Hey guys,
Currently I'm driving a '15 Tacoma with the access cab... I like my truck, however with the recent addition to my family and we're planning on having another... I've found that riding with a kid and my wife in the truck is cramped to say the least. I couldn't imagine sitting over there for a 4 or 5 hour car ride. I've thought about trading in and getting the double cab, but the cost of these things is getting rediculous. I wouldn't be willing to pay more a month than I currently am, and getting the bigger one even used would put me over.
I realize they're typically tree hugger mobiles, but I've been toying with the idea of getting a Subaru. It would probably be cheaper a month on top of having more room and getting better gas mileage. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience using them for hunting?
For the record, so far in my hunting experience I haven't had any issue getting where I want to go in my truck with stock tire size and no lift.

I love Subaru wagons. The best forum for deciding the good bad and ugly on them is the Ultimate Subaru Message Board USMB tons of great knowledge and used it extensively when I HAD my Bratt.

My sister has had two Foresters, currently has a 2015. Neither had any major mechanical problems.
The ground clearance of a stock F150 4x4 is 9.4 inches.
The ground clearance of a stock Subaru Forrester is 8.7 inches.
They are good vehicles

I used to encounter a guy often in a Subaru Outback in Central Wa during the early part of upland bird season a few years back. He had his GSP's with him and would drive that rig anywhere I took my Jeep Cherokee. Granted it was always dry conditions. I know another guy with an Outback and he uses it during archery elk season on both sides of I-90 in the Cle Elum area. It can be done.

I did some googling and found a few anecdotes regarding hunting use but nothing close to home... at least from what I could find. I'd like to hear from some folks about using them around here/ID/MT

I had a 2007 Subaru Outback and it was a great vehicle. It handled better in snow than my truck does. I was going to replace it with a new one as my daily driver, but then decided I wanted to go with a less expensive option on a new vehicle. Picked up a Honda Civic for the daily driver for work.
-
Two years ago I bought my wife a new Forester for Valentines day, we both love that car. When she's ready for a new car again I might keep her old forester for hunting, it gets around super good and has good clearance.

What kind of info do you mean? What kind of price range? The older ones can be purchased cheap, can fix most anything with a hard harbor freight metric wrench set, vice grips, 2 specialty sockets and adjustable plyers. I'm betting a gen 3 87ish to mid 90s can be had for a few grand and you could keep your truck. I don't have a lot of experience with the newer ones but everyone raves about them. Cable chains and a 4k lb winch you can go anywhere.

I have a 2009 Forester for a company car. I have not been a fan due to the road noise. I have had the normal head gasket issues to the tune of 3 grand. If you buy used make sure that's been taken care of. If you buy new pay close attention to the road noise. My family car is Toyota Highlander and there is a huge difference in driving comfort. I also only average 21 mpg but I drive it pretty hard so your MMV.

what year is your highlander? my wife has an '06 and the road noise is BAD! worse than my '05 tundra. but her radio is better so we just crank it... ;)

