Likewise - your dad is a great guy.  You and your brother are lucky guys.  I saw a few photos of the hunt and there were some wonderful memories made!  I need to come by the house and measure up some of his mule deer.  I heard you or your brother took a nice buck as well (can't remember).

IF there is any animal I don't have a clue on field judgeing it would be rams.  I just know I would be stoked to tag the one critter.  I know he doesn't measure up to that other fellow we have been seeing on here, but I'd be dang happy to bust this one.

Thats kind of an understatement.  I am finding myself excited to see piles of *censored*.  I used to think to myself how many piles of *censored* do I have to see on average per shed.  A deer craps several times a day but only loses 2 antlers in a year.......then there is one buck to ten does crapping so ......

You have to think about something out there...... :chuckle:

This year, even the crap piles are far and few between. :(

Yeah Brandon, there and around Moses for a bit.  Too much snow everywhere else, that and trying to give them a break.  I've seen a TON of last years winterkills, but not much for fresh this year.

I'm getting my butt kicked.   I average about 70 sheds per year.  High of about 150, low of about 30, but I am usually right in the 70 range. NONE so far this year.  I thought this might be one of those entertaining threads, but I'm not finding crap.  First of all, Mr. doom and gloom.  Its the least amount of deer I have ever seen in the Methow.  Worst I have ever seen it.  Then I went and killed one with my truck Saturday morning.  Five of them pounced in the road off the bank.  A little bit of fancy footwork and I managed to only smack one of them.  Hell they are so frail that smacking one at 50+ didn't hardly leave a dent. THere is a lot of winter left too

Thanks for putting it into perspective.  I couldn't believe it, Banks lake is sSTILL Iced up.  Is spring coming anytime soon?  I can't get to the muleys bones yet, the whitetails are God knows where and the moose bones are still under two feet of snow and the elk are still packing.  LOL   Hell, didn't even see any wolf sign.   Lenore had the beginnnings of the floatilla.  You could almost cross the Yakima on driftboats if you timed it right.  Must be the Blue wing olives......I guess it could be March brown. :dunno:    On a good note, only one part fell off my truck this trip, and I only heard Obamas name about 10 times on the radio.

I guide on the Yak, probably one of those boats you saw the other day. Its still too early for BWO's and March Browns, we're in the height of the Skwala Stone hatch right now, good dry fishing and even better nymph fishing! 65 degree days like today help alot too.

Post by: boneaddict on March 21, 2009, 06:04:29 AM
I wondered about the stones, but thought we might be too late for them.  Those are fun to fish.  Pretty crowded for a weekday, but it was the first 60 degree day of the year.  Wind was horrible in out on the stretch/flats  but it didn't seem so bad in the canyon.

The wind on friday was HORRIBLE. If you could get out of the wind and get a dry to float well against the bank you pretty much got a rise. We did well with 26 rises all day and probably 15 fish to the boat, great considering the conditions.

I won't waste your time saying how horribe the deer herd is in the Methow.....where I used to see 300 deer in the basin, there was 35.  I saw about 100 for the day when I usually see 1,000.  OH WELL.  There has to be a few bones out there....

Compared to gas money and miles on my truck I am not finding squat.  i took my daughter out this Friday.  She hasn't found one yet.  Her little sisters both have.  I had a sure thing going and thanks to a fellow member an awesome spot to take her.  Moose and whitetails were on the doquet.  We were ONE DAY too late.  4 wheelers had gridded the area tearing it to shreds.  MAN THAT PISSES ME OFF.  By the time I was done with the morning, I was so mad at people on 4 wheelers, there wasn't a good one of ya out there. LOL  Goes to show how a few bad apples ruin it for everyone.  By the time the day was done I WANTED THE WOODS CLOSED to all 4 wheelers.  They tore the hell out of it. LAZY *censored*S.  Anyway, If I'd have taken her two days earlier I would have had a nice set of moose bones to tease Rob with, and a nice whitetail rack.  They took the skull off of a winterkill, jawbones were there but no skull.  It was a dandy so can't blame them for that.  Anyhow what I did do fo the day was my daughter got to see her first moose, a young bull.  I got him to grunt at us, that was fun.  She also had a nice day hiking and got to see some western Bluebirds which she had never seen before. :bash:

Nice pics Bone, sucks about the 4 wheelers. I'm with you, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they locked the gates and banned them.

