Title: Merriams, Rio and Easterns Oh My!
Post by: Diehard0123 on February 19, 2009, 07:09:09 AM
Anyone hunting more than one sub-species this year or will you be sticking to one area?  I am personally going for Mirriams over on the East side but time permitting I may try to locate some birds on the west side.

Just secured myself a trip to the Blues, so right now with time permitting I'll be hunting Merriams the first week or two then down to the Rio's in early May, then focus most of my remaining time in my Eastern Haunts :hunter:

Probably just Merriams. I don't care what subspecies they are... if they gobble, then thats all I care about.

Exactly what I do when I'm trying for all three.  As you know, get that Eastern out of the way early and the single season slam becomes a real possibility.   :)

So far I've only killed Merriams. Wouldn't mind chasing a Rio but havent really put in an effort to find a good spot for them since there's so many Merriams close by. Doubt I'll ever go after an Eastern but who knows what the future holds.  :dunno:

I usually hunt down here in Walla Walla for Rios the first week, then try to get up to my folk's place in Colville for a weekend for Merriams before the season ends.  Didn't make it the past two years because of family obligations, but did OK a couple of years ago.

Hey, Would like to know if anyone knows much about the turkey hunting north of Colville up by Deep Lake?

Well, I can't say that I know much, but the bird in the second pic was from that area.  I was hunting with a buddy that knew a couple of spots.  We couldn't get them to come to us, so it was spot and stalk. The one I killed was the wrong bird.  There were 4 toms and a bunch of hens.  We got to about 30 yards and they were in the brush.  I got a look at the big tom, they busted and started running and I drilled the wrong one.  He only had about a 5" beard.  Like I said, lots of birds just about everywhere up there.

I am going to get an eastern with my recurve, then if the season isn't over (or too many years have past) I will go after the others.

Just Merriam's for me.  My main spot is only 10 minutes from where I live and it gets pricey driving every weekend.

seems to me like if you got the eastern you got the hard one done  :IBCOOL: we live on the west side so I'm hoping I can pull off the eastern, but I've never even seen them before.

I am surprised nobody answered yet, I am not positive but I know previously it was the weekend prior to general opener so (I think) it would be April 11-12.

Got 2 answers to the same question on another thread.  Everyone is pretty sure it is going to be the 4th and 5th.  Still no actual guidance from state of WA.  I guess WDFW wants to make it a surprise.  I am sure it will be in the turkey reg when they release it 15 minutes before the season opens...

Silly me, I told you I didn't know I checked and I was wrong (good thing my kids are too young) yes it probably is the weekend earlier.