2012 I do have better tires on it as well so maybe that's part of it.
-
I'm on my 3rd Subaru. I drive the pass daily for work so not having to chain up is great. You can't get these cars to slip even in the worse conditions. Pre 08 Subarus have head gasket issues. You will have to fix at some point. Subaru fixed that so hopefully my '15 is good to go. Mileage isn't the greatest because of the awd( 2015 legacy sedan is avg 31.5) '07 forester avg around 24. I finally retired the Forster with 265k on it. It's still going strong but was time o move on. If it wasn't a long haul daily driver I'd have gotten the forester again and dealt with less mpg
-
My 2014 Subaru has 43,000 miles and has not had one issue. Only thing I've ever done to it is change the oil and the air filters. I've used it hunting but more for scouting and checking trail cameras during the summer. I really don't want to take it out in the mud although I'm sure it would do fine. Only had it in snow a few times and like greenhead_killer said you can't even get the tires to spin. I get around 34 mpg average, mostly that's freeway driving back and forth to work. When my wife drives it she only gets around 24 mpg. :o LOL
-
I've got a 2012 and they are great cars. I abuse mine all the time. Keep up with basic maintenance and make sure you hit the big service intervals to keep them running for 300k+.
They're not difficult to work on if you like to do the work yourself. Much better than my civic or maxima and miles ahead of my old ford truck. Lol
-
My wife drives a 2014 Forester.
Her favorite car ever.
-
My wife WAS a Subaru person. We had a 2009 Tribeca, it was a nice rigs, comfortable, quiet, handled bad weather well. The gas mileage was not great at 18mpg. She was driving 45 miles one way to work so we sold it and got a 2014 brand new Crosstrek. Road noise was awful, not comfortable to drive. It did handle snow and ice great with studs. At 28,000 miles while my wife was driving home on I5 it broke a valve spring, shot a rod through the side of the motor. When the tow guy got to her, he said that it was his 4th Subaru that month that he's seen with that problem. It was under warranty luckily so it got fixed. We sold it and bought a 2016 Highlander (which is what I tried talking her into before the Tribeca). It is a better vehicle than both our previous Subaru. Quiet, smooth, so comfortable, powerful, and best of all Toyota reliability.
-
I have had an outback for 3 years. Very good car. Great clearance, good on dirt roads, snow, ice, deep water etc. I have the 4 banger so I could get better mileage as I was using it as a commuter. It is not a powerhouse but I hear the 6 cylinders are better. I get 26-28 mpg on the highway, and I don't pay attention to how I drive. if I did I could probably get over 30.
The only odd thing is that there is a pause when you shift from park into gear of about 1.5 seconds. Takes some getting use to.
I have hunted several times out of it and it does well. I got a 6x6 300 class elk rack into the vehicle too! I take it skiing and it has never once felt bad on slush, snow or ice.
I need to upgrade my truck so I will likely be turning it in this year. If I could afford both I would keep it. My wife has a 2014 Forester and she loves it! We just swapped over from the lease to buy it.
Take them for a test drive, see how they feel. Make sure the pause from park to being in gear does not drive you nuts!
Oh... I hit my first deer ever while driving my outback last winter too! I outside Wenatchee and doing 40 when I hit it and while the deer did 5K in damage, no one was hurt, and I drove the on to our elk hunting place, did the hunt, shot my cow, packed it up in the car, drove home and then continued to drive it for a week or so while we got the insurance taken care of and an appt. made.
-
We will drive the wheels off our 2005 Forester. When we replace it for the wife, I'll use it. Been camping in it, but no hunting. Snow traction is awesome.
-
Guess those Subarus aren't just "tree huggers" cars huh?
FWIW I'm driving my first Subaru and can't believe I didn't discover them sooner. Bought a '16 Forester a year ago December. Pushing 45k. I spend a lot of time on the road and love everything about the car. Had it up and down the Manastash for many scouting and hunting trips. Handled great in 8" of snow covered 2-track during the late season and been over the pass numerous times in the sketchiest conditions.
Hauls a utility trailer filled with elk camp just fine too. Get about 30mpg.
-
I saw a Subaru Forester at a gas station in Chehalis once, while I was filling up mine, license plate was "4HUNTIN"
-
we have a 2015 cross trek that does awesome, great gas mileage, awesome on snow and ice..it does have the road noise, which isn't really a problem for us..The eastside is lousy with these cross treks, super good rig for us..no kids though
-
2011 Forester with 90k on it. Not one issue with ours.
Before I bought my truck, I had a 2002 wrx that I would take bird hunting and fishing.

