Title: Ticks

So I've heard some people are finding them already. :bdid: I hate the little *censored*s with a passion. Anyone seeing them yet?

Went shed hunting last weekend up in goldendale with my dad, I get a call from him later that night that he found a tick digging in on the back of his thigh. He burned it out and cleaned it with peroxide, but that wasn't enough. He ended up getting rocky Mountain spotted fever, and had to get antibiotics from the doctors. Not the best way to start the year in the woods.

Saw a post on FB about using one of those hair removing rollers.  It was covered in ticks :puke:  I plan on keeping one in the truck to catch any that are missed by the naked eye.

I haven't been out much the last couple weeks, but prior to that I picked up one on the eastside, and flicked several off in southern oregon. The dog picked up several in Oregon, but i had not treated her yet, after treatment she was clean here. If its above freezing they are moving imo.

I've had really good luck with this product. Spray my clothing down and let it dry before wearing. Gaiters seem to help as well (at least from getting under your pant legs)

Baby powder has been found responsible for a certain genital cancer in women.

As for ticks haven't seen any yet, still not convinced that isn't the cause of half my health issues. Stupid ticks.

I went for a quick walk behind my house the other day, a little bit later dishing up dinner I found one crawling up my neck.  Smallest tick I've seen, never had one on me over hear on the west side.  Hope that's not a sign of a very bad year, wonder if one more freeze would help kill them?

The little ones tend to be the bad ones. Did it look like our normal sized ones over east? The deer ticks are the bad ones.

A couple of years ago after coming back from turkey hunting I saw several on the ceiling of my truck. I sprayed it down with flea and tick killer, didn't matter every time I got in that truck I felt like I had one crawling on me. I eventually had to sell the truck (cheap) to someone that didn't care about them.

Lyme disease is carried by black-legged ticks west of the Cascade crest.

https://depts.washington.edu/ceeh/downloads/FF_Lyme_Disease.pdf (https://depts.washington.edu/ceeh/downloads/FF_Lyme_Disease.pdf)

East of the crest, there is little to worry about. After climbing Snow Creek Wall in May or June, we used to go to Gustav's in Leavenworth for burgers and beer. I remember pouring beer in an ash tray, then finding ticks (scalp, neck, you name it) and placing them in the beer bath. Great entertainment while we waited for the burgers and fries. On the west side of the slope, the first few warm (70+ degrees) days are when you generally need to be cautious, although I'm hearing from multiple sources that ticks are out early this year.

Just got back from spring bear scouting in 117 and the warden that checked us had one on his shirt walking around.  :puke:  Every time I get over to the dry side either I get them or someone around me.  Tried that tick spray and nothing for me, hope it continues that way.  Thanks for the info about which side carries Lyme diseases.

Couple simple  tricks that  help.

1. Pull your socks up over your pant legs so they can't  crawl up
2. Wear a shirt you can tuck into  your pants  with  long sleeves  and tight wrist  cuffs.

At least make  them work for  it.

Spent Sunday in the Teanaway hiking around, and have always had bad luck with ticks in the area, especially this time of year. I sprayed my clothes down with Permithrin the night before, tucked my shirt in and wore gators. No ticks on me at all, never even saw one. Sprayed the dog with flea/tick repellant before we hit the woods, and also sprayed her collar with Permithrin the night before. No ticks on her either, which is a first. My Dad had no repellant on, and found several throughout the day and on the ride home. Nothing dug in, just crawling around. I'm sold on the Permithrin treatment.

My son and I both got bit two weeks ago and brushed off about 40 of them.
Had to pull out the matches and tweezers to get it out of my rib-cage area. Felt like i got hit in the side by a hammer. I never knew they hurt that bad, but it was dug in my skin good. Head and shoulders were burrowed in my skin and back legs still out.

My pup had one on her ear after i took her to the park in Yakima.

Whatcom and Skagit counties seem pretty safe I've not seen any in the woods around here but we are wetter than most places. I've heard of several people south of olympia but nothing up here. You guys should be ok. Between the colder weather and flooding/feet of snow if they didn't freeze they drowned!

