I would like to put in for a cow tag in this unit this year is there still public access and area to hunt.
-
Very limited, most is owned by the big W and they have a pay permit going. Good Luck!

:yeah:
Unless you plan on buying a timber permit or own property I'd look elsewhere.
-
Also the south end along the river saw some serious landowner poaching a few years ago so that herd is pretty small. You would be better to look elsewhere.

I'll offer this...
"IF" you draw the cow tag..... and I'm assuming rifle. PM me after and I would be glad to help.
Otherwise... I'm not spilling any more beans....good luck

GMU 506 Has a fair amount of land that is accessible for free. Hancock, TCI (Campbell group) and may others still allow free access but is generally behind locked gates allowing walk-in hunting only. There is also a fair amount of state property in the mix also. Do your research, know your boundaries. There are plenty of elk, however hoof rot is creeping into it on the east boundary.
-
Look at Ryderwood (530 I think) to the east. More public DNR land is available there and some longview Fiber which isn't permit only.
-
Longview Fibre doesn't own any land. Weyco bought it all up
-
OK
-
Don't take it the wrong way... just saying. I live in the south end of 530 An a few of the small pieces Fibre had next to the state land our now gated up an permit only.
-
Got it, thanks for the info.
-
Allot of Sierra Pacific ground in Ryderwood, it's walk in no permit

I was selected for a cow tag in 506 and now find myself looking for info as well.

Do you have a Weyerhaeuser Pe Ell South access permit? If not, access in that unit will be tough. I believe your only chance would be in the south side of the unit.

Pay Weyco if you want to hunt. Welcome to WDFW/WEYCO. Sorry, it sucks, limited places. Wish ya good luck.

Too late to pay Weyco.

Better luck heading into 672 on the DNR land.
-
There are non motorized access permits still available. Might be better than nothing. Only $50.
-
Lots of Sierra Pacific land on south side. Have to walk in or bicycle. If you get one their security guy will haul it out if you call them
-
I live very close to the Willapa hills and work there daily falling timber hoof rot is really bad I mean its so bad its wiping out the elk..
-
300...is hoof rot prevalent throughout the whole unit? I've been in the Coweeman where there are lots of animals with hoof rot, but last year when in Willapa I didn't see any animals with hoof rot (of course I didn't see a lot of animals to start with). I guess the question is what areas are working in?
Thanks,
LF

Some state land out of east valley. seirra land mainly in ryderwood, hancock/campbell in willipa on the south end. hancock is mainly all walk in but no permit needed. ive seen the hoof rot reach the ryderwood area but have yet to see in willipa where i hunt, took my cow late last year and whole heard she was with not a single limper. your best access will be to hunt in the southern side of unit like stated

Weyco security will do the same as long as he's free to come get it. He told me it may take him an hour or 2 to get there but would come haul it out

Hoof rot is in both I've seen it in the southern half of 506 and seen it outside of castle rock in ryderwood. Never been to the northern half of 506 or other end of the Ryder wood unit but o would expect similar amounts of hoof rot.