My wife seeing this car last summer pert near cost me a pile of money lol, I really like these things though, wouldn't have been to upset if she decided on getting one

Wow. That thing will definitely go further than I'd ever take it

One more (interesting comparison of the various AWDs out there):
-
That matches my experience on my hill this last snow storm, although a Honda pilot did pretty well with momentum.
It was pretty comical to watch people with their "AWD" spinning, sliding sideways as they discover physics, and then turning around in defeat. The stopped start on a hill is actually a pretty realistic test.
-
Is that rain on the camera lens at the end of the test? I like how both times the Subaru is tested it looks dry and clear. Typical advertising...
The wife and I own a 3 year old outback and really like it.

That's hard pack snow, try that in wet snow. :chuckle:
-
I am not a zealot by any means, but what that shows to me is an improvement over their earlier iterations where if you are cross-wise supported on diagonally opposed tires, with the opposites slipping, you can still move forward if conditions are otherwise appropriate.
I encountered this situation in an unimproved camp site in the Forester.
It's the same argument for lockers. It's an improvement over earlier iterations or base features. It will never be a lifted jeep or small pickup with front and rear lockers.
-
We had an '07 outback. I liked it for a while, but it ended up costing us lot's of money. Oil consumption, head gaskets, AC went out, ($2000) etc, etc. A common problem is head gasket leaks which usually comes in around $3000 to fix. Some owners just consider this "maintenance". I don't and won't buy one again.
-
My Wife has a 15 forester she loves the vehicle She Commuted in the 8in of wet snow from Newcastle to Issaquah earlier this year normally she would force me to drive her This vehicle performed flawlessly and gave her the Confidence sha can drive in inclement weather :twocents:
-
And when my friends tell me it is a lesbian's car, I just point out that this is perfect as I also like women.
-
I've had 2 Subaru trade-in's in the shop recently for pre-sale inspections. Both had blown head gaskets. Both went to the auction. One was a 2011 with ~100k miles on it.
I like the idea of a Subaru, but I don't like the idea that it's almost normal for them to blow head gaskets.
:dunno:
-
well that is not cool!
-
Over 12 years and about 200k, including being paid for about 8 of those years, we did head gaskets at about 100k, A/C at about 150K, and a broke timing belt (my fault) at about 175k. All told about $8k in service excluding routine stuff (probably only about $5500 without broke timing belt). Not bad, IMO, and we are ahead considering no payments and reduced insurance, if you reduced coverage.
I'd do it again.
-
We owned 2 with very good results, last one 2011 blew a head gasket at about 110,00 miles. Dealer was very arrogant about it, kind of stating you gotta take the bad with the good and implied that was very common on them. Said it was not worth much as a trade in ($3,000) and gave us a take it or leave price on a new one. Went down the street to the Honda dealer who gave us a great trade in and very good deal on a CRV and we went that way. Never owned a Honda before, but so far we're happy with the car. Used to love the Subarus, but think they've gotten a little too cocky about their product.

"Subaru experience"...
Is this some sort of code for experimenting in college?
-
My experience with Subaru is that they're usually the slowest drivers on the road and love to park their cars in the left lane. Especially in bad weather.

That's funny...... Mostly because I think I've noticed the same thing.

I had a 98 legacy sedan with the 2.2L engine. Great car, got me everywhere I needed to go. Sold it because I needed a truck.
My wife has a 2010 Impreza we bought new. Also been a great car. High 20's for gas mileage. But the head gasket is starting weep a little oil, we're at 70K miles. Northwest Rally Sports does the work I don't want to. They'll be putting in the multi layer metal STI head gasket once the leak starts getting worse.
The other issue with the 2010 Subaru, the fricken gas cap lanyard breaks! Shameless self promotion - I make replacement gas cap lanyards that are much stronger than the OEM version. If you're interested, check them out here: http://makerneer.com/products/

I own a cross trek and have really like it. It is very functional and capable, just upgrade the stock tires if you want to go off road.
-

What's really funny is that I just got home and driving down I-5 tonight I was in the left lane in my Chevy Silverado and had THREE Subarus fly past me on the right. This was only in about a 10 mile stretch of I-5. So.... from that I wouldn't say they're the slowest drivers on the road!
-
If you have a slow oil weep, try replacing the valve cover gasket, grommets, and spark plug boot seals. Easy and less than about $40 for the set, IIRC.

