Title: Looking at new rifle stocks
Post by: Bofire on April 11, 2017, 07:42:02 PM
I have an old rifle and am looking at new stock for it. Mcmillan makes one, drop in complete for about $500.00 Bell and Carlson all set up is about $300.00. HS Precisio does not make one, Manners stocks were not impressive.
Any input??
Carl

I've never been able to afford one but the McMillans are considered the best by a lot of guys. It's what I would buy if I wanted the best. There may be better but not for the money. That said I have a Bell & Carlson on my Weatherby Vanguard that I picked up on eBay for around $175, and I've been happy with it.

If you can find someones to try is best. manners will send you a couple demos to try.

If you are shooting prone watchout for any heel drop.

I went with Manners Eh1 as I needed high comb.   Adjustable game scout would be good.

I have a couple B&C that have held up for 25 years.

McMillan and B&C Medalist both come "drop in" for my gun. The B&C has an aluminum bedding block, the McMillan has standard bedded in recoil lug. Hunter sporter type stocks, no vertical hand grip or fat fore arms. just $200.00 difference in price.

I have seen a lot of "drop-in" stocks need a lot of work  :twocents:

If it for a Remington I would look into grayboe stocks. They are McMillans production stocks. Same price as bell and Carlson but I think better quality. I have a rifle being built with one now.

Bell and Carlson are a good stock for the money, I have a few. Only one that wasn't drop in was for a three position safety vs a two. No big two minutes with a Dremel. :twocents:

Get it bedded !  Aluminum bedding block is fine but still needs skim bedding.

I am very happy with the McMillan I put on my lefty Remington 700 in .270.  The fit was spot on with no gaps and solid as a rock.

This thread would be so much better if we only knew the rifle in question.

If we knew the make of rifle this would be easier. Have you checked out Boyds gun stocks? Base stocks run about $127.00, add ons extra. The make stocks for a lot of rifles types. I have four and really like them. One on a Winchester, one on a Remington, one on a Mouser and one on a Ruger.

Its an old Interarms Mark X, Whitworth action. squared and trued , douglas air gauge barrel, timney trigger. I have never cared much for the syn. stock the builder used. The stock must be synhthetic. I really wanted a compare between the B&C and McMillan, "is the McMillan worth $200.00 more than the B&C?

Yes x2.
I have McMillan's , HS Precision's , Manners and a B&C. The B&C does not compare to any of the others.

Carl, what style of stock does Mcmillan offer as a drop in for your action? As you probably know, there are sporter, tactical and hybrid styles. Some are great for general purpose hunting while others are best suited for range and target use. I have a few Mcmillan stocks and can offer you my opinions on what might work best for your intended use. Send me a PM if you'd like. Ron

Check out Grayboe Stocks.  Made by McMillan or started by a former employee of McMillan, I have heard they are very good and cost $300-400.

I want a sporter stock. OK here is the deal. A friend, a very close friend built this rifle for me in 1972. It shoots like crazy but more, its got Karma. All my biggest Bulls, Bucks and Bear, tons of coyotes have fallen to this rifle, Its been to Canada, Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Oregon, Wyoming and Colorado. Kills everything I point it at.
That said I have always disliked the stock, I had it bedded twice ( shoots real well now) but it is ugly and very flexible and noisy.
So I think I'll buy the McMillan and see what I can do with this Old Girl.

I don't really think the McMillans are that much better than the B&C in most applications. I can't think of a single gun I've owned would have shot better if it had been in a McMillan stock. If the McMillan has a specific feature or style that the B&C doesn't then it may be better, but if you can find a B&C that you like I'd go for it and never look back.
