It's been a while but I have taken a few deer with my 30-30 here on the Eastside.
Fun fun for sure!

I have a Marlin JM stamped 336, 30/30 that I use back East for whitetails. It's very effective.
The 336 in 35 Remington is a decent deer gun as well.

I have a friend who is in his 40s been hunting since he was 8, and he told me he wouldn't shoot at a deer with a 30-30 if it was further than 50yds because it is a slow round that also drops a lot he has not had good experience with it.
He prefers 270 win FWIW.

The 30 30 has very similar ballistics to a 7.62x39 sks AK round. It's a great 150-200 yard  gun

My first rifle was a Marlin 336 cs 30-30 win. Love that rifle shot my first Blackbear in Sultin Basin back in "99" and a doe in Packwood in "98". I love shooting 170gr classic Fedrals. I don't do muck rifle hunting anymore since I got into muzzleloading but I rifle hunt Elk though. Hoping to go to wyoming and do some pronghorn hunting and use my .375 win, 32 spl, 30-30, 35 rem lever or pump 300 savage. One day I will go. Saving up points right now.

I have, but it was a carbine so kind of limited.  With a rifle and the new Lever-revolution ammo, the .30-30 has a little more appeal.

My first gun was a Marlin 336 .30-30 carbine made in 1976 I took my first three deer with it all does on youth permits. Closest shot was 75 yards furthest was about 110 only one that didn't die in its tracks was at 78 yards I nicked a log I didn't account for and popped the shot up and I spined it paralyzed her and took a standing shot to finish the job. I learned prone is not the best when you trying to shoot over the top of brush and fallen timber. All taken on the west side with 170 corelokt.

I used to hunt with a buddy who used a .32 (Winchester?) not sure, similar to 30-30.
We hunted timber in SW Washington and he killed a couple bulls with it.
We were only shooting 100 yards may in heavy second growth with thick understory.
The rifle was a slide action (Brand?).
When he shot it sounded like an automatic cause he kept pumping the lead till the critter hit the deck.
This guy was a dead shot, used to shoot beer bottles out of the air with .22 pistol.
He was in the 85% range, scary good shot.

As a side note I saw him sew up his cut finger with dental floss and a spare needle we had for fixing buttons.
Best hunting partner I ever had, tough as nails and honest as hell.

Yes I still hunt with 30-30 lever gun.  Only in the thicker areas where shots are close.  But it's iron sights, so limited by my eyesight for distance.  Which is better given the ballistics of a 30-30, keeps me from being tempted for taking too long of shots.

My family all used dad's model 94 to shoot our first deer, he still has it but we have all moved up in calibers. Hunting the wide open breaks of the snake river limits you in range. Kinda like golfing with old hickory shafts..still my favorite of all. Great timber weapon though.

Pretty sure it's the most under rated gun in anyone's arsenalwouldn't hesitate on shooting any big game animal with it out to 200 yards  :twocents:

i've got a win 30/30 that was made-according to the serial#- around 1951...shoots real well with 170 gr bullets--with the buckhorn sights and my crappy age degenerated eyesight can still hit a beer can at 80 yards...killed 2 blacktails this past couple years...nothing wrong with this caliber

I shot my 1st deer at 10 years old with a open sight 30-30. 200yd shot on a big mule deer doe. I drew a spring bear tag this year and am going to use my grandfathers Winchester 30-30 I inherited when he passed away 10 years ago. According to serial number, made in 1977.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170324/5d95cd486eefba8629c95d16fde7924f.jpg)

30-30 I set up for a thick timber/brush gun. Burris scout scope,XS sight rail, hornady leverevolution ammo. Compact, lightweight, easy to carry rifle.

My first rifle was a Winchester 30-30 & it's put away some deer & elk. Over the years, I bet the 30-30 has put millions of deer in the freezer.

I occasionally hunt with a Marlin 336 in 30/30. Used it on the West side for deer. I've brought it on Eastside hunts as a spare.

Don't know why this said elk, mean coyotes. I've never shot an elk with a .30-30

I bet that historically more animals have been killed with 30-30 and 30-06 rifles than all the other calibers combined.
The British 303 probably does but that's not a very popular rifle any more.

I've killed quite a few NH whitetails with a Sears model 94 .30-30. Never should've sold it.

I've had a couple and killed several deer with them and for some dumb reason I've sold them. Hate it when I sell guns... I think there great overall last time I used it I got super frustrated (no scope). I had a super nice 150 class whitetail at 200+ yards and I just didnt feel comfortable with the shot, I passed. Since then I carry my 243, 308 or 300 generally when deer hunting. My elk guns are my 300 and 375.

I carry one in my truck, usually hunt with a .270 win, unless visibility is an issue. Opening weekend of modern last year the weather was terrible with fog, rain down low snow up higher, I carried my .30-30, if you can only see 80 yards because of the fog or brush might as well.

My cousin loves his Marlin 336 30-30 and uses open sights. He loves having iron sights and is very accurate to about 150 yards. Most deer he shoots are 35-80 yards away so he does well with it and always gets his deer. Whatever you decide to shoot make sure the rifle fits your length of pull.

Took this one on the east side with my Marlin 336. Taken a couple others too. Love the gun!
