After talking it over with bearpaw (Dale; Bear Paw Outfitters big dog and the head cook and bottle washer at Hunting-Washington.com) its been decided that we'll do the 2017 Elk Calling Contest as a collaborative effort between WapitiTalk.com and Hunting-Washington.com. Should be a blast! We've already got a good handful of great sponsor prizes lined up with many more to follow I'm sure. Sooo, here it is folks... the official announcement. Dust those calls off and start practicing your sound clip for the first annual WapitiTalk.com and Hunting-Washington.com Elk Calling Contest!

im getting excited now. sounds like a lot of fun!
will each contestant find out what they scored so we know what to work on?
__ out of 10 herd talk
__ out of 10 bull sounds
__ out of 10 for freestyle
-
Holy smokes. 20 seconds each is fast!
-
that is fast.
one other question, are both diaphragm and external reed elk calls allowed? or does it need to all be done with a diaphragm?
cause i can work the crap out of a hoochie mama as background music :chuckle: just kidding

Only final score tallies/rankings will be posted on the forum(s) but yes........ in past contests, I've captured and provided some of the judges comments to the contestants if they wish to receive them.

Yes sir, any human operated calls are acceptable for submission. I say that because I remember receiving a PM during one contest asking if they could use an electronic elk call for their submission, I kid you not

Just for clarification, the three 20 second intervals have to be recorded in one shot? ex: hit record, perform all three calling topics then stop recording? Trimming only allowed to cut dead "audio space" at beginning and end of recording?

Yes, that is correct; one continuous recording from start to finish (total length not to exceed 1 minute +/- 5 seconds).

I heard that the winner gets to join me on my weneha bull hunt.

Judges have been locked in and I'm starting to get the prizes already!

Flyer has been updated showing all the great sponsors for this year's calling contest. Contest window opens in a bit over four weeks from today; hope everybody is dusting their calls off and starting to work on their sound clip! This year's calling contest should be a blast!
-
I'm not the smartest cat in the woods but my fuzzy math computes that this event is starting in what, less than two weeks? Holy heck, that's right around the corner! I hope all the contestants have been working on their clip and are ready to get this thing rolling with a bang (I mean with elk sounds). RJ
-
The contest submission window opened today and runs through midnight 14 May (Pacific Standard Time). Those who submit their contest clips earlier, rather than waiting until the end of the week, will have an opportunity to win an elk call or two (raffle prizes) from none other than Phelps Game Calls. Good luck to everyone who is participating in the calling contest this year!
-
Send em in folks; the judges need some clips to listen to. As mentioned, those who submit their clips sooner than later during the submission week (8-14 May) will have a chance at some Phelps calls (raffles).
-
All right you buzzards, get your clips sent in. I don't want to flood the judges with all of them at the last minute.
-
Happy Friday to all! Tic tock, tic tock... only a few more days to get your clips in for the calling contest. As of today, I've received a handful of clips but definitely have room for more contestants! Some very, very nice prizes await those who participate and place in the top 6 finishers.
-
Any last day entries (contest window closes today at midnight, PST)? Send a clip in if you'd like.
-
All the clips are in and with the judges. We received a total of 14 entries for this year's contest. I'll try to have the results out by the middle of the week? Thanks to all who entered.
-
So half are winners! i like the odds :chuckle:
-
Final results are tallied and in. I'll get the top 6 finisher results up tomorrow.
-
Wow! What kind of teaser is that! :chuckle:

So how do you stop people from just sending a recording of some elk sounds?just thought I might ask.

I suppose if you had any doubt, you could just ask to see the video they took that they pulled the sound off of of them making the calls.
That and it is really hard to get elk to hold still and make a whole bunch of different calls rapid fire inside of a minute (cows first please, just cows...alright, now bulls... ok, all together now) :chuckle:

All right, the top six finishers for the 2017 Wapiti Talk and Hunting Washington elk calling contest have been determined. Some really good callers entered this year and scoring was very tight; in some cases, only a single point separated final standings. OK, thanks to both Hunting Washington and Wapiti Talk for staging this first ever joint operation calling contest (two of the damn finest hunting forums out there if I do say so myself). Thanks to the judges for taking the time to listen to, evaluate, and score the submissions (Elknut, Jason Phelps, Shane Donner, and Mike Ashmon); I shared in the judging duties also. Certainly thanks to all those who took the time to record and submit their entry sound clip for this year’s contest! Lastly, thanks to all the sponsor who donated such awesome prizes for this year’s contest! What do the top six finishers win? By final placement, here are the prizes for the top six finishers:
1st Place. Vortex Optics 10X42 Binos; Game Planner Maps (21” Custom Map and one year All Access Membership to the GPM Viewer).
2nd Place. Elknut Outdoors Package; Tree Stand Hunting Rocky Mountain Elk Book (John Erickson); $50 Camofire gift certificate.
3rd Place. Wapiti River Outdoors Package; Clip-Shot with smart phone adaptor; $50 BlackOvis gift certificate.
4th Place. Pnuma Outdoors IconX Base Layer top; Alpine Touch Seasoning.
5th Place. VIAM Outdoors Game Bag set; Alpine Touch Seasoning.
6th Place. Alpine Touch Seasoning.
Oh yeah, who were the top six finishers? Please join me in congratulating the following elk callers. Nicely done guys; I’ll be getting your prize packages on the way as soon as I can (some will come from me and some will come directly from the sponsor).
1st Place – Silverslinger/Wapiti Talk and Hunt WA forum; Entry #2
2nd Place – Reidus/Hunting WA forum; Entry #3
3rd Place – Nv02Cummins/Hunting WA forum; Entry #11
4th Place – Standingbird/Hunting WA forum; Entry #12
5th Place – Wapitibowman/Wapiti Talk forum; Entry #10
6th Place – NoLimitations/Hunting WA forum; Entry #13
I’ll get these top six entry clips posted up soon so folks can hear them. If any contestant wishes to receive some of the comments the judges provided on their scoresheet, let me know and I’ll send them to you. Again, thanks to all involved in our contest this year and if the interest is there, we’ll run another one next year! RJ

I was surprised as well. I was trying to talk several different buddies into doing it and they didn't think they'd win so didn't do it. Shoot- i throw my name in every hat I can when the prizes are good.
