Title: Idaho 10/10A Wolves
Post by: Naches Sportsman on March 29, 2017, 10:38:45 PM
How many of you guys have seen wolves over in GMU 10 and 10A?  I am starting to some research and it looks like there are wolves in the area. My goal is to have an attempt at killing one this year and will have plenty of time to look for them.

I hunted deer in 10A two years ago out of Pierce and we saw some good wolf sign but no wolves. One of them appeared to be huge by his tracks. And that was within a mile of Pierce.

See pages 11, 27, 31 for pack locations! Names of packs normally correlate to a local mountain or geographic feature they inhabit. Take a long range rifle, glass the highest points you can see on ridges right at daylight, if you have a choice between shooting a collared wolf and a wolf with no collar, leave the collared wolf and shoot the wolf with no collar, IDFG spends a lot of money to get wolves collared and must do it to keep them off the endangered species list. Good luck!

Unit 10 I found a dead wolf and saw one in like 3 days wolf hunting a few years back. Driving the road at last/first light isn't a bad way to find them they travel the roads hard. You'll see a set of tracks jet off into the brush and come back onto the road a ways down the road pushing game onto the road. Very smart

I would hunt unit 10 and also the border of 10 and 10a

We usually hunt those units and hear wolves, see fresh wolf tracks and see wolves.  With this years winter kill I figure our annual deer hunt is going to be a Dog hunt.

Hunted 10A last year, had some fresh snow one morning and cut a set of woof tracks on an old logging road but never actually saw any dogs.  Some of the other guys camping in the same area saw a couple right at daylight one morning but couldn't get a shot.

My  :twocents: on wolf hunting that area, if you don't see fresh animal sign, you aren't in the right area for wolves.  Especially in 10, which is big country.

I'll probably be running one bear bait down in 10 this year.  I'll keep you posted on what I see and hear when I'm down there.

If you're serious about killing some wolfs you may want to consider joining this organization http://foundationforwildlifemanagement.org/story.html. They provide expense reimbursement for harvest and the amount varies from $500 for most areas and up to &750 I believe in some areas. You also may be able to get in contact with some folks with good knowledge of that area.

This is a good org to join, I belong just to help them find these reimbursements and encourage more wolf hunting.

Foundation for Wildlife Management sounds like a great organization. These guys should link up with the RMEF and SCI Chapters in Washington State and Oregon and sell Wolf Trapline Adventures. Wouldn't it be worth it for them to take an elk hunter along with them if he were 'paying the freight' for the trappers? They should try to donate one wolf trapping trip for each RMEF auction and split the proceeds with the Chapter to raise money for both organizations.  Their line should be, "If you hunt elk, you ought to be doing something to control wolves.  Along with your elk trophies you should have a wolf pelt on the wall at your house or cabin. Why not have fun doing the right thing for wildlife?" They should also contact each hunter who buys a Governor's Elk Tag and ask them (they are rich guys) for a donation and invite them to come along on a wolf trapping trip.

It seems like outfitting isn't allowed for trapping, if true maybe it's time to change that rule.

They have a fund raising banquet that they auction off days on the trap line with some of the seasoned trappers. It's also a good way to get in touch with more folks that have a decent idea where packs are hanging out as most folks don't hold wolf intel to themselves like deer and elk.

How far into 10 were you able to get?  I have been itching to drive down and check out snow/road conditions, but have been holding off.  PM me if you prefer.  Thanks!!

I was just over there last week Thurs-Sun, meant to send ya a message before we headed over but forgot. Glad you finally got to see one, now time to lay one down! We saw one fairly fresh set of tracks but did see a ton of fresh cat sign!

Had a  3 week stretch where the wolves were shutting the coyotes up at night. They ran the coyotes out for a bit.

Another season of scouting is in the books. Had to cut the fun short this summer due to education goals.

Found a lot of wolf crap, seen a lot of tracks, heard wolves, Talked to locals about wolves, and had co workers give me some valuable wolf Intel including gps locations of the drainage with most wolf activity last winter.

Still open for pm's if anyone has information.

I have a favorable class schedule this fall and plan on hitting the ground hard once the snow flies. I'm definitely feeling like luck is on my side and this is the winter I'll shoot one.

Well the time to get serious has arrived. Finally have a weekend freed up. Headed down to check cams and do some fishing tonight and then head for the steep part of the rain forest in the morning. I was told bulls are talking so wolves should be out and about.

Seen a lot of sign and heard wolves where I'm headed to back in July so that's a start. Also had a pilot that was gracious enough to give me some coordinates of where he seen wolves this summer.

Hunt bugling elk.  My experience this year in Id is elk bugle, wolves come and kill them.  Elk shut up.  Hell they surround hunt camps and howl.  If wolves are better I hate to see em at their worse.  It really was frustrating.  Kill em all!

Shot 2' under one this morning at first light. There were 3 together. Off to a different area!

They are where the elk are! Right on top of the bulls!

If anyone saw any or heard any over here the last few weeks, let me know. With all the Washington plates, someone had to have come across one.

Going to hit it hard after my elk hunt ends.

I was over in 10A elk hunting end of last month and there are plenty of wolves running around there. I saw 2 one morning and had 6 to 8 working around me every morning for over a week. Lots of wolf scat with plenty of elk fur in it. I was hunting up by elk river area. Buddy of mine lives there and he got a shot at one a couple of weeks ago.  They are not sticking around for photo opportunities so getting a shot at them is tough.  I bought a ICOtech predator call when I got home and plan to get back there and dedicate some time to just hunt them.

Thanks for the info, I've heard some reports of wolves in that area too, but haven't explored much east of elk river. Just finally learned everything west of it.  The wilderness study area is where I've seen the most sign around here.

Pretty sure I know who you're talking about. I know a guy who's spent about the last month living out of his wall tent and he has shot 3.

A buddy's brother has shot 1 and trapped 2 up north.

My buddy and I will be making some trips into the unit and up the highway 12 corridor after the new year. I wish I had more time, but have to take advantage of the time I have.