I went for a hike near Potlach, Idaho yesterday.  I walked in two miles and lone behold there were three quads parked at the beginning of an old skid road.  >:( I decided to walk some of the clear cuts, and noticed four wheeler tracks all over.  I hate lazy people.  :bash:

They were behind locked gates (ROAD CLOSED)...they went around them.  Thats what really pissed me off.  Then they tore the hell out of the Laurel and left big ruts digging in the mud so that they could climb up and down the hill.

I just don't understand these lazy *censored*s!! I understand it's all for one and one for all on public land but when you start taking motorized vehicles on closed areas then its uncalled for. Would be nice to catch them and turn the asses in. I ran into the same thing up the Teanaway where the surrounding land owners thought they had the right to take their four wheelers on closed property. :twocents:

As state to duck before, just before you give up.  Drove 5 hours then started hiking.  Three inches of fresh snow.  Gotta love it.  I started looking for tines and then let the sun do its work.  I found 5 muley bucks up in about 4 feet of snow.  Can't wait for it to melt.  After checking out several of my most productive a favorite spots without finding a DAMN thing, I was about to give up.  I was going to spike out and spend a couple nights, but it just wasn't worth missing my family over.  I started heading home when I figured HECK I will check out that small spot for 30 minutes.  Its been pretty productive in years past.  I immdediately found a small two muley shed.  I kept climbing.  I skipped this spot last year and am now KICKING MYSELF.  I looked up and my heart quickened.  Its taking more and more these days to get me fired up......

First shed of the day.......sometimes a guy can get real lucky.  It was a nice 4 point that was about 4 years old.  I left it on the hill because I was on a mosnter hike.  I had to really watch the snow conditions and almost got caught.  It was over 4 feet deep in alot of places and post holing was not a good option.

I would have to put them down to pick up the tape measure.  I'm not sure I've ever seen a typical rack with so much universal mass.   I'll get some better shots of them and some measurements.

Yeah Brandon, not liking those tracks.  Pretty *censored* if you ask me.  Its not like its not a popular place.

I would rather not have the late season deer permits until these bucks are more established.  The deer herd in the east cascades is just now showing some signs of bouncing back since the late '90's.

Thats a nice set.  I love how these boys carry their mass.  Something about benchlegs and mass.  I know reddawgs gotten a couple with those characteristics.

Did you come over this spring and do your big spring hike?

I wish I had paid closer attention to the area when it was permit only.  I bet some were allowed to grow up a bit.

I did an overnighter the last weekend of March and a day trek April 1, but no sheds were found.  During my two day trip I saw bulls still carrying their antlers, but no big ones, mostly five points and raghorns.  The second  trip I saw some bulls without, but couldn't find anything.  The cold spring delayed the green-up and it is my opinion the elk stayed low on the private ground, out in the sage and didn't move into the area like they have in the past.  I haven't been able to get away as much as I would like, too.  Glad you started to pull something out after all your trips.  I'll find something sooner or later.

I sure struck out on the big bulls, but am happy with my bench sheds.

stretched the tape.  One bone is 72+ and the other is 70+ with almost no deductions except all on the one side.  Net was 140.5 so with an 18.5 inside, a solid 159 buck.    Pretty solid for a bench.   Throw in all that mass he really doesn't get credit for.   Only his g2s hold him back.   A 160 buck I'd dump in a heartbeat.

It would be bad ass if you could find him. The way I see it is that he is your buck. No way I could find a buck like that.

I'm guessing some wolf ate well, or an unlucky bowhunter is kicking himself....Now I just need to wrangle permsission to keep it, hopefully before the squirrels find it.   Still a bit of velvet. Lots of moss on the bases.

I guess I am about done for the year.  This was the worst year I've had since I started this hobby.  Oh well, a few thousand calories burnt and some pics for some friends.  I guess its fitting that this is how I am ending, since its how I started.  Yet another you won't find this fall.

Man dude, I hunted my butt off.   I beat the 4wheelers to this hill.  There was too much snow in a belt keeping them from it.   Its odd the deer even winter here(the snow gets DEEP) but they do.   There was less sign than I thought there would be but there were a couple yards.  I think the elk may have pushed them out.  I should have found more.  The only thing I can think of is the elk, which aren't usually there. The last three years the wheelers beat me to it.   At least I felt good about that.   The green wasn't bad up there as the snow just left.  Down in lower elevations though its starting to be a pain.