I grew up in the NE part of the country.  My days after school, weekends, and all summer were spent outside in the "country".  Ticks were an every day thing to us.  I have picked thousands off of me, had hundreds dug into me, and even had one gorge on my blood and blow up to about the size of a grape.  To me, they were similar to mosquitos, just a nuisance.  We were always told stories about Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, but I never knew of anyone who had it.  In my adult years, I heard of a FEW people getting Lyme back east, but these were second hand accounts.

If you Google search "Lyme Disease Heat Map" you will see a map of Lyme Disease in the US from the CDC https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/stats/maps.html (https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/stats/maps.html).

Same for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.  https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/tickbornediseases/rmsf.html (https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/tickbornediseases/rmsf.html)

As you can see from the maps, it is exceedingly rare in Washington State for anyone to get either of these diseases, especially when you compare WA to the states of high incidence.  It looks to me from a quick glance of the maps that there were less than 2 dozen cases combined state wide in WA in 2015.

It's just a different frame of reference when I hear people saying "I had a tick on me in 2007 after camping one 4th of July".  As I said, it was like a mosquito to us, and very little harm was done.  While it's gross to think of a bug biting you and sucking your blood, it is exactly what a mosquito does.

I just want to assure everyone that if you have a tick on you, or even a hundred, it is HIGHLY unlikely you will come down with a disease here in Washington State (according to the CDC).  You really don't have to run off to the ER if one is on you, just pick it off and watch where it bit you for a few days.  If you get a fever or the dreaded "target spot", get to a doctor, but for the sake of my insurance bills, having one on you isn't a reason to run off to an expensive ER visit!

I've never had a tick borne illness that I'm aware of, and like I said, they were so common that nobody batted an eye about them.

After weekend of turkey hunting, I had the same thing happen. I had showered, used a fine tooth comb, the works. I got to thinking and sure enough, went out and checked the truck only to find one of the little buggers on the seat cover. They had dropped off on the way home, hung out a day or two and attacked while I was coming home from work. Sneekey little buggers.

I get a couple on me every year in snohomish, skagit, and whatcom counties. In August I found one on me in the truck after bear hunting around Darrington. During deer season I had another one that got past my gaiters, up my pant leg, and embedded into my calf. Had a friend's dog get 4 or 5 on him in just an hour of walking around a clear cut near the Sauk.

This hasn't made it's way up here yet that I'm aware of, but I'm dreading the day. Tick born red meat allergy called alpha-gal. Ironically you get bit by a tick that bit a deer and you can't eat venison or any other game meat for the rest of your life.

Ticks, lol I have bags of ticks. It was the same last year. Jan, Feb, Mar it didn't matter. I can walk out my back door directly into Capital forest for a Hike and will come home with 1, 3, 5 EVERYTIME! Rain, snow, ice doesn't matter. I'll take a pic of our collection, Its ridiculous. Our pup was finally old enough to get a shot that repels them a couple weeks back and so far it's working extremely well.

In the Bonney Lake area, took a tick off my dog last week.

I had one dug into my ribs last night. I got it out using liquid soap and a cotton ball. It took about 20 minutes. Tried to sterilize with whiskey but it only made my tongue numb.

You need to drink more of it to make your body numb. What's the best treatment for dogs tick prevention?

For dogs I think the most effective treatments are the ones that you administer to the skin on the neck and back.

My wife as well came down with Lyme disease . First signs were swelling in the face and welts that we thought were caused either from food and or wine since it did start near Christmas time. Fast forward one month later Jan. 28 I woke up to her having a seizure like nothing I have ever seen before. Took her to the hospital and they wrote it off to flu so they sent us home. 20 min after being home she went into another 3-4 min seizure that really did a number on her so I rushed her straight back where we ended up staying there for 4 nights while the ran all kinds of test and scans. After asking for a Lyme test 3 times they finally did it on day 3 and low and behold she was positive. Lyme is not something to take lightly as it can do some hardcore damage to the body. I was out in the area last weekend where I know she must have got it from and the ticks where horrible even with my clothes sprayed down.

