If you've got a good tip, share it here.
80% of successful hunting is simply being there and being alert, so:
a) hunt from legal light until legal dark.
b) bring what you need to stay comfortable and mentally aware.
For me, this includes:
2 qts of Gatorade and enough food.
extra socks, a spare T-shirt and a warm sweater.
a flashlight I can hold in my mouth with spare batteries.
a map and a compass.
-
Patience
-
Use your eyes. Look thru stuff. Do not expect to see a deer standing in the open, on a ridge, with the sky as a backdrop.
Slow down and hunt.
Use the wind to your advantage.
Slow down and hunt.
Use your binoculars.
Slow down and hunt.
-
Sight your rifle in before opening day, I hate opening morning and someone is blasting away (sighting in the gun) because they either missed a shot or procrastinated.
I'm also a fan of the headlamps now, they are more convenient than the flashlight in the mouth.

have fun...don't worry about it and don't get pissed if you're not seeing the right animals...take what all the other guys said above and roll with it. you'll find em!!!
after 2 days of seeing nothing but does and fawns last year...i really started getting frustrated. this will never happen again.
-
oh yeah...and don't forget your tag!
-
Don't forget at least two rolls of TP!!
-
2 rolls...holy crap.
or you could just watch what you eat the night before :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
lay all your gear out infront of you before you leave the house.
dont forget your change of socks haha(smdave last year)
-
Need to pack the camera............
-
... With extra batteries....
-Josh, I like crude oil coffee in the AM hunting. Works like Drano...
-
Never hunt a stand if the wind is wrong, no matter how sweet a stand it is.

I don't need two rolls but making sure that you have some is a good idea. My old nickname "one sock" was for the very reason that I forgot to bring some. :chuckle:

Be on top looking down and if you see a buck bedded don't be quick to shoot it. More than likely there are bigger ones just out of view. Take your time and glass the surrounding area.
-
dont miss

dont forget your orange
-

ALCOHOL AND HUNTING DON'T MIX!!!!! SAVE THE BOOZE FOR WHEN THE GUNS ARE UNLOADED AND TUCKED AWAY!

Many good suggestions here. I would add a couple more.....
1) Have a map of your area and make a basic game plan. Be flexible and willing to modify your plans based on changes in the field. Be able to go with the flow. Trust your senses.
2) Set some sort of a standard or bench mark as to the type of animal you're looking for and then stick to it.
3) As the season winds down, don't panic. Be patient!
4) Sometime during the season, take a youngster hunting, even for just one afternoon.
5) Share your stories and pictures! Hero shots are a must, but don't forget a few scenery photo's, pictures of your camp, and your hunting partners.
Good Luck to all this season!

You are 100% right. They do not mix and it is irresponsible. I am hoping that the above post was said in jest.
-
I didn't take the comments about the flask too seriously.
Even so - there's nothing any one of us could do about it if in fact someone did decide to do that. Also, I don't think it necessarily means that we condone that behavior. I would say it is a poor decision to say the least. To each his own. I'm sure anyone who might become intoxicated out "hunting" wouldn't be any fun to hang out with anyway. At the same time I remember my heavy drinking days and a little flask would have been barely enough to wet my lips. I don't drink any more.

One for the car, one for the pack. Trust me.

But it is nice to have when its time to gut your animal and haul it.

:o Oops almost forgot the most important hunting tip!
Initiate Family Appeasement Plan.
This plan may include; flowers for the wife at work, treats left around the home, a gift certificate for dinner out on you-whiile you are away, a nice card mailed to the family as you leave town, even a wild goose chase style game where a single note left inconspicuously out when you leave leads family members on a wild goose chase looking for the end prize. Or, mail the starting clue, so the game starts days later...
The point is this, if you are married....you need to think about those who hold the home fort down while you are away. Do something special, this goes a long way....
-
Stay optimistic. I am lucky because I don't get discouraged if I am not seeing a whole lot of animals. I expect something to hop up at any time.
And, Gold Bond! I was let in on this little gem during our elk hunt last year and boy, I will never spend another night in the woods without it. Simply amazing :chuckle:
-
Don't forget the cigars and kill bottle (Crown Royal)............
-
makes sittin under that tree a mile from camp at o'dark thirty a little easier
If you'd forget the flask all together, you could be sitting under a tree 3 or 4 miles from camp...where'd you'd have left all the hunters in the dust and have the place all to yourself.
8)
leave the booze for around the campfire in the evening after the guns are put away for the night if you gotta have it at all.
-
That's why it is a kill bottle............after the game is in the tree and only for after it is in the tree................no drinking here while hunting and really can't stand cigars.
Can you say Celebration.
-
know what your shooting at make sure its what you thought it was. use your binoculars when you check out game i have had too many guys check me out from across a canyon with there rifles that pisses me off.
-
My biggest piece of advice is patience... Patience has let me see some incredible animals. I have sat in a tree stand for 11 hours straight. My reward? A missed shot on a 6 x 7 whitetail. Made my whole year to see that buck.
-
I just started hunting out of a treestand last yr & after about 3.5 or 4 hrs I just can't handle sitting there much longer,My mind just starts coming up with all sorts of weird things. Do you guys read, listen to headphones, eat or what? :dunno:
-
Unless you smell like a tree, mind your wind! Also, a Keystone or two back at camp always seems to bring good luck.
-
1. Have Patience and perseverance!
2. Hunt slowly and use you binos alot.
3. Take a tip from the Boy Scouts.... "Be Prepared". Use good equipment and clothing. Organize it and take care of it.
4. Have fun.... its not a contest.
-
Modern season...haven't done a modern season since I lived in Alaska.
Comments all seem to be on base. Patience is the rule in any hunting fishing acitvity. If you are out there for killing a fish or animal go to a farm and buy a cow.
Cigars are great in camp. I don't indulge in alcoholic drinks either but I do not mind if my friends indulge in camp and the day is over for them otherwise leave the booze alone.

Wake up at 9:00 take my time grab my pack and gun , walk in to "the spot" and bust a bruiser blackie at 11:00 am. Thats the kind of luck I wish I had!
