Subaru experience?

We had an '07 outback. I liked it for a while, but it ended up costing us lot's of money. Oil consumption, head gaskets, AC went out, ($2000) etc, etc. A common problem is head gasket leaks which usually comes in around $3000 to fix. Some owners just consider this "maintenance". I don't and won't buy one again.

My Wife has a 15 forester   she loves the vehicle She Commuted in the 8in of wet snow from Newcastle to Issaquah earlier this year normally she would force me to drive  her This vehicle performed flawlessly and gave her the Confidence sha can drive in inclement weather

I've had 2 Subaru trade-in's in the shop recently for pre-sale inspections. Both had blown head gaskets. Both went to the auction. One was a 2011 with ~100k miles on it.
I like the idea of a Subaru, but I don't like the idea that it's almost normal for them to blow head gaskets.

Over 12 years and about 200k, including being paid for about 8 of those years, we did head gaskets at about 100k, A/C at about 150K, and a broke timing belt (my fault) at about 175k.  All told about $8k in service excluding routine stuff (probably only about $5500 without broke timing belt).  Not bad, IMO, and we are ahead considering no payments and reduced insurance, if you reduced coverage.

I'd do it again.

We owned 2 with very good results, last one 2011 blew a head gasket at about 110,00 miles.  Dealer was very arrogant about it, kind of stating you gotta take the bad with the good and implied that was very common on them.  Said it was not worth much as a trade in ($3,000) and gave us a take it or leave price on a new one.  Went down the street to the Honda dealer who gave us a great trade in and very good deal on a CRV and we went that way. Never owned a Honda before, but so far we're happy with the car.  Used to love the Subarus, but think they've gotten a little too cocky about their product.

Forgot to mention.....  when you your Subaru, get X-MODE:

It is truly incredible.

My wife's Forester has X-MODE........    Crazy good.

That's hard pack snow, try that in wet snow.

They are AWESOME in wet snow.

That's funny......   Mostly because I think I've noticed the same thing.

I had a 98 legacy sedan with the 2.2L engine. Great car, got me everywhere I needed to go. Sold it because I needed a truck.

My wife has a 2010 Impreza we bought new. Also been a great car. High 20's for gas mileage. But the head gasket is starting weep a little oil, we're at 70K miles. Northwest Rally Sports does the work I don't want to. They'll be putting in the multi layer metal STI head gasket once the leak starts getting worse.

I own a cross trek and have really like it. It is very functional and capable, just upgrade the stock tires if you want to go off road.

That's funny......   Mostly because I think I've noticed the same thing.

What's really funny is that I just got home and driving down I-5 tonight I was in the left lane in my Chevy Silverado and had THREE Subarus fly past me on the right.  This was only in about a 10 mile stretch of I-5. So.... from that I wouldn't say they're the slowest drivers on the road!

If you have a slow oil weep, try replacing the valve cover gasket, grommets, and spark plug boot seals.  Easy and less than about $40 for the set, IIRC.
