or setter
-
My choice would be my 28 gauges....perfect for grouse, lightweight and fast swinging.
-
My .410, that I've had since age 11... lost count of the grouse LONG ago...but tis a PILE of them.
My late grandfather gave me that one...we hunted grouse out behind Lake Whatcom, he used his .22.
I've shot them with .38 specials, 30-06, sticks, rocks and walked up an grabbed them. ( really stone stupid birds...If i cant see you...you cant see me...)
-
What a pity the feds made the old H&R Handi guns in .410 illegal. I hope the boneheads responsible for that idiot decision are burning in the hottest corner of Hell.
A great little gun, and one hellacious good grouse killer up until 1934!
I've seen a few of them around that were in pristine condition and I'm pretty sure they weren't registered by the old gents who owned them...people from "that" generation who worked the CCCs and WPA projects and rebuilt this country from the ruins of the Great Depression. Solid people, every damn one of 'em, just like my grandpa.
None of those people, not a one of 'em, would have ever entertained a notion of breaking the law and committing a crime...but when some government man told them their little grouse pistols were "sawed off shotguns," I think there was a resounding "F...O...!"
About the closest thing that comes to them now are the "snake charmer" guns if you can find them.
I have a little .410 single shot from Rossi that's going to get a try-out this fall.
-
you know you could try a .410 pistol ive got a super comanche
http://www.firestorm-sgs.com/supercomanche.htm
thats preety neat gun shoots a preety good pattern too out to about 25 yards they usualy run about 200 bucks. but i agree with you about the stupid law i doubt any crimes were ever comited with one of those
-
16 ga. ,45 acp or 30-06  They all have done the trick for me.
-
Either a remington 870 express 20 gauge. or a .410 so they dont blow to pieces if you miss the head.
-
Pickup truck in 1/2 or 3/4 ton. I find Dodge, Ford and Chevy all work equally well.
When they go down they tend to stay down.
-
Rob, did you happen to be visiting the coast this weekend? :chuckle:
-
No, and I have alibis and witnesses.
but your question intrigues me....
-
If i take a shotgun its a Boito sxs 20ga or my model 97 trench gun.
If a .22 comes along its my buckmark .22 or my remington nylon 66 lever (this gun has killed more animals then any other i own).
My other half thinks that grouse are to pretty to shot with a shotgun and she will only use her browning bl.22 lever gun.
-
ive seen the 410 be more expensive than 20 or 12 guage.
i think the best all around grouse gun is a bockbuchesflinte..... uh i mean a rifle over shotgun the savage 22over 20 is really populart.

I really like my grouse guns
M-6 Scout SS .22/.410
Savage .30-30 over 12Ga.
Stevens model 72 crackshot .22
any 12 ga I got with me
Colt Frontier Scout .22

hell, i've never seen .410 cheaper than any 12 or 20. 16, 28 and .410 all seem to usually cost about the same, about double what 12 or 20 gauge loads usually run.

It depends on what you buy and where. I've got a couple of boxes of .410 shells and that'll probably last me the rest of my life, since I do most of my bird hunting with a 12 or 20.
And .22 Long Rifle? I have a few bricks of the stuff, so I'll have plenty.
Do like I always advise people to do when I write about this stuff: Look for the "lost leader" ads from sporting goods stores; the stuff they put on sale just to get people through the door. Impulse shopping can clean out a wallet in no time and these guys know it.
But, if you go in with the single purpose of buying just shotgun shells for $4 a box or whatever, then you score!
Generally, these are No 5, 6 and 7 1/2, so you can't hardly go wrong.
-
I like to use a 20ga or a 410. 12's are a bit hard on them IMO. Here's a weekends worth. We used our little single shot 410's. That was a great weekend.

-
not as pretty with the 22 mag but then end result still the same food
-
Don't need anything more than a mossberg 20 gauge.
-
Guitpile:
That looks like ten grouse for a weekend's worth of hunting.
Nicely done!
Where was this? Somewhere in EW or in WW?
-
It was a 2 day limit of 12 total (6 each). I was in unit 121 a few years back. We were really bear hunting but the grouse were so thick we chased them for a couple of days instead.
-
FYI re: sticks and stones and slingshots:
11. Prohibited firearms/hunting methods
It is illegal to:
• Hunt game birds with a shotgun capable
of holding more than three shells.
• Hunt game birds with a rifle or pistol,
except forest grouse.
• Hunt game birds or game animals with
anything other than a firearm, a bow and
arrow, or by falconry. Bullfrogs may only
be taken by angling, hand dip netting,
gigging, and bow and arrow.
I don't know of anyone being cited for using a slingshot (or sticks or stones), but I've been told by more than one enforcement officer that they could be.
-

Yeah I would think they would have bigger and more important problems to deal with than somebody killing a grouse with a slingshot.

Ah, but this isn't about "game management" it's about "people management" >:(
And BTW: With the agency needing every penny it can scrape up...from fees or FINES...if someone can violate ya, they're going to violate ya.
-
12 guage modified choke with #7 shot, its a gimme
-
I gotta get me a grouse gun. :'(
-
Ruger 77/17 and a 14 power VX III scope is pretty lethal in the head at up to 150 yds. Also, it's great practice for the upcoming hunting seasons. 870 12 guage with 7 1/2 shot is also fun in the right applications.
-
NEF® Pardner single shot 28ga with ľoz #7˝ shot.
-
Savage Model 24 with 22 Mag on top and 20 gauge on the bottom. Also have one in a 22 LR on top and 410 on bottom but have some issues hitting them with the 410 at longer ranges.. Probably not the gun though!
-
Mathews LX 425 gr. arrow with bird tip. Love to eat them fresh in elk camp. Cant wait almost here....
-
As much as I love to hunt grouse with a shotgun, for me it just doesn't get more fun than hunting them with a bow.
-
I've killed grouse with rifle, bow and shotgun but if I had to choose just 1 weapon it would probably be my Marlin .22 rifle. First gun and alot of great memories following my dad around the woods with it. Grouse, coyotes and squirrels didn't stand much of a chance with that gun.
-
you guys might be missing something......those birds just loved to fly into my old blue Jeep Cherokee..rolling along the snoqualmie middle fork road they just kept flying into my drivers side window...if they didn't get in they would run along side for a bit :chuckle: :dunno:
-
My fav is an aroow tipped with an 100GR judo point, takes there head clean off.If not that a 22/22mag or a .410 or the big 12 with a 7 1/2 right in the noodle.Works good usully. :mgun: Slews them tuesday guys.