That'll work well if the valve cover gaskets are seeping. Won't do squat if the head gaskets are leaking.
The head gaskets are known to leak coolant internally in the engine on them. Subaru at one point had a special policy warranty extension on them. I know this because I got my sister in law's done under warranty for her. I don't recall the specifics on them, but you guys with head gasket leaks should be looking into this.
-
They should have continued the Brat, I knew lots of hunters who owned those, including hound doggers and trappers.

What years have the head gasket issue?
I thought it was the 2.5l from 2011 and older?

Yeah. Should have been more specific. Those seals/boots are a common leak, as is the oil cooler. For sure, ID the source before throwing parts at it.
-

If that's the model with the truck bed on it they still do. My coworker just bought one. We have an '15 outback with the 2.5 in it and it has plenty of power and we average about 29-33mpg on highway. We also added a Yakima carrier for extra room. The road noise isn't too bad and it's comfortable. I drove it up in the gravel roads above salmon,id this summer and it did fine. During snow and ice you can't make that thing spin out. The x-mode is cool and works well plus the back seats fold flat for extra storage and they also recline back a little for those that want to sleep. It's been a great car. We've had a few recalls and the passengers window popped off the track but I've had worse vehicles that needed repair more often. Use the recommended 0w-20 oil and drive it!
-
They stopped making the Brat in 1994. They made a modEl they called the Baja that was similar from 2003 to 06, but I wasn't aware of a similar model in production now?

I would never buy a Subaru
a FRIEND PURCAHSED A 2015 FORESTER AND IT BURN A QUART OF OIL EVERY 2k.
Dealer giving the run around for 2 years and says that is normal for a car to burn that much oil. She found out about the class action suit and brought to dealer's attention and obviously dealer knew as another customer was in the dealership complaining of the same and she overheard dealer knew of lawsuit and kept hush. Subaru wont return calls etc. Three dealers wont make right and Filing under lemon law now.

knock on wood,I bought a 2015 crosstrek brand new,25 k for mileage right now haven't used any oil,we love this rig..I have heard all the horror stories and pray ours stays good, lots of folks are buying a these crosstreks here in farm country, the folks we know haven't had problems either..maybe Subaru
did something

My 2014 Subaru with over 40,000 miles has never needed a drop of oil added between oil changes, and oil change intervals are 7,500 miles. Just lucky I guess.

Chevy told me the same thing on my 2003 Avalanche. Burns 2 quarts every 3-4K miles. That was considered "normal".

Sorry to hear. We love our forester, our soon to be son-in-law has one and our neighbor has one they love. We'll probably all buy again, just today my wife and I were talking about it, she loves this car more than any other car she's ever had.
-
My 2014 cross trek has never leaked oil. Just under 40,000 miles on it and I've driven it hard. Never had any issues with it actually. I do all the recommended maintenance and change oil every 5k miles, but also have a 100,000 mile/8 year warranty on it. I have no regrets on my Subaru, probs will buy one again (unless it's still running good and want a new 2025 chevy truck.)
-
I change oil every 3,500 miles on our 2014 Forester.
It's never down enough to top off......
(I would be pissed if I bought a new car and it burnt oil like that.)
-
I'm driving my future father in laws Subaru in Texas right now. It's ok. I expected it to be roomier. Backseat wasn't very big when we got picked up at airport and the floor of the back hatch was filled with two average sized suitcases. It's a four banger five speed. Gets up to speed ok. Pretty low on power though. Drives ok I guess. Seems small inside for how big the car is outside.
-
Sorry for your loss
-
The other thing to note is the consistently high NHTSA ratings. As far as space goes, it does get a little cramped with two kids under 7, but with the fold down seats and a roof rack, you can really load it up. We'll be looking at 4Runner/Landcruiser/Pilot next.
I think at 170K-ish we are losing about a quart between oil changes.
-
Thanks for all the responses. I went this past weekend and drove a few, they seem nice. Still not sure exactly what I'm going to do - I have a few dealerships working on quotes for trucks but I'm not sure how its going to work.
My first season of hunting was done in a Honda Fit, and I took that thing into some surprising places. Only got stuck twice - first time was able to push out, second time ran off the road and high centered it. I decided after the second time that a more appropriate vehicle would be needed... before the next season I bought my truck.
To be honest I'm more of a walk-in guy. In the Tacoma, theres only been a time or two that I have been 'under-gunned' getting somewhere. Those times were both deep snow, and to be honest I'm not sure anything outside of a big wheeler would've made it through that stuff. The rest of the time I haven't even come close to pushing the limits.