She is doing ok. She had some short term memory loss at first and her thought process was a lot slower for the first couple weeks. She is on a cocktail of meds now for both the seizures and Lyme. From here we go to the Dr.'s every 3 months for blood work till it clears her system and that's if it dose clear.

Pulled ticks off my 2 dogs for over an hour last Saturday. I had 5 "bites" which is strange because each one felt like a bee sting. Nearly everyone says you can't feel them but I sure did.  I quickly scraped them off with my fingernail. Near cle elum.

Went to Miller Ranch the first weekend in April and came home to find two on my lab the next week, one of which was blown up like a balloon it was so full of blood. Took them off, then a couple days later took another one off the dog, which I'm pretty sure had to have come from this (the West) side. Couple days later yet, we find one in the scalp of my 7 year old - it had just attached and had no blood in it, so I doubt he brought it back from EWa. Neighbor said they took one off their dog last week, too, so they are definitely out here on the Wetside. Apparently they like the cool, wet springs - kind of like we've been having up until this week.

What's the best treatment for dogs tick prevention?

I give my WPG Nexgard. This year I found the first tick on her back in late February or early March after a walk out in Vail. The Nexgard is a monthly treatment which kills the ticks once they bite the dog. I just brush her fur really well before coming in the house and then again a couple hours later. I'll usually brush out a couple dead ticks a couple hours. My dog's just a ball of hair though, so she's just a magnet for ticks. Never found a flee on her though.

This is based on a misleading "study" where a couple opossums were put in a glass cage with 100 ticks.  The number of ticks removed by grooming was then multiplied and extrapolated out to wildly exaggerate their effectiveness.  Government waste, useless grants and fake science all rolled into one.

Opossums are known to spread Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) disease to horses.  Infection causes loss of muscle function and weakness.

They do not get a free pass around here.

The study took several species of animals and locked them up with a quantity of ticks.  Opossums were more effective at grooming the pests off themselves than the other test subjects.

I am now curious if the study included, guinea fowl, turkeys, chickens?

When I had horses EPM which is essentially lethal was not worth the risk. Opossim were not welcome on my farm.  Now they get a pass as long as they stay in the wild. Skunks get the same pass.

Ticks however are awful I have found several on me after just moseying around work.  I wasnt even near the brush.  Its gonna be a wretched year.

At least most of you have someone to remove them.  Imagine one you cant reach and no one to remove it  :yike:

Permethrin is where it's at. I've used it for a couple years now, sold on it. I also spot treat gear, and my dog, with Picaradin, and have had great results. Last year after a day of shed hunting in the Teanaway, my Dad went untreated and had several ticks pulled off, including on the ride home. Never found a single one on the dog.

@Special T

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2825780/

6 species afflicted with 100 ticks each.  It's a study based on grooming behaviors.

Mice in particular are important in the life cycle of ticks.  One tactic for reducing ticks in a given area is to put out cotton balls treated with permethrin.  The mice use it to line their nests, killing the ticks that would feed on the young.

Interesting, I had not read that study. I had read an article on a study, that I posted here on HW about lowering ticks by applying some kind of tick killer on mice and squirrels. It didn't kill the animals but a brush applied anti tick stuff much like the rollers used to apply it to deer and elk.

I've seen tons of them drop off of dead hanging deer while my father and I skinned them but never had one attach... then a couple years back I was elk hunting above packwood and boom one got me on the stomach. Most of you guys say you don't feel it but damn that thing hurt when he bit! Then last year my deer out of Kapowsin had some on it, which I'm used to seeing, and later found 1 crawling up my arm. Wife went into full panic mode and a strip search commenced... which I didn't mind lol!

My co-worker picked up a tick a few weeks ago during a squirrel survey. Tick bit her mid-thigh, and she got it out after a few hours. She started getting worried when a 6" diameter red circle showed up around the bite. Turns out she got a bacterial infection from the bite.
