Title: Big Eastern down!
Post by: MerriamMagician on April 17, 2017, 07:26:19 PM
After 3 days of tough hunting I got a good setup on this bird. Snuck in to his roost way before light and got the dekes out. He put on a good gobbling show then pitched straight into the spread. Immediately went into full strut and advanced angrily toward the jake decoy. He was only on the ground for about 30 seconds before I gave him a rude awakening. He's a dandy, I'm getting a full body mount on this big boy!

Nice! Can I ask what time he flew down from his roost? I've been watching an eastern and it's been like an hour after daylight. Is that normal?

:yeah:  If you have an eastern already this year, you may as well go for the slam!

Congratulations.  Those Easterns are special and my favorite to hunt.  Altogether different than hunting the other two subspecies we have.  Nice bird.

I have seen em stay in the trees for hours. It depends on the a lot of factors. Rain, predators, how hard of a day he had the day before. I have seen em stay on a limb and fan out trying to attract the hen that is only branches away...

Nice bird. Wasn't that you that I talked to on opening morning???? On your bike, I came out behind a tree with my bow and told you there was an eastern right in front of me.. I heard the tom and let you go after him. It sure looks like you or your look alike and the clearcut looks like the one I was going to.  If not than you must have been near by,, looks like the same bird... :)

Huh. I didn't know that. Thank you.

For some reason I thought they always came down around sunrise.

You let another guy go after him. You are a good dude..
I have been trying to  get the eastern for going on 5 years and still haven't seen one. If I heard one I am pretty sure I could not let another guy go after it.
You sir are amazing , hats off