Did the USMB help you narrow down what vintage Subarus to look for?

Here is a lifted subaru for ya. :)
I have a 2005 with 140K and no issue.

Update - I had a camping/hunting trip planned with the wife/kid to eastern WA to fill my other turkey tag. Decided to take my wifes car(a Equinox) to see how it would work with the cargo space... they have similar dimensions, the outback having 2-3 more cubic feet of storage. We ended up not having enough room to fit everything, and that was with us also packing the front seat and sitting my wife in the back next to the car seat, and packing the seat on the other side of the carseat and floorboards. While it would've worked fine if it were just me and my wife, my reason for buying to be able to fit the wife and kid(and eventually a second kid) in the vehicle comfortably with gear.
I ended up with a Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab with the long bed. Much more room for activities!
-
Just bought a 2000 Forrester 216k for my daughter. Nice enough car. Timing belt was done about 4 years and 30k ago so I think we are good. Whats up with stupid parking light switch on the column? Man I could not figure out why the lights were on for 2 days. :bash:
-
My 2009 Forester with 160K blew up on Friday. Dealer can't say why but this is definitely the last one I will own. Price to repair a little north of 8K from the dealer and 2 independent shops. I drove it hard but I drive all my cars that way and this is a first for me. Car had regular service and the head gasket repaired. Not sure what to do at this point. Hate spending 8K on a car only worth that but if I do I hope I can drive it another 100K before something else major fails. This was a non-turbo model.
-
I wouldn't do it. I had a similar situation with my '07 outback at 117K. I pulled the plug. Same thing happened to my daughter in law. Subarus often turn into money pits but their owners like them enough to consider it "maintenance". There were a lot of things I liked about it, but geez, no more Subarus for me. A lesson learned the hard way!
-
Don't remember the year but we just had to replace the radiator, split along the top, and timing belts are friggin' expensive. You don't have to worry about them with your truck.....
-
Look into the 50k used Japanese engines?? Might be a cheap solution? :twocents:

Hate spending 8K on a car only worth that but if I do I hope I can drive it another 100K before something else major fails. This was a non-turbo model.
Get a used engine from a wrecking yard and have a mechanic install.

Don't remember the year but we just had to replace the radiator, split along the top, and timing belts are friggin' expensive. You don't have to worry about them with your truck.....
I would be a bit concerned about possible other issues if I had a radiator split across the top. Could be just a radiator problem. Could be more.

I think a solder joint failed.

Our 2012 Forester XT (turbo) with 150K is still going strong. Been thru a couple of 'incidents' that required significant body work. Wife hit a deer, and rear ended while stopped at a light. Just towed a 2250# load back from MT a few days ago. 1st time with a trailer behind it. Only dropped mileage 4 mpg, and no trouble holding 65 over the passes.

:yike: :yike: I sure hope you added an extra digit in there. If a Forester can tow 22k, I need to bite the bullet and swap it for my truck that can only tow 12k :chuckle:
