Check out some beginner workout routines online and follow those. Fierce 5 is a good one that I would recommend.

i'd also say it all starts with your diet.  I am not assuming yours is good or bad, but it is the number 1 place to start in my opinion.
a good well balanced diet will give you the fuel to properly train
good luck!
don't overlook rest days as well, probably one of the hardest things for me to do, but they pay dividends in the recovery and rebuilding of the muscles you just spent all week breaking down.

Don't think going to the gym will get you a better work out. I stopped going a year ago. To many distractions, to many muscle heads, waiting for equipment, people are always sick etc.....  I can stay more focused training at home , trail running etc. Mix in  body weight exercises, burpees, wall sqauts, plank to push up, low plank mnt climber's etc. You get the idea. I get more real world strength from not pushing around a bunch of weights. I still do weight training once a week or so, but everything else mostly combo body weight stuff.

That's ridiculous. getting into the structure and habit of going to a gym is huge to getting in shape (for most people). Don't discourage somebody before he even checks it out.

Sorry for offering my opinion. I won't do it again and if you like I can remove my post.

The guy is about to start getting into shape and is proud of his commitment. My point was don't rain on his parade. Gyms aren't all the same.

Not raining on anyone's parade. And yes not all gyms are the same. I simply offered up my opinion on what's worked for me. Having been in and out gyms for nearly 30 years, trying all the new cool workouts,  I found certain things work and some don't. My shoulders are trashed from heavy benching, my back has seen better days. Again just offering an opinion on workouts that work without stressing your body.

Best of luck to the OP,  trying new things is good.

It was already said but diet is key! Aside from that stick with a plan and follow it through, figure out the schedule that works for you. Me personally, 3 days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) and I'm there from about 5:45-7am. Other days of the week are for cardio and weekend adventures.

At 5'10" 180, doesn't sound like you are at all out of shape, but as most people feel there is some work that can be done to better improve your physique and what it is capable of.

Good luck and enjoy it. Don't feel like you have to lift heavy, light weights and more reps/sets work just as well.

Hey! I resemble that remark.

I can't help you on gym stuff, but these were good general fitness exercises we used to do that I have been getting back into.

Lots of work out guides, find one that is simple and you can follow. I like to run for 5-6 minutes to get my blood flow up. Then, i do push or pull exercises (chest/ticeps are push). Pick 3 for each muscle group and start with whatever weight you can (in correct form) lift 10 times. switch exercises, take a sip of water then start over Do that 3 times. IE. 10 bench press, 10 bar extensions, rest and repeat 3x.

drink lots of water and eat enough protein

I highly recommend anyone looking to improve their nutrition to check out iifym which stands for "if it fits your macros".  It is a very flexible way of eating where you stop looking at calories and basically just eat what you want as long as it fits your macros.

I think the toughest part is getting through the door.    Get in a routine. Don't make excuses.  its easy for anything to seem to have priority.

What I like about the gym versus home is it's money out of my pocket so it's harder for me to make excuses.
