Largest blacktail spike
20 1/2 length
8 3/4 base
-
Any reason why you say Blacktail?
-
Sure looks like a spike elk shed to me
-
I agree but I have never seen an elk in this area in 25yrs of hunting this spot
-
Elk
-
Looks to me like the base is over 2" it's an elk sound to me like elk have moved into your spot
-
Negative
Deer antler
8 3/4 circumference
-
The length says elk.
The color and location of the eyeguard says deer.
Interesting find.
-
Let's see some more angles!
-
I understand your disbelief I felt the same way.
It was my first find this spring only 3 inches protruded from the moss . I lifted it up and it justkept coming. Believe me or not bit I saw a buck at least 150 in the general area 2 years ago
-
 Elk!!!
-
Elk!
-
Elk for sure.......
-
So the experts say elk .
How do you confirm the species of an antler (mule deer blacktail whitetail elk)?
I've spent quite a bit of time in this area and have never seen an elk or sign of an elk. I wish there were elk here it would save me some gas money. When I get time I'll try and find the other side.

:yeah:

What is the general area of the state you found the shed in?
-
Oak creek ...........
Just kiddng green belt in piece county
-
Any reason why you say Blacktail?
I have heard that the smell is what gives it away
-
Old revert buck maybe. Hard to say for sure from here.
-
nothing about that is blacktail. I lived in pierce county and theres elk. nice spike shed non the less. don't find those real often
-
ELK!
-
Elk are in a lot of green belts in pierce county, rosscrazyelk saw some cows standing by the welcome to Bonney lake sign at the top of 410 just a while ago.
-
Elk for sure

So how are you experts coming to these conclusions.
Somebodies elk sightings
Somebodies opinion
I've hunted this area for many years
How can you tell
The length is obviously absurd if it's a buck and this is why I shared it with you otherwise I would not have posted a pic of a spike bull shed
-
The base and shape.

Just take that thing to the Sportsmans show to get scored next year and show all these non believers.

I wouldn't say they've moved in. Though it looks like you had one wander through a year or so ago...

It may be possible but the possibility is slim
It's hard enough finding any b tail shed let alone a stray elk
-
Where I hunt mule deer "there are no elk". However, several years ago a guy found a matched set from a 6x6 bull. About ten years before that someone I know saw a bull in the area. Those elk had a lot farther to go. One of the places I hunt blacktail "there are no elk". Except every once in awhile someone gets one on their trail camera. My point is I think that a antler that looks exactly like an elk antler is probably more likely to be an elk antler than some weird, once in a lifetime freak unicorn blacktail deer antler. Especially since there are a lot of elk in pierce county. But I guess I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

:yeah:
Unless you're on the peninsula(?), odds seem much better it's from an elk. If so, then maybe it could be that freaky BT.
-
That's the point of the post if you think this is an elk antler that's fine. It's just not what I think and the reason for posting a freaky spike buck. Once again how does one determine the species of an antler. The sportsmans, show measurers don't have a way.
I remember 15 or so years ago a guy claimed he had a monster blacktail and had it scored only to find out it was a mule deer. He had his pic in wa,oregon magazine with a,ruler inside his rack.
-
If it makes you feel better to call it a blacktail horn then do so.
The more I look at it I think it's a Columbia Whitetail Shed. That's just my opinion. ;)
-
Going point it probably is a wandering Columbia whitetail
-
Wandering upside down elk deer.
-
Love that shed, any shed found in wet side is a awesome find.
If that green belt is located around JBLM, their is more elk showing up in that area every year.
;)
-
Shed hunting is definitely fun
Glad to share such a unique find
Not sure about the elk though where have you seen them :archery_smiley:
-
had a bull run across the road off 200th in graham not far from meridian before! my folks live in graham by the high school and have cows from time to time in there yard and off the road they travel!
-
Great
-
I think its most likely a freak deer shed too. It would be a weird looking elk spike shed. around where I live the spikes would be a lot thicker all the way up and the big base is strange also. Thanks for posting it cool find regardless!

I agree.
-
It is an elk shed.....the chances of a spike wandering into an area in Pierce County not known for elk is fairly high.............the chances of a blacktail buck regressing and then putting all the energy into a long spike is extremely low.....when they regress they may go from a 3 or 4 pt to a 2 pt but the antler shape stays mostly the same...
Good find....
-
.

.
Not even close to the same size. But nice googling.

This is better than the Jerry Springer Show when they announced who the father was. My first thought it is a benchleg unicorn

Exactly. I think Occam's Razor applies in this instance.

Jackelope, that photo was taken just on the east side of the cascade crest right?
-
Someone should point OP to the bobcat link so that he knows this is all in good fun.
-
It's appears to be from from a branched antler bull elk that wandered up and over Snoqualmie Pass from GMU 334.
-
Also think elk,but very possible of anything, when I see it I see knife handle.seems big spikes work good for that.
-
For comparative analysis, here are some pierce county green belt sheds as well. Found on private property that holds elk most of the year.

I don't know if your shed is an elk or a deer, but it's a cool find though.

Cool video
Hate to battle that buck
-
Take it to a biologist if you want to prove some folks wrong 😎 older bucks tend to revert sometimes the base has me thrown off as well
