Title: Private Land Access
Post by: P Coltrain on March 07, 2017, 11:35:23 AM
Needing some advice on finding a ranch, or private property, where my Dad and I can go mule deer/elk hunting. He is getting on in years and needs some place where we can drive in, hike a little, and have a decent chance of seeing some animals.  Not looking for trophy bucks/bulls, just quality hunting. No need for a guide, but willing to pay for the access.

Looking at Oregon, Idaho, Montana, maybe Wyoming.

Any help would be appreciated!

Look at some of the outfitters websites for those states. Some offer DIY hunts on ranches where they have a lease. Some of the ranches have Landowner tags where you can contact the landowner directly and deal with them. Bear Paw could probably help you out also

If you don't mind staying in Washington you might check into this hunt for mule deer:

Good advice here.  If you are looking for free access, the only way I know that works is in person.  If you can take the time to take a road trip, and are looking for access in a future hunting year, you may find some success.  I would focus on lands that are mix of public and private, and areas not known for trophy quality.

Look at the WDFW landowner access programs, some of the landowners limit access for a quality hunt but access is free, you probably need to make reservations in advance.

If you check the websites for the F&G in the other states you will find info for their private land access programs. I know from personal experience that there are some good lands in these programs in most states.

Look at SE Montana.  Tons of BLM, Forest Service, and ranch land that is free to hunt through Montana's landowner access program.
