Title: Lazer dot scope for dads crossbow, ideas?
Post by: trophyhunt on April 06, 2017, 11:38:02 AM
My dad received a permission letter from Wdfw to put a lazer dot scope on his crossbow, we are looking for something simple for him to use and not expensive.  Something he can turn on and then look for the dot/light on the animal, any ideas?

I'm wondering if a simple lazer pen attached to the bow would work?

I don't think you actually want a laser.

It may be that hunters with disabilities are exempt, but I've never heard of anyone being to do it legally. The odds of being cited could be significant and while the citation would not stand up if he has a letter, it would probably need to be challenged in court.

https://app.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=220-414-010

(1) It is unlawful to hunt deer or elk with the aid of infrared night vision equipment or with laser sights (not to include range finders) capable of projecting a beam onto the target, while in possession or control of a firearm, bow and arrow, or crossbow.

I definitely want to read the letter myself before we buy anything, he is a disabled hunter and has had a waiver for scopes on his crossbow in the past.

Good luck. I hope he can find something to hunt with.

Legal or not is one question, why use a laser is another.

In full light conditions a laser beam projected onto a target is going to be washed out and not visible even at very short ranges.

well, I'm not sure than?  I guess I just assumed it would help him see the aim point?  He had a big bull close a couple years ago and couldn't see the crosshairs on the scope, missed a 350 bull at 40 yards.  Do you guys think the red dot scope advertised above is better?  Thanks

@ crossbow ranges a 5 minute red dot is probably going to be his best bet.

Yeah, I think a red dot accomplishes the same thing and holds up to day light better than a laser.  I have a laser bore sighter, it puts out a strong beam that works well inside and at short ranges but I have to wait for dusk to get a good check at ranges beyond 20 yards.

I also own that cheap BSA Red dot that I posted above.  I’ve had it for years and have used it on many different guns, does a great job in all lighting conditions.

:yeah: That would be my thoughts as well. The green laser do show up slightly better in full light then the red lasers. I think they best thing would indeed be a red dot type sight. If that is legal for him I would give that a go.

Great info guys, I'm going to order that bsa then.  Thanks a bunch, really appreciate it!  Now hopefully his 18 disabled elk points will get him drawn and he can get another chance at his first bull !

Another question, do I need to buy special rings with it?

Hope so as well and best of luck to him in the draw.

One tip with the red dots, keep the lenses very clean. In lower light the light from the dot will highlight any dust on the lenses and make it more fuzzy. So it might be harder for him to focus.

I didn't look at the one posted. Most red dots have a built in base that will clamp to a rail if he cross bow has a rail you should be able to lock it right down on the rail.

That one has a 3/8 Weaver style attachment.  - You might need a riser, I don't know what's on his CB.

What does he have for a crossbow?  I think I may have a scope mount base laying around for an Excalibur.  Most take Weaver/Picatinny style rings.

Not sure of the brand of cb he has, I will get it from him and see.

Way simpler, cheaper & more reliable to use a red dot sight.

So I received the BSA scope, but it won't fit on the crossbow rail.  Do you guys know which mount i need to buy?  Thanks
