Snohomish County 4H Spring small animal show at the fairgrounds in Monroe this weekend. Not sure if anyone is ever interested in these events, but I share them because I think 4h is a great program for kids. It's more than just animals. There is sewing, foods, photography, model trains, archery, shooting, all kinds of cool projects the kids can participate in. This show will be rabbits and cavies and there will be poultry judging contests.

I was in 4H in Pennsylvania from about 10 until I was 18. The areas I participated in had very little to do with what people tend to think 4H is about, which is farming of some sort. I did rifle and built a radio, model rockets, did photography, had rabbits, learned and participated in beekeeping, had several Seeing Eye dogs, and did a lot of leadership and citizenship type activities all the way up to the national level. It was a great program and I met a lot of people in the county and state, had friends in several different school districts in the county, and for a teenage guy, met a LOT of cute girls! If I had kids of my own, I'd definitely encourage them to participate.

Right on, Dave. Hoping my kiddo will be able to say the same things years from now. She's in rabbits, gardening and photography this year.

She needs to join the poultry ranks :hello:

Pass, at least for now.
Great show. Close to 100 kids and 275-ish rabbits. The camo dads had the market cornered on the baked goods.

Dang. Wish I would have seen this several weeks ago. Would have been fun to take my daughter to.

There's another show in June. I'll get the date for you.
Is she in a club now?
-
June 10th in the commercial building at the evergreen state fairgrounds.

Good stuff. I have some great memories from 4H. It's a solid program that teaches way more than caring for animals, sewing, baking etc.
Glad you have your daughter in it Jackelope.

No she's not in a club right now. She is in Girl Scouts and that takes up some time but I think she would like 4H. I'll put that on the calendar and hopefully we can make it. I'm always talking about getting goats but haven't pulled the trigger on that. If she had her way we'd have horses. She has been asking for a camera so photography would be fun as I enjoy that too.
Thanks

Cool. Look me up if you head down to the show. We can show her around. As far as animals go, our club only has small animal projects, so no goats or horses.

That's really cool! Dig the Camo Dads! 4H is great and very prominent in this part of the country as well. Keep up the good work!

Here's a couple pics of what normally happens at 4h shows for anyone that's curious.
Showmanship is where the kids get tested on their knowledge of their animal. The breed, handling, grooming, etc.

Type judging. The animals get judged on their quality. Kind of like a dog show.

 Sounds good. Looking forward to it. Camo mandatory? :chuckle:
-
Camo is only mandatory at the bake sale LOL. Our club puts on the spring show and the dad's bake sale is tradition now. I believe Widgeondeke spearheaded it last year. I was a newbie at the time. This year we went after it.

I love the look on the rabbits face, looks like don't eat me please :chuckle:
